Book Looking Down the Corridors

Download or read book Looking Down the Corridors written by Kevin Wright and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2015-05-04 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1945 and 1990 the Western Allies mounted some of the most audacious and successful intelligence collection operations of the Cold War. Conducted in great secrecy, aircrews flew specially modified transport and training aircraft along the Berlin Air Corridors and Control Zone to gather intelligence on Soviet and East German military targets in the German Democratic Republic and around Berlin. The Air Corridors comprised three regulated airways for civil and military air traffic that connected West Berlin to West Germany. Operating under the guise of innocent transport and training flights, the pilots used their right of access to gather huge amounts of imagery for forty-five years. They also provided the western intelligence community with unique knowledge of the organisation and equipment used by Warsaw Pact forces. For the first time, using recently declassified materials and extensive interviews with those involved, Looking Down the Corridors provides a detailed account and analysis of these operations and their unique contribution to the Cold War.

Book excerpt: The fourth instalment in the epic Magic Crystals series, following the events of 'Hunt and Power’. A great war has enveloped the world, sweeping all before it and sending John and his friends, now wanted criminals scurrying for cover. While those who can must take the frontline to protect as many innocent lives as possible, the Hammerson family and their army of loyal Hammerhearts swiftly take control of two thirds of the world, using magic to impact the minds of those previously in power to make them cave. John must struggle on two fronts as his social and romantic lives become ever more complicated, and he must be mindful of his safety every time he leaves the shelter of the Woodward Sorcerers' headquarters. Several of his friends would learn this lesson at enormous cost. The only chance our heroes have of survival is in the shape of a jittery old man, who may have all the answers; but in order to find out, the Chopville teens must undergo a journey of discovery and understanding first.

Book excerpt: We spend our lives moving through passages, hallways, corridors, and gangways, yet these channeling spaces do not feature in architectural histories, monographs, or guidebooks. They are overlooked, undervalued, and unregarded, seen as unlovely parts of a building’s infrastructure rather than architecture. This book is the first definitive history of the corridor, from its origins in country houses and utopian communities in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, through reformist Victorian prisons, hospitals, and asylums, to the “corridors of power,” bureaucratic labyrinths, and housing estates of the twentieth century. Taking in a wide range of sources, from architectural history to fiction, film, and TV, Corridors explores how the corridor went from a utopian ideal to a place of unease: the archetypal stuff of nightmares.

Book Material Cultures of Psychiatry

Download or read book Material Cultures of Psychiatry written by Monika Ankele and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2020-10-31 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past, our ideas of psychiatric hospitals and their history have been shaped by objects like straitjackets, cribs, and binding belts. These powerful objects were often used as a synonym for psychiatry and the way psychiatric patients were treated, yet very little is known about the agency of these objects and their appropriation by staff and patients. By focusing on material cultures, this book offers a new perspective on the history of psychiatry: it enables a narrative in which practicing psychiatry is part of a complex entanglement in which power is constantly negotiated. Scholars from different academic disciplines show how this material-based approach opens up new perspectives on the agency and imagination of men and women inside psychiatry.

Book How the Tin Man Found His Brain

Download or read book How the Tin Man Found His Brain written by Danute Debney Shaw and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""Will I ever be normal again?" That was the question. The First Light had occurred. It had happened... Some years ago, a gentleman was referred to me for consultation. It was unclear what kind of strategy this man was looking to develop, or why he was referred to me. He seemed vague and perhaps a bit confused. I should say, that some of the work I was engaged in at that time was "decision strategy innovation": an approach to professional and personal problem solving which incorporates multiple functions of conscious resources. Simply put, it involves the intuitive/inspired, rational and creative forms of thinking being utilized in concert, using subjectively and emotional intelligence." As Mr. Humphries points out via Alice Hoffman, "Once you know some things, you can't unknow them." In other words, learning creates inner change. Within these pages you will find what has been described as many "nuggets that require further digestion," as Ms. Debney Shaw takes you on a personal journey toward enhancing your decision strategies , using methods designed to bring out innovation.

Book The British Prime Minister

Download or read book The British Prime Minister written by Anthony King and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British prime minister is universally acknowledged to be the most powerful single individual in the British system of government, but very little is known about what goes on behind the closed door at #10 Downing Street. As Anthony King points out, there are few articles—let alone books—on the prime ministership available to students of British politics either in the UK or the US. As the preface to the American edition states, while the British prime minister and the American president "do resemble each other in some ways, it is important right at the start to recognize the profound differences between them."
