Book The Selected Letters of W E Henley

Download or read book The Selected Letters of W E Henley written by Damian Atkinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text of the book consists of some 150 letters (out of a corpus of 2,500) written by the late nineteenth-century poet, critic, editor and journalist W.E. Henley, to various figures of the period, e.g. R.L. Stevenson, H. G. Wells, J.M. Barrie, William Archer, Rodin, Wilde, Kipling, Arthur Morrison, Alice Meynell, and Edmund Gosse. Letters are also included to other figures within Henley’s immediate circle, his wife Anna, his financial backer Fitzroy Bell, Charles Baxter the arbitrator in the quarrel between Henley and Stevenson, and his Edinburgh art collector friend Hamilton Bruce. Each letter is fully annotated. An introduction places Henley within the period and provides a biographical account of his life and literary work which is reflected in his letters. Of particular importance is the role of Henley as editor of London, the Magazine of Art, the Scots Observer and later the National Observer and the New Review.

Book Disturbed Ireland Being the Letters Written During the Winter of 1880 81

Download or read book Disturbed Ireland Being the Letters Written During the Winter of 1880 81 written by Bernard H. Becker and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this invaluable resource for both local and family historians, Becker, a renown nineteenth century journalist, journeys through Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick, Cork, and Kerry, during 1880, reporting the Land War. We hear of the places he visited and the people he met, including Captain Boycott. Members of the landed gentry and military are depicted as struggling to cope with the ostracism of the local populations of Westport, Castlebar, Ballinrobe, Connemara, Ennis, and Gortatlee, Tralee, Killarney and Valencia. The locals are depicted as lively, courteous and impenetrable as they close ranks against a system, which is driving them from the land. His analysis is often sympathetic to the hungry, unkempt native Irish, but ultimately he retires within the boycotted boundaries of the country houses of the besieged Irish gentry. Clachan editors have edited it carefully, updating certain disused symbols, spelling and punctuation. We have also provided an index and scholarly footnotes.
