Book excerpt: The Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) is a research program that tracks young people as they move from school into further study, work and other destinations. It uses large, nationally representative samples of young people to collect information about education and training, work, and social development. It includes surveys conducted from the mid-1970s through to the mid-1990s: the Youth in Transition Survey (YITS); the Australian Longitudinal Survey (ALS); the Australian Youth Survey (AYS); and the current LSAY collection, which began in 1995. This User guide has been developed for users of the LSAY data. The guide endeavours to consolidate existing technical documentation and other relevant information into a single document, thereby improving data accessibility and promoting wider use of the LSAY data.

Book excerpt: The Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) program brings together two existing, long-established projects, ACER's Youth in Transition and DEETYA's Australian Youth Survey. The origins and extent of these two projects are described in the following pages. While contact with the AYS cohort is due to finish in 1997, it is hoped to continue to survey members of the Youth in Transtion 1975 birth cohort up to at least age 25. In addition, a new program of surveys of students progressing through school and into postschool education and the labour force was established in 1995. New cohorts of Year 9 students will be introduced into the program at three yearly intervals, and surveyed annually for a period up to about age 25. Sampling details for the 1995 cohort can be found in technical paper number 8, while the codebook for that year's data is found in technical paper number 9.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The review of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) commenced in June 2013, The intention was that the review should make no assumptions about value for money, continuation or structure. A review of this kind has not been undertaken since the commencement of LSAY in 1995, although evaluations of its effectiveness and efficiency were completed in 2000 and 2010. The aim of this report is to provide systematic evidence to underpin decision making on the future of LSAY by : Making an objective assessment of the value for money and limitations of LSAY as presently constituted to policy makers, researchers and the wider community, Identifying the feasibility, implications and cost of enhancements or changes, including improvements to make LSAY a better and more agile policy tool; and Identifying options, timelines and, where possible, costs for continuance or discontinuance. The different methodologies used in the review were : Reviewing existing documentation, survey users, interview stakeholders, literature review, analysis of data and statistics, different case studies, review of LSAY in Australia and overseas in relation to youth and a technical and cost analysis for different options to enhance LSAY. Book Education and Occupational Attainment of Australian Youth

Download or read book Education and Occupational Attainment of Australian Youth written by Molla Huq and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, the effects of education and personal characteristics on the probability of occupational success were examined using Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) 95 cohort data which involved the students who were at year 9 in 1995 and were re-interviewed annually. The education-occupation dynamics may provide us with the means to produce industry based education to meet future occupational needs. We utilized multinomial logit model and ordered probit model with sample selection. Results suggest that higher educational level leads to better occupations. Also there is evidence that early life educational attainment directly relates to occupational success. Family background and in-school working experience proved to be important factors for occupational attainment. These results may help at directly pointing some important policy implications to ensure the fulfillment of certain educational skills in Australia.

Book From Education to Employment

Download or read book From Education to Employment written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the time it takes young Australians to obtain their first job after they complete their education. This is an important issue because the first experiences of young people entering the labour market may affect their future labour market successes or failures. The unique information contained in the employment calendar of the 1995 cohort of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) is used to estimate the factors associated with the length of time between completing education and commencing work. The report employed multivariate regression analysis to estimate the duration between completing education and obtaining work using the method of piecewise constant hazards. This method is known to be particularly powerful and robust for handling data that may be problematic in ways that are not clearly known, or which cannot be explicitly modelled even when known. These regression methods are called flexible or semi-parametric. - p.7.
