Book Looking at the World with Broken Glass in My Eye

Download or read book Looking at the World with Broken Glass in My Eye written by Mark Justice and published by . This book was released on 2011-05 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Looking at the World with Broken Glass in My Eye, Mark Justice has given us a genuine gift; by turns funny, horrifying, heartbreaking, and just plain weird, this is a real showcase collection, and a feast for readers. You never know from one tale to the next what he s going to hit you with, and it s that very unpredictability that makes this book so much more than the mere sum of its often-brilliant parts. Justice has a keen and unflinching eye for the telling details of human (and un-human) behavior, and a poet s economy with words. There is not a wasted syllable to be found between these covers, and at times I felt as if I were being given a writing lesson. I cannot imagine anyone reading powerhouse stories such as Black Wings and the hands-down masterpiece Father s Day without feeling envious that they didn t write them. I expected this collection to be good; I didn t expect it to knock my socks off and leave me so wrung out. This is what short fiction should be but too often isn t. If you don t get this collection, your life is going to be all the poorer for it and I ve never said that about a book before. Gary A. Braunbeck, winner of the Bram Stoker Award and International Horror Guild Award, and author of To Each Their Darkness and A Cracked and Broken Path

Book To Each Their Darkness

Download or read book To Each Their Darkness written by Gary A. Braunbeck and published by Apex Publications. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2010 Stoker Award Winner for Superior Achievement in Nonfiction Explore the world of writing horror from a Bram Stoker and International Horror Guild award-winning author's point of view. Gary Braunbeck uses film, fiction, and life experience to elucidate the finer points of storytelling, both in and out of genre. This part-autobiographical, always analytical book looks at how stories develop and what makes them work--or not work--when they're told. Be warned: reality is as brutal as fiction. Rob Zombie, police shootings, William Goldman, and human misery are all teachers to the horror neophyte, and Braunbeck uses their lessons to make To Each Their Darkness a whirlwind of horror and hope for the aspiring writer.

Book When I m Gone Look for Me in the East

Download or read book When I m Gone Look for Me in the East written by Quan Barry and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of We Ride Upon Sticks comes a luminous novel that moves across a windswept Mongolia, as estranged twin brothers make a journey of duty, conflict, and renewed understanding. "A dazzling achievement...The rhythms are more like prayer than prose, and the puzzlelike plot yields revelations." —The New York Times Tasked with finding the reincarnation of a great lama—a spiritual teacher who may have been born anywhere in the vast Mongolian landscape—the young monk Chuluun sets out with his identical twin, Mun, who has rejected the monastic life they once shared. Their relationship will be tested on this journey through their homeland as each possesses the ability to hear the other’s thoughts. Proving once again that she is a writer of immense range and imagination, Quan Barry carries us across a terrain as unforgiving as it is beautiful and culturally varied, from the western Altai mountains to the eerie starkness of the Gobi Desert to the ancient capital of Chinggis Khaan. As their country stretches before them, questions of faith—along with more earthly matters of love and brotherhood—haunt the twins. Are our lives our own, or do we belong to something larger? When I’m Gone, Look for Me in the East is a stunningly far-flung examination of our individual struggle to retain our convictions and discover meaning in a fast-changing world, as well as a meditation on accepting what simply is.
