Book excerpt: Excerpt from Looking Forward: The Phenomenal Progress of Electricity in 1912 When in the consideration of the welfare of all nations of the earth a book is written like Bellamy's "Looking Backward," the people of the world not only admire the author's prophecies, but they try to bring about those conditions which are of daily help in the pursuit of happiness and prosperity. The last generation has brought about many new conditions in our daily living. The dawn of another generation has introduced to the people conveniences never before enjoyed in any part of the world. It is, therefore, preeminently fitting that all the citizens of the earth should prepare for the year 1912. On the morning of Decoration Day in that year, those living shall witness the end of a quarter of a century, counting from the year of Bellamy's book in 1887. The purpose of the author in writing this book, Looking Forward, was to attract the attention of the people to the many evidences of ideal conditions which now exist, that were prophesied by Bellamy; also to present to the people the many evidences of other new conditions destined to greatly favor the domestic, social and industrial relations of the people in the pursuit of their daily vocations. It was the intention, likewise, to impress upon the readers not only the marvelous progress of electricity, but the very great share which the electrical industry and its representatives have taken in the endeavor to bring about improved conditions for the people in general. Book Futuristic Cars and Space Bicycles

Download or read book Futuristic Cars and Space Bicycles written by Jeremy Withers and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-04 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the extensive influence of the 'transport revolution' on the past two centuries (a time when trains, trams, omnibuses, bicycles, cars, airplanes, and so forth were invented), and given science fiction's overall obsession with machines and technologies of all kinds, it is surprising that scholars have not paid more attention to transportation in this increasingly popular genre. Futuristic Cars and Space Bicycles is the first book to examine the history of representations of road transport machines in nineteenth-, twentieth-, and twenty-first-century American science fiction. The focus of this study is on two machines of the road that have been locked in a constant, often bitter, struggle with one another: the automobile and the bicycle. With chapters ranging from the early science fiction of the pulp magazine era in the 1920s and 1930s, to the postcyberpunk of the 1990s and more recent media of the 2000s such as web television, zines, and comics, this book argues that science fiction by and large perceives the car as anything but a marvelous invention of modernity. Rather, the genre often scorns and ridicules the automobile and instead promotes more sustainable, more benign, more restrained technologies of movement such as the bicycle.

Book Science Fact and Science Fiction

Download or read book Science Fact and Science Fiction written by Brian Stableford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-06 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science fiction is a literary genre based on scientific speculation. Works of science fiction use the ideas and the vocabulary of all sciences to create valid narratives that explore the future effects of science on events and human beings. Science Fact and Science Fiction examines in one volume how science has propelled science-fiction and, to a lesser extent, how science fiction has influenced the sciences. Although coverage will discuss the science behind the fiction from the Classical Age to the present, focus is naturally on the 19th century to the present, when the Industrial Revolution and spectacular progress in science and technology triggered an influx of science-fiction works speculating on the future. As scientific developments alter expectations for the future, the literature absorbs, uses, and adapts such contextual visions. The goal of the Encyclopedia is not to present a catalog of sciences and their application in literary fiction, but rather to study the ongoing flow and counterflow of influences, including how fictional representations of science affect how we view its practice and disciplines. Although the main focus is on literature, other forms of science fiction, including film and video games, are explored and, because science is an international matter, works from non-English speaking countries are discussed as needed.

Book excerpt: If you take Boston's Blue Line to its northern end, you'll reach the Wonderland stop. Few realize that a twenty-three-acre amusement park once sat nearby—the largest in New England, and grander than any of the Coney Island parks that inspired it. Opened in Revere on Memorial Day in 1906 to great fanfare, Wonderland offered hundreds of thousands of visitors recreation by the sea, just a short distance from downtown Boston. The story of the park's creation and wild, but brief, success is full of larger-than-life characters who hoped to thrill attendees and rake in profits. Stephen R. Wilk describes the planning and history of the park, which featured early roller coasters, a scenic railway, a central lagoon in which a Shoot-the-Chutes boat plunged, an aerial swing, a funhouse, and more. Performances ran throughout the day, including a daring Fires and Flames show; a Wild West show; a children's theater; and numerous circus acts. While nothing remains of what was once called "Boston's Regal Home of Pleasure" and the park would close in 1910, this book resurrects Wonderland by transporting readers through its magical gates.
