Book Look We Have Come Through

Download or read book Look We Have Come Through written by Lara Feigel and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Her intensity and intimacy are engaging' Blake Morrison, Guardian 'A lovely, urgent, serious book' Tessa Hadley 'Refreshing and unexpected' Daisy Hay, Financial Times Brilliantly interweaving literary criticism, biography and memoir, Look! We Have Come Through! is a captivating exhumation of an author and a compelling manifesto for exposing ourselves to difficult and dangerous views. Lara Feigel listens to birds outside her window – their circling, strident calls – and thinks of D. H. Lawrence. It is the spring of 2020 and, as the pandemic takes hold, she locks down in rural Oxfordshire with her partner, her two children, and that most explosive of writers. Proceeding month by month through the year, she sets out to start again with Lawrence: to find vital literary companionship; to use him as a guide to rural living and even, unexpectedly, to child-rearing; to find a way through his writing to excavate the modern world she feels he helped bring into being. Tracing the arc of Lawrence's life and delving deep into his writings, she confronts his anger, his passion, his tumultuous vitality. In the process, she faces some of today's most urgent dilemmas, from secular religion to the climate crisis, from sex and sexuality to feminism's ideas about motherhood. And, as she watches the seasons change alongside Lawrence, Feigel finds the rhythms of her own life shifting in unexpected ways.

Book The Phoenix Paradox

Download or read book The Phoenix Paradox written by Gail Porter Mandell and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces D. H. Lawrence's development as a poet from his earliest to his latest poems. Focusing on the revision of poems in the Collected Poems, 1928, Mandell uncovers the implicit autobiographical narrative that underlies the collection and that dictates its structure. Lawrence rearranged and rewrote the poems to conform to a chronologic, thematic, and mythic plan, a plan he hints at in the unpublished Foreword to Collected Poems. In its final form, the poetry tells the story of Lawrence's "demon," a figure of his essential self, by recounting the chronological development of the "new" from the "old" self. Comparing form and content of versions of representative poems from the collection, Mandell analyzes the evaluation not only of Lawrence's poetic style but also of his ideas concerning human and physical nature. She contends that Lawrence was a mature poet with a developed system of poetic and philosophical thought by 1917, when he published Look! We Have Come Through! At that time he rewrote extensively. Through comparison of selected poems, several of which appear in print for the first time, we can reproduce Lawrence's emendations and thus depict the creative mind at work.

Book excerpt: Written in 1915, 'New Poems' is a collection of DH Lawrence's early poetry. He uses his profound perspectives on the world around him to explore issues such as human relationships, sensuality, and sexuality, setting them against unique backdrops. DH Lawrence (1885-1930) was an English poet and novelist. Famed for his lyrical prose, he was uncompromising in his mission to uncover the consequences of modernity and industrialization, particularly on sexuality, instinct, and spontaneity. His works, although innovative, were not truly appreciated until after his death, the most notable of which 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' was adapted to screen in 1981.

Kantor critiques the treatment of queer figures and imagines a braver and bolder future that allows queer voices the agency over their own stories. Drawing upon elements of the Aristotelian dramatic structure and the Hero's Journey, Please Come Off-Book is both a love letter to and a scathing critique of American culture and the lenses we choose to see ourselves through.

Book excerpt: "Birds, Beasts and Flowers" is a collection of poetry by the English author D. H. Lawrence, first published in 1923. The poems in the collection include some of Lawrence's finest reflections on the "otherness" of the non-human world. The recollections on the topic were inspired by Lawrence's stay in San Gervasio near Florence in September 1920. The author managed to transfer the atmosphere of that place and time masterfully.

Book Crying in H Mart

Download or read book Crying in H Mart written by Michelle Zauner and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the indie rock sensation known as Japanese Breakfast, an unforgettable memoir about family, food, grief, love, and growing up Korean American—“in losing her mother and cooking to bring her back to life, Zauner became herself” (NPR). • CELEBRATING OVER ONE YEAR ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food. As she grew up, moving to the East Coast for college, finding work in the restaurant industry, and performing gigs with her fledgling band--and meeting the man who would become her husband--her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live. It was her mother's diagnosis of terminal cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her. Vivacious and plainspoken, lyrical and honest, Zauner's voice is as radiantly alive on the page as it is onstage. Rich with intimate anecdotes that will resonate widely, and complete with family photos, Crying in H Mart is a book to cherish, share, and reread.
