Book LONGITUDINAL STABILITY EQUATIONS FOR HYDROFOIL CRAFT WITH CONSTANT LIFT CONTROL SYSTEM

Download or read book LONGITUDINAL STABILITY EQUATIONS FOR HYDROFOIL CRAFT WITH CONSTANT LIFT CONTROL SYSTEM written by and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longitudinal equations of motion are developed for a tandem foil hydrofoil craft with a constant lift control on the forward hydrofoil. The roots of the characteristic stability equation are interpreted in terms of the physical motions expected for the craft. Several of the component stability modes involved are independent of one another, thus permitting simplified solutions to the general case of 4 degrees of freedom without loss of accuracy. Control inertia and mass unbalance are shown to have a negligible effect upon the hydrofoil craft motions. The short period craft oscillation can be isolated in study by assuming constant forward velocity of the craft. Numerical correlation was based upon the Lantern configuration developed by the Hydrofoil Corp.

Book General Longitudinal Stability Equations for Hydrofoil Systems with Specific Application to the Cape Cod Boat

Download or read book General Longitudinal Stability Equations for Hydrofoil Systems with Specific Application to the Cape Cod Boat written by C. H. Kahr and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A longitudinal stability analysis of hydrofoil systems has been made. The equations of motion include the terms corresponding to an automatic control with finite time lag. The methods used for solution of such equations have been discussed for the case when the critical time lag of an automatic control - hydrofoil craft combination is desired. The resulting equations have been applied to the Cape Cod Boat, a 14 ft tandem foil test craft, which used an automatic control sensitive to displacements from a preset depth. The critical time lag was obtained for this craft based upon an assumed two degrees of freedom and flight at an intermediate depth of approximately two and one half chords below the surface. Both the frequency response method and the transcendental characteristic stability equation solution were employed to determine the aforementioned critical time lag. Further examination was made of the Cape Cod craft's stability characteristics when control gearings are varied and zero time lag in control is assumed. (Author).

Book Lateral Stability and Motions of Hydrofoil Craft in Smooth Water

Download or read book Lateral Stability and Motions of Hydrofoil Craft in Smooth Water written by HARRY S. BLUSTON and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting from the linearized equations for small disturbances, the lateral motion of a submerged hydrofoil system is described by a set of transfer functions whose poles determine the system stability. Approximations to the poles are obtained in terms of the system hydrodynamic derivatives. By means of a digital computer the effect of parameter variations on the poles are studie for 50 ton and 110 ton craft, thereby illustrating the effect of these changes on the craft stability. The transfer function zeros are obtained in terms of the control and hydrodynamic derivatives to complete the system analysis. Using the poles and zeros previously obtained, means for automatic stabilization of the system are discussed and gain requirements are related to configurational changes. (Author).

Book Longitudinal Motions and Stability of Two Hydrofoil Systems Free to Heave and Pitch in Regular Waves

Download or read book Longitudinal Motions and Stability of Two Hydrofoil Systems Free to Heave and Pitch in Regular Waves written by J. M. Wetzel and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental measurements were made of the motions of two hydrofoil configurations free to heave and pitch in regular waves. The two configurations consisted of a dihedral (V) foil forward, flat foil aft, and dihedral (V) foils both fore and aft, and a flat foil near the center of gravity. The motions were measured in both head and following seas for a variety of wave characteristics and two towing velocities. The experimental results were compared with quasi-steady linear and nonlinear theory, and also unsteady linear theory. In general, agreement with the quasi-steady linear theory was satisfactory, although some improvement in the correlation was obtained by considering the effects of unsteadiness. Nonlinearities had little effect on the amplitudes of the osillatory utions of the nonlinear equations. Experimental investigation of the inherent stability of both configurations in smooth water indicated that the damping was greater than predicted by the quasi-steady linear theory. (Author).

Book Equations of Motion for Hydrofoil Craft

Download or read book Equations of Motion for Hydrofoil Craft written by M. Martin and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hydrofoil boat in a seaway is a very complicated system. In its simplest form it may be treated as a rigid body. However, this representation is not always correct. In some cases it may be necessary to take into account other factors such as the gyroscopic effects of propellers, the dynamics of the control systems and the elastic behavior of the boat. In this report the general equations of motion of the hydrofoil boat, treated as a rigid body, are first derivedAND DISCUSSED. The gyroscopic effects of the propellers, the dynamics of the control systems and the effects of the elasticity of the boat are then considered and related to the equations of motion of the boat.
