Book excerpt: Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. Stickers adorn our first memories, dot our notebooks and our walls, are stuck annoyingly on fruit, and accompany us into adulthood to announce our beliefs from car bumpers. They hold surprising power in their ability to define and provoke, and hold a strange steadfast presence in our age of fading physical media. Henry Hoke employs a constellation of stickers to explore queer boyhood, parental disability, and ancestral violence. A memoir in 20 stickers, Sticker is set against the backdrop of the encroaching neo-fascist presence in Hoke's hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia, which results in the fatal terrorist attack of August 12th and its national aftermath. Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.

Book The Four Year Hitch

Download or read book The Four Year Hitch written by Roy Reichelt Jr. and published by Seashell Books. This book was released on 2013-09-29 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year is 1952, the Korean War is in full swing and the Military draft is taking its toll on America’s youth. If you were between eighteen and twenty-five years of age, you were subject to it. American’s didn’t like the war or the draft and violent protests are common throughout the country. Unfortunately, the targets of the protesters were the innocent victims of the draft — our men in uniform. There is some good news too. Because of wartime spending, the economy is on the rise and jobs are plentiful. The only drawback is to obtain one of these good jobs, your military obligation had to be fulfilled or you couldn’t even fill out an application. I graduated from high school in May and was attempting to get on with my life. At that point in time, I was an only child living at home — catered to and spoiled by doting parents. I was also a loner both in and out of school. I hadn’t participated in any high school activities including sports, and didn’t date or have much of a social life. To me, planning my future meant getting a decent job so I could buy a car. After a fruitless year of job searching, I decided to join the U.S. Air Force for a four year hitch. This isn’t a war story, but rather about some of the more humorous adventures, or should I say, misadventures I experienced while serving my four year hitch. It was during this period that I grew from a naïve boy to a responsible man and father.

The narrative unravels the nonchalance of a dictatorial regime to the suffering of its people and the eventual uprising against the long-standing oppressive leadership. The play highlights the theme of unity, the role of women, and people’s power as critical elements in fighting against oppressive systems. It draws parallels with the political landscape in Cameroon, offering a prophetic reflection on the enduring nature of such regimes and the need to flush them out in order for the people to be truly free.

Book excerpt: A kidnapping gone wrong. A chronically ill child. And a union nobody sees coming…except the barrel of a gun. Quin Hedger is a rare breed. He’s a doctor who grew up on a ranch, with four brothers, a pious mother and a father who left this earth not long ago. Quin is hard-working, has a heart of gold, and will do anything for any of his patients, namely one. Getting little Trinity a new kidney isn’t any easy task, but he’s been at it since she was a baby and he isn’t giving up, not even when her corrupt Uncle arranges an ill-fated kidnapping that has a sudden twist. Whitney has raised Trinity all but on her own. Trinity’s father left when he couldn’t handle dealing with a sick child, but thankfully her brother Peter is there to sweep up the bits and fill the gaps…until he’s more trouble than he’s worth. Trinity’s doctor, who insists on being called ‘Dr. Quin’ as a kind sentiment, has always put her daughter front and center, so it tugs at both their heartstrings when they have to watch her health start to deteriorate. When Trinity’s father surprises Quin and Whitney, they’re led down a path of hope, only to be let down once again, as Trinity lays in hospital, missing out on her young life. Although hopeful, Quin keeps hitting brick walls in his quest to find what the little girl needs, and in doing so, he also finds what he’s always needed, but he can’t have both until the one he loves can love again. It’s a slippery slope and a tricky one at best. And when Quin finally sees the fog clear, he finds himself looking down the barrel of a gun.
