Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That the environment has been steadily deteriorating -- be it the air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil that supports us in myriad ways, or the diversity of plant and animal life that surrounds us -- is common knowledge. Looking back to think ahead -- the first report of TERI?s ambitious ?GREEN India 2047? project -- seeks to set forth the extent of degradation of India?s natural resources -- water, soils, forests, and biodiversity -- during the first 50 years of its independence and assesses the damage in economic terms. It also takes air pollution, water pollution, and solid wastes into the scheme of the study. A chapter on ?development and lifestyles? shows how economic progress has led to lifestyles that are increasingly consumption-oriented, with its inevitable impacts on the environment. The report quantifies degradation by assigning monetary values to its impacts, which makes it possible to weigh the losses against the possible gains from avoiding or abating the losses. It concludes by pointing towards the path to sustainable development, namely DISHA (?direction?, in Sanskrit): Directions, Interventions, and Strategies for Harnessing Action. The 350-page report -- supported by charts, maps, and diagrams, with a complete overview -- is a must-read for policy-makers, corporate executives, politicians, planners, media persons, the scientific community, and the concerned citizenry. [Also available is a 52-page summary of this landmark report.]

Book Looking Back to Change Track

Download or read book Looking Back to Change Track written by and published by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking back to change track provides an answer to the questions that have marked the country's efforts to manage air pollution, water stress, waste disposal, forest wealth, and it's rich storehouses of biodiversity. In 1997, when India celebrated the 50th anniversary of its Independence, TERI's assessment of trends in the state of the environment in these 50 years sounded an alarm over the rapid deterioration of the nation's natural resources. 1997 was also a year when the fruits of economic liberalization were beginning to be realized, but what seemed to have slipped past policy-makers and the public alike was the pressure increased economic growth was exerting on India's natural resources. TERI estimated that the economic costs of environmental degradation in India already exceeded 10% of the country's gross domestic product. Released as GREEN India 2047, TERI's findings made it amply clear that neglecting the state of India's environment in the quest for development was an unsustainable proposition. The title explains that while in some cases, irreparable loss to the environment has occurred, in others, there still remains time to halt, reverse, and minimize the damage. As we step further into the 21st century, new approaches and strategies are required to tackle the onslaught faced by our vulnerable environment. This publication articulates some of these, which include progressive policy-making, sustained public'private partnerships, increased support for research and development of sustainable technologies, and last but definitely not the least, greater mobilization by civil society to protect India's natural resources. The message inherent in this book is that the stakeholders of India's natural resources include no one else but us Indians, and we need to partner each other to bring about a change in the way our environment is managed. For inspiration, we need to go no further than the Father of the Nation himself, whose advice ?Be the change you want to see in the world ? is as relevant to our relationship with our environment as in any other context.

Book Looking Back to Change Track

Download or read book Looking Back to Change Track written by Divya Datta and Shilpa Nischal and published by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, when India celebrated 50 years of its Independence, TERI's study Growth with Resource Enhancement of Environment and Nature (GREEN) India 2047 assessed whether the country was moving on an environmentally sustainable path. The sequel to the study, Directions Innovations and Strategies for Harnessing Action (DISHA) for sustainable development, released in 2001, projected environmental and resource implications for the country by 2047 under two scenarios, that is, continuing in a business-as-usual mode and adopting a more sustainable development trajectory. The present study picks up the thread from 1997, examining environmental trends in the last decade, isolating underlying priority issues and identifying strategies that are needed to prevent or ameliorate environmental damage. The mandate of the present study, thus, is to go beyond reporting the state of India's environment. Through an evaluation of the major factors that are responsible for the present state and the characteristics of resulting impacts, the study provides an agenda for action.

Book FREEDOM FROM AN ILLUSION OF FREEDOM

Download or read book FREEDOM FROM AN ILLUSION OF FREEDOM written by Patrick Lemon and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-08-19 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First let me mention that the main characters in the book are the readers and the readers are the audience too. Find out how and what character describes you best throughout the novel. Fear is one of the main forces that create this illusion of freedom. "Just because you are scared does not mean you are entitled to back down," (Lemon). Believing the belief that you are free is the very belief that creates this illusion. Then this belief traps you within an illusion of freedom and is the very belief that prevents you from realizing you are not free by any means of what you thought freedom was and what freedom really is. You believing that belief is what prevent you from discovering, seeing, understanding and experiencing what true freedom is and means. You can get out of this illusion through an 8 phase process that is offered within this novel. My book is a manuscript that offers the following: internal psychology, optimistic/positive psychology, reflective psychology, self-improvement psychology, self-knowledge psychology, therapy, spirituality, sociology, philosophy, workology, streetology, survivology (higher survival awareness /teens and adults), better relationship awareness (work, couples, or in general) and is a parental guide. This is not a conspiracy theory novel nor is it fiction. It is real events and real experiences anyone can experience. This book is a self-improvement; self-developmental novel that shows people how to fi nd and bring out their deep rooted power, true freedom, and potential of which they never knew existed or never knew how to bring out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2012 Best Book in the Humanities presented by the Mexico Section of the Latin American Studies Association In the turbulent twentieth century, large numbers of Mexicans of all social classes faced crisis and catastrophe on a seemingly continuous basis. Revolution, earthquakes, industrial disasters, political and labor unrest, as well as indigenous insurgency placed extraordinary pressures on collective and individual identity. In contemporary literary studies, nonfiction literatures have received scant attention compared to the more supposedly "creative" practices of fictional narrative, poetry, and drama. In Documents in Crisis, Beth E. Jörgensen examines a selection of both canonical and lesser-known examples of narrative nonfiction that were written in response to these crises, including the autobiography, memoir, historical essay, testimony, chronicle, and ethnographic life narrative. She addresses the relative neglect of Mexican nonfiction in criticism and theory and demonstrates its continuing relevance for writers and readers who, in spite of the contemporary blurring of boundaries between fiction and nonfiction, remain fascinated by literatures of fact.
