Book excerpt: A marriage is transformed by a new arrival “Look at Us is a scrupulous dissection of a contemporary marriage in mortal peril. It’s also a wild ride of a novel, gorgeously written, by turns comic, lyrical, elegiac, disturbing, and profound. I couldn’t put it down until the startling conclusion.” —Valerie Martin, author of Property and I Give It to You Martin, a market analyst, and Lily, a corporate attorney, have a life that many would envy—they share an expensive New York apartment with their twin toddlers, sample the delicacies of Manhattan’s finest restaurants, and take Caribbean vacations. But when the couple’s nanny announces her imminent departure, they panic: how will they ever find a replacement capable of managing their spirited boys? Enter Maeve, a young Irish émigré. Neither of them imagines how indispensable she will become, either to the household or to their marriage. As the family’s domestic bliss takes an unexpected turn, a different type of intimacy evolves, leading to an explosive finale. A captivating, trenchant portrait of class and sexual dynamics, Look at Us reveals just how fragile our social arrangements really are. T. L. Toma lives with his wife in Portland, Texas.

Book A Story of Us

  • Author : Lesley Newson
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2021-02-19
  • ISBN : 0190883227
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book A Story of Us written by Lesley Newson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-19 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's time for a story of human evolution that goes beyond describing "ape-men" and talks about what women and children were doing. In a few decades, a torrent of new evidence and ideas about human evolution has allowed scientists to piece together a more detailed understanding of what went on thousands and even millions of years ago. We now know much more about the problems our ancestors faced, the solutions they found, and the trade-offs they made. The drama of their experiences led to the humans we are today: an animal that relies on a complex culture. We are a species that can and does rapidly evolve cultural solutions as we face new problems, but the intricacies of our cultures mean that this often creates new challenges. Our species' unique capacity for culture began to evolve millions of years ago, but it only really took off in the last few hundred thousand years. This capacity allowed our ancestors to survive and raise their difficult children during times of extreme climate chaos. Understanding how this has evolved can help us understand the cultural change and diversity that we experience today. Lesley Newson and Peter Richerson, a husband-and-wife team based at the University of California, Davis, began their careers with training in biology. The two have spent years together and individually researching and collaborating with scholars from a wide range of disciplines to produce a deep history of humankind. In A Story of Us, they present this rich narrative and explain how the evolution of our genes relates to the evolution of our cultures. Newson and Richerson take readers through seven stages of human evolution, beginning seven million years ago with the apes that were the ancestors of humans and today's chimps and bonobos. The story ends in the present day and offers a glimpse into the future.

Book Silent Terrorism A Look at American Racism and Hypocrisy

Download or read book Silent Terrorism A Look at American Racism and Hypocrisy written by George Foster and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last six words in the Pledge of Allegiance, “With liberty and justice for all,” continue to ring hollow for many Americans and will continue to do so until it becomes clear to all Americans that it is as difficult for the African American community to see justice in the continued murders of unarmed black men at the hands of men and women in blue as it was for white America to see justice in the acquittal of O. J. Simpson in the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson twenty-plus years ago. Silent Terrorism, A Look at American Racism and Hypocrisy was written in hopes of opening dialogue and stimulating conversation about race in America. I have been blessed to travel to many countries outside the United States of America, giving me a very good understanding and appreciation of the benefits of being born a citizen of the greatest country in the world. As great as this nation is as a whole, as honorable as its ideals are, the founding fathers left huge holes in its foundation related to race and racism which continue to divide our nation today. The tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) used by racist men in our society today differ from those of their forefathers. Their TTPs continue to evolve, change and are embedded in every facet of our lives, our justice system and our government which, from its inception, has been a state sponsor of terrorism (racism) within its borders. One can argue that many of the atrocities committed by the founding fathers and other immigrants from Great Britain were necessary to establish and build this nation; that excuse cannot be used to explain the continued racism, voter disenfranchisement, repealing of the Voting Rights Act, many of today's laws, and a grand jury system that continues to allow for the murders of unarmed black Americans. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, said “most of the black scientists in this country do not come from the most advanced schools” and black students do better at “slower tracked schools.” Scalia continued to express his racist views from the bench when he said students of color are being “pushed into schools that are too advanced for them” due to race-conscious affirmative action policies.

