Download or read book Wagon Chariot and Carriage written by Stuart Piggott and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 1992 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the technological and social history of early land transport -- horses, wagons, chariots and wheeled conveyances of all kinds -- including the history of vehicles and mounts as symbols of status and eminence, fit to be presented to potentates, or buried with them. The author assembles evidence from texts and archaeology in the form of a grand chronological narrative that touches on matters as diverse as the fodder of King Solomon's horses, the military significance of the cavalry stirrup and the role of women on horseback. It begins with the ox-wagon: humble enough to us but, over 4000 years ago, the very first luxury transport. During the second millennium BC it was supplanted -- in lands as far apart as Egypt, India and China -- by the horse-drawn chariot, not merely as an engine of war, but as a parade car for public display and hunting in royal parks. Yet the chariot itself was gradually displaced by the ridden horse, which became the cardinal attribute of monarchy and nobility. The image of the heroic ruler on horseback remained constant from Marcus Aurelius until the eve of the modern era, by which time the covered carriage and coach had long since assumed the mantle of prestige vehicles.

Download or read book Railway Carriages written by Tim Bryan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolving from the horse-drawn stage coaches that they soon eclipsed, railway carriages steadily grew in sophistication so that by the end of the nineteenth century the railway passenger travelled in comfortable rolling stock of a design familiar to many until the 1960s. While modern trains look different from those built more than a century ago, even today the facilities are not so dissimilar from those enjoyed by our Victorian ancestors. This book describes the development of the railway carriage from those early days to the present, highlighting some of the key developments in the history, design and construction of carriages. It also looks at the innovations that made life easier for the passenger, such as the introduction of heating, lavatories and restaurant and buffet facilities, as well as the differences in comfort between the various classes of traveller.

Download or read book The Viceroy s Artist written by Anindyo Roy and published by Hachette India. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Somewhere in the foothills of the Himalayas, a sixty-two-year-old English painter falls off his sketching stool. Overweight, asthmatic and prone to attacks of epilepsy, Edward Lear is nevertheless on a mission – to paint the mighty Kanchenjunga for his patron, the Viceroy of India. Lear is an oddity, an outsider, simultaneously fascinated and repelled by the world the British have built in India. Even as he battles the fatigue of travelling on pony carts, jampans and trains, Lear reflects on those who run the vast machinery of the Empire – administrators and missionaries, kitmutgars and kamsamahs. Duelling pompous British officers with his wry humour, Lear turns his ear to the polyphony of local languages to compose nonsense poetry with a uniquely Indian flavour. Woven into this vivid account are flashes from Lear's own life – deep-seated fears stemming from an unhappy childhood and the memory of unfulfilled adult relationships. Inspired by the journals of this celebrated artist and poet, Anindyo Roy brings to life Lear's little-known Indian sojourns. In lyrical prose, and occasional verse, The Viceroy's Artist paints a picture of an exceptional man who inspires by his unhindered imagination, curiosity and compassion for the world.

Book excerpt: In 1783 Mount Laki erupted, leaving Iceland in famine. The sirens surfaced to help man, forming a bond between them. Árelía and Prince Eiríkur joined together to keep peace among the two species, and peace was kept until greed and gluttony consumed Prince Eiríkur. Twenty-five years later, there hasn’t been a siren sighted in six years. Until Æsa is discovered by siren hunters and everyone is after her, some for show and some for feasting, while others may have intentions far more sinister. Nikolai has escaped a violent past. Jealousy, betrayal, hatred, and murder entrench his family, and he no longer wants any part of it. However, his brothers won’t let him go and seek him out. Nikolai knows they are coming for him and is ready to accept his fate. But he has one last thing to do before he does—and he must have Æsa to do it. Æsa does not trust man and never will; in fact, she despises them. But Nikolai is not a man. Tragic, powerful, and darkly beautiful, Æsa is the second book in the Blood Bound series.
