Book excerpt: Excerpt from Looking Back: An Autobiography My spare time, only, is occupied in literary efforts. I never allow them to interfere with either my business or social life. In composing, in a mysterious way, I comprehend the companionship of my imaginary friends as vividly as I do the material associates of life. To me imagination is the counterpart or result of inspiration, while inspiration is light thrown upon the unrevealed. The image may be the result of known or unknown cause, but the mystery does not blot out the actual existence of the image. The material image we call sight, the retained memory, and the unknown revelation, but all are comprehensive images. I see a bird, its form created a picture on my eye, the image of which mysteriously remained after the object had disappeared. Now what or who cognizes the primitive object, the formed picture or the retained image? The materialist assumes he has solved the mystery when he says; The appearance of the object formed an impression on your brain; omitting the important part of who comprehends the impression. These material and spiritual views are not the two extremes, there is no midway, one is right and the other is wrong. Either man is a spiritual, responsible being or he is just temporary mud. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of My Life: An Autobiography In looking back on my past life, amidst my many regrets there is one which often comes over me - that I have kept no record of days gone by. Had I done so, although there might have been little to interest others, there would have been much that would have been both interesting and profitable to myself. And further, it might have served to recall to those near and dear to me the recollection of many events, on which they would gladly dwell. Book Looking Back

Download or read book Looking Back written by Joyce Maynard and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir of what it was like to be a teenager in a tumultuous era, from the New York Times–bestselling author of The Best of Us. Joyce Maynard was eighteen years old when her 1972 New York Times Magazine cover story catapulted her to national prominence. Published one year later, Looking Back is her remarkable follow-up—part memoir, part cultural history, and part social critique. She wrote about diving under her desk for air-raid practice during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Beatles’ first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, and catching the first glimpse (on the cover of Life magazine) of a human fetus in utero. Extraordinarily frank, sincere, and opinionated, Maynard seemed unafraid to take on any subject—including herself. But as she reveals in a poignant and candid new foreword, she carefully kept her inner life off the page. She didn’t write about her difficult relationship with her mother, or her father’s alcoholism, or the fact that her best friend at college had struggled with the knowledge that he was gay. And she did not mention the most important part of her life at the time she was writing this book: her relationship with reclusive author J. D. Salinger, who read and corrected every page, even as he condemned her for writing it. In this special anniversary edition, Maynard’s candid introductory reflections on the girl behind the girl who wrote Looking Back lend a new dimension to this iconic analysis of a generation. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Joyce Maynard including rare photos from the author’s personal collection.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Night of Affliction and Morning of Recovery: An Autobiography Though the night of my suffering and pain was long and cheerless, yet, as the darkest night has its morning, so my afflictions terminated in an entire restoration to health. The darkest 'cloud has a silver lining. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in every cloud. The bow of God's promise was seen on the dark clouds of the night of my affliction as a token of God's goodness to me. It was through my afflictions that the word of truth was made a blessing to my soul. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
