Book An Investigation by Analog Computer of the Effects of Vertical Gusts on the Longitudinal Dynamics of Two Aircraft in a Carrier Landing Approach

Download or read book An Investigation by Analog Computer of the Effects of Vertical Gusts on the Longitudinal Dynamics of Two Aircraft in a Carrier Landing Approach written by Richard O. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analog computer investigation was conducted to determine the effect of vertical gusts on the longitudinal motion of two aircraft in a carrier landing approach. The aircraft investigated were the F-8A and F3D. Dynamic response to step disturbances of the elevator determined the general stability of the F-8A and short and long periods of aircraft oscillations. The effect of sinusoidal vertical gusts of various frequencies on the longitudinal motion of the F-8A was also investigated. Results of the investigation showed that sinusoidal gusts of period one second or shorter had a negligible effect on the motion of the F-8A, whereas sinusoidal gusts of longer period adversely affect the airplane's motion. Using a linearized input of carrier air wake for the F3D program, it was found that the effects of dynamic-pressure drop in the wake were additive and that these effects caused the aircraft flight path (with the stick fixed) to fall below the ideal flight path. Book Aircraft Dynamic Stability and Response

Download or read book Aircraft Dynamic Stability and Response written by A. W. Babister and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft Dynamic Stability and Response deals with the fundamentals of dynamic stability in aircraft. Topics covered include flight dynamics, equations of motion, and lateral and longitudinal aerodynamic derivatives. Basic lateral and longitudinal motions are also considered. A non-dimensional system of notation is used, and problems are included at the end of chapters. This book is comprised of 13 chapters and begins with an introduction to aircraft static stability and maneuverability, with emphasis on the theoretical basis of flight dynamics and the technical terms used. The physical background for the estimation of aerodynamic derivatives is discussed. Subsequent chapters focus on the longitudinal and lateral motion of aircraft, including the effect of automatic control; modern developments such as the effects of aeroelasticity, dynamic coupling, and high incidence; and aircraft response to gusts. The final chapter demonstrates how to estimate the aerodynamic derivatives, and hence the dynamic stability characteristics, of a typical fighter aircraft. Throughout the text, the aircraft and its behavior are kept well to the fore. This monograph is intended for undergraduate students of aeronautical engineering and for newcomers to the aircraft industry.

Book Effects of Gust Velocity Spatial Distributions on Lateral directional Response of a VTOL Aircraft

Download or read book Effects of Gust Velocity Spatial Distributions on Lateral directional Response of a VTOL Aircraft written by Robert L. Swaim and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of spanwise distribution of longitudinal and vertical components of gust velocity and longitudinal distribution of the lateral component on the lateral-directional response of a hovering VTOL aircraft are analyzed. Results show that spanwise effects of the longitudinal and vertical components are negligible, and the longitudinal distribution of the lateral component is significant in computing the power spectral densities of gust-induced side force, yawing moment, rolling moment, and the aircraft sideslip, yaw, and roll root-mean-square response angles. If the gust-induced angles of attack and sideslip angles are in the nonlinear range of lift curve slope, the above conclusions, which are based on linear aerodynamic theory, may not hold and an analysis based on momentum transfer of gust energy to the aircraft is recommended. Flow field interaction effects due to engine intake and exhaust also were not considered. (Author).

Book Performance and Stability of Aircraft

Download or read book Performance and Stability of Aircraft written by J. Russell and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 1996-08-02 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance, stability, control and response of aircraft are key areas of aeronautical engineering. This book provides a comprehensive overview to the underlying theory and application of what are often perceived to be difficult topics. Initially it introduces the reader to the fundamental concepts underlying performance and stability, including lift characteristics and estimation of drag, before moving on to a more detailed analysis of performance in both level and climbing flight. Pitching motion is then described followed by a detailed discussion of all aspects of both lateral and longitudinal stability and response. It finishes with an examination of inertial cross-coupling and automatic control and stabilization. The student is helped to think in three dimensions throughout the book by the use of illustrative examples. The progression from one degree of freedom to six degrees of freedom is gradually introduced. The result is an approach dealing specifically with all aspects of performance, stability and control that fills a gap in the current literature. It will be essential reading for all those embarking on degree level courses in aeronautical engineering and will be of interest to all with an interest in stability and dynamics, including those in commercial flying schools who require an insight into the performance of their aircraft. - Ideal for undergraduate aeronautical engineers - Three-dimensional thinking introduced through worked examples and simple situations

Book On the Response of Airplanes in a Three Dimensional Gust Field

Download or read book On the Response of Airplanes in a Three Dimensional Gust Field written by John C. Houbolt and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The response of an airplane in a 3-dimensional gust field is examined with the intent of reducing the problem to the simplest terms. It is shown that response evaluation may be reduced to separate treatment of the longitudinal and lateral response cases. The longitudinal case reduces to considering the vertical gust velocities only, and generally the degrees of freedom of vertical motion, pitch, and vertical bending modes; vertical motion is the prime degree of freedom. The lateral case reduces to side gust velocities only, with degrees of freedom of side motion, yaw, and side bending; yaw is the prime degree-of-freedom in this case. The longitudinal gusts are found to be unimportant. The analysis show that the results from the separate longitudinal and lateral response evaluations must be combined to obtain the fuselage loads and loads on T-type tails. (Author).