Book Beyond the Talking Points Taking a Deeper Look At America s Issues

Download or read book Beyond the Talking Points Taking a Deeper Look At America s Issues written by Mark Goshdigian and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even before the election of Barack Obama, Americans were beginning to notice that the country had changed direction. Five years into his presidency, neither he nor the legislators in Congress are willing to do the work necessary to solve our problems. Critical thinking may not be sexy, but it's what will enable us to overcome our most formidable challenges. Author Mark Goshdigian, an everyday American concerned about the nation's future, bucks the trend in a series of essays that pose tough questions: Can the federal government and Federal Reserve continue to turbo-charge the economy by spending so much money? How has globalization affected the United States? What can we do to fight an entitlement culture? Can we still learn from our failures and dare to be great? Whether you're a government worker, politician, voter, or student, you owe it to yourself to examine the economy, the nation's social issues, and the political process so we can move beyond the talking points.

Book Tales From The Auburn 2004 Championship Season An Inside look at a Perfect Season

This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 999 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you argue with perfection? The voters in the coaches and media polls can deliberate who's No. 1, the computers can spit out endless data to add to the arguments and everyone involved can ponder the merits of a playoff system, but some things aren't up for debate, especially the final perfection of Auburn's 2004 season. With a 13-0 record, an SEC championship and a Sugar Bowl victory, the Tigers know, "We're national champions in our hearts, even if no one else thinks so," quarterback Jason Campbell said. "No one can take that away from us." Nothing and no one, not the polls nor the computers, can take away what Auburn accomplished in 2004. Tales from the Auburn 2004 Championship Season is an inside look at the extraordinary character and the unique characters behind Auburn's undefeated season. "There's no doubt in my mind we left a legacy," safety Junior Rosegreen said. "They will never forget us. That's what it's all about." Book Before Creation Planet Life After Life

Download or read book Before Creation Planet Life After Life written by Donzella Ervin and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book, “Before Creation, Planet Life, After Life,” is to cause readers, especially Christians, to search for a broader perspective of Scriptures referencing man’s existence before and after death. I hope this work will initiate more thought as to when, where, and how we fit into God’s mind and final plans for us. If we embark upon this search looking at Scripture through traditional lenses, we will miss seeing the things of God, by the faith of God. He is the one who invited us saying, “If any man lacks wisdom (knowledge on any subject), let him ask of God who gives to all men liberally (holds nothing back from us)!” Yet, there are many church leaders who warn their parishioners against asking God questions concerning those things which plague their souls, even though the book of Job is a good example that God is not intimidated by our questions. Considering Job’s experience and reverence for God, while searching for answers, I believe the result of our seeking and asking will bring us the comfort and steadfastness that we so desperately need in our times of sorrow and disconnectedness. It may give us that “blessed assurance” that we have been, are, and will be “forever with the Lord!” We’re not strangers to Him, because He said that He chose us in Him (knew us) “before the foundation of the world” was laid. (Ephesians 1:4)

Download or read book Heroes and Monsters written by Josh James Riebock and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every one of us is both a hero and a monster, and the world we inhabit is both beautiful and twisted. We are shaken by changes, losses, gains, insights, desires, mistakes, and transitions. And just when we've gotten settled back down, things get shaken up again. This is the life we've been given. So how do we make sense of life's unexpected nature, find a way to embrace the tension, and live with a sense of peace despite pain? In this stunningly honest, compelling, and ultimately hopeful book, Josh James Riebock explores issues of trust, obedience, intimacy, dreams, grief, purpose, and the unexpected stops along the journey that form us into the people we are. In a creative way, he shows readers that pain and beauty are so inextricably linked that to lose the former costs us the latter. Those grappling with life's inconsistencies and trials will especially find a welcome resonance between their lives and Heroes and Monsters. Riebock both validates their experiences and challenges them to live beyond them in this ever-changing life.
