You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.
Download or read book The Theological Dickens written by Brenda Ayres and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first collection to investigate Charles Dickens on his vast and various opinions about the uses and abuses of the tenets of Christian faith that imbue English Victorian culture. Although previous studies have looked at his well-known antipathies toward Dissenters, Evangelicals, Catholics, and Jews, they have also disagreed about Dickens’ thoughts on Unitarianism and speculated on doctrines of Protestantism that he endorsed or rejected. Besides addressing his depiction of these religious groups, the volume’s contributors locate gaps in scholarship and unresolved illations about poverty and charity, representations of children, graveyards, labor, scientific controversy, and other social issues through an investigation of Dickens’ theological concerns. In addition, given that Dickens’ texts continue to influence every generation around the globe, a timely inclusion in the collection is a consideration of the neo-Victorian multi-media representations of Dickens’ work and his ideas on theological questions pitched to a postmodern society.

Book excerpt: You've done what you can: you've seen your doctor, made an appointment with a therapist, picked up the prescription for the antidepressant and swallowed that first strange pill. But it can take four to eight weeks for the meds to start to work, and it might take two or more tries before you and your doctor find the ones that work best for you. When you're in the midst of terrible depression, those weeks can feel like an eternity. You just want to feel better now. This book is for those who are in the long night of waiting. It does not promise healing or deliverance; it is not a guide to praying away the depression. It is simply an attempt to sit next to you in the dark while you wait for the light to emerge. Drawing on the wisdom of spiritual figures from the past and present--including Henri Nouwen, Thomas Merton, Barbara Brown Taylor, Bunmi Laditan, and many others--The Long Night is a comforting and inspirational companion for anyone in the midst of depression. Writer, editor, and minister Jessica Kantrowitz has been where you are. As a mentor and friend, she will walk with you on this journey toward life and light.

Book excerpt: For many people, remaining optimistic and feeling positive about themselves and their lives is a constant battle—especially when circumstances are difficult and life is hard. For others, negativity is something that only sneaks up from time to time, yet still wreaks havoc in their hearts. Regardless of the root causes, once pessimistic thoughts permeate our minds, our feelings and emotions begin to control us instead of us controlling them. Eventually it doesn’t seem possible to stay positive, happy, and full of joy, and negative thought patterns shake our faith, causing us to sink emotionally, mentally, and spiritually over time. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Despite what storms roll in, hearts anchored in God don’t sink. When we change the way we think, we can change the way we feel and live, even if our circumstances remain the same. Intentionally embracing the opportunity to experience a transformed heart and a renewed mind opens the door for a changed life, because a positive mind will always lead to a more positive life. In Unsinkable Faith, author and Proverbs 31 Ministries speaker Tracie Miles offers hope for women who struggle with negativity. Download or read book The Voice Said Write written by Erith Catlin and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six thousand years ago, God pronounced a curse upon this earth because of Adam's disobedience in Eden. The message of this book is a clarion call to twenty-first-century man to obey God's four commands given in Eden whereby evil will be held in check. God got this author's attention to write this book by one word spoken in his ear. It was back in 2011, he heard one word""write. The author did not know what subject God wanted him to write about, but then the impression came to his mind to write about creation and the fall of man. God gave man four commands! Number 4 is not really a command. It is really following God's example of resting and worshiping. If man worshiped God and held His name in sanctity, that would virtually wipe out crime and divorce. True worshipers will honor those two words of commitment that they made at the wedding altar"""I do." See Genesis 1:31. Crime and divorce, gone. Number 3 command is reproducing and subduing the earth (Gen. 1:28). The number 2 command is not to eat what God forbid (Gen. 2:16""17 and 1:29""30). Daniel adhered to this (Dan. 1:8). Command number 1 (work) is in Genesis 2:15""16. Dress the garden and keep it. God gave Adam a world that was "very good" while the twenty-first-century man has a world that is very bad. God is saying to twenty-first-century man, "If you keep what you are doing, you will keep getting what you are getting. Obey my commands and eat the good of the land." The message of the book? Honor God's creation. Love Him with all your heart, soul, and body and your neighbor as yourself. When the twenty-first-century man lives this way, evil will be held in check, and world conditions will improve.
Download or read book Do Yourself a Favor Forgive written by Joyce Meyer and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2012-04-03 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on her signature message of using the mind to master difficult emotions, Joyce Meyer focuses on the most destructive, insidious one of all: anger. It is responsible for broken relationships, sleepless nights, high blood pressure and ulcers. It destroys friendships, marriages and families, not to mention peace of mind. Anger is especially hard to handle for many Christians who have learned from childhood that "good Christians don't get angry." Meyer argues that properly handled, anger is an alert system that something is wrong and needs to be resolved. In her latest book, she delves into the important process of forgiving, explaining its positive impact on the roots, the forms and the results of anger. Why forgive? Joyce explains that forgiving is the only thing that can free one from the terrible turmoil that anger causes to spill over into every part of life. Meyer understands that life will never be fair, but that is not a reason to let anger destroy our well-being and health. This is her guide to navigating that thorny territory and finding true peace.

Download or read book Long Suffering written by Karen Gonzalez Rice and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long Suffering productively links avant-garde performance practices with religious histories in the United States, setting contemporary performances of endurance art within a broader context of prophetic religious discourse in the United States. Its focus is on the work of Ron Athey, Linda Montano, and John Duncan, American artists whose performances involve extended periods of suffering. These unsettling performances can disturb, shock, or frighten audiences, leaving them unsure how to respond. The book examines how these artists work at the limits of the personal and the interpersonal, inflicting suffering on themselves and others, transforming audiences into witnesses, straining social relations, and challenging definitions of art and of ethics. By performing the death of self at the heart of trauma, strategies of endurance signal artists’ attempts to visualize, legitimize, and testify to the persistent experience of being wounded. The artworks discussed find their foundations in artists’ early experiences of religion and connections with the work of reformers from Angelina Grimké to Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., who also used suffering as a strategy to highlight social injustice and call for ethical, social, and political renewal.
