Book Longitudinal Dispersion in Non uniform Flow

Download or read book Longitudinal Dispersion in Non uniform Flow written by H. H. Carter and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-uniform flow is a flow in which the velocity at any given time changes from point to point along a streamline. In estuaries, such flows result from the cross-sectional area increasing in the downstream direction. A solution to the convective-diffusion equation for this type of estuary is obtained in terms of the estuarine geometry and the longitudinal diffusion coefficient. The model is applied to the results of two dye tracer experiments carried out in the upper Patuxent River during August 1969 from which the longitudinal dispersion coefficients were quantitated. The concept of a flushing velocity for an estuary is developed and defined. (Author).

Book Longitudinal Dispersion Coefficient Estimation in Two Dimensional Open Channel Flow

Download or read book Longitudinal Dispersion Coefficient Estimation in Two Dimensional Open Channel Flow written by Quanquan Liang and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longitudinal dispersivities are evaluated for two-dimensional open channel flow using a new velocity profile developed by Gomez (2006) as an alternative to the traditional "law of the wall" logarithmic profile commonly used. The modified profile improves on the logarithmic profile by incorporating a zero velocity gradient at the surface as well as a non-zero bottom slope, which is necessary for steady uniform flow. Non-dimensional forms of dispersivities are calculated based on Taylor's (1954) dispersivity equation using numerical integration with a polynomial approximation to enable integration of the indefinite integrals in that expression. While the velocities predicted by the traditional and modified profiles are relatively similar, significantly larger eddy viscosities are predicted with the new profile, and these are associated with slightly smaller longitudinal dispersivities. Flume experiments are performed to provide detailed velocity profile measurements, Reynolds stresses, and turbulent kinetic energy distributions. These data are used to compare the two profiles and to evaluate bottom shear stress and shear velocity for a range of conditions, and to provide a database for further research applications. The present results are meant to provide a stronger theoretical basis on which additional factors can be built for making final determinations of longitudinal dispersivity in the field. Further experiments are needed to directly measure longitudinal dispersivity and to confirm the present calculations.

Book Analysis and Modelling of Non Steady Flow in Pipe and Channel Networks

Download or read book Analysis and Modelling of Non Steady Flow in Pipe and Channel Networks written by Vinko Jovic and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis and Modelling of Non-Steady Flow in Pipe and Channel Networks deals with flows in pipes and channel networks from the standpoints of hydraulics and modelling techniques and methods. These engineering problems occur in the course of the design and construction of hydroenergy plants, water-supply and other systems. In this book, the author presents his experience in solving these problems from the early 1970s to the present day. During this period new methods of solving hydraulic problems have evolved, due to the development of computers and numerical methods. This book is accompanied by a website which hosts the author's software package, Simpip (an abbreviation of simulation of pipe flow) for solving non-steady pipe flow using the finite element method. The program also covers flows in channels. The book presents the numerical core of the SimpipCore program (written in Fortran). Key features: Presents the theory and practice of modelling different flows in hydraulic networks Takes a systematic approach and addresses the topic from the fundamentals Presents numerical solutions based on finite element analysis Accompanied by a website hosting supporting material including the SimpipCore project as a standalone program Analysis and Modelling of Non-Steady Flow in Pipe and Channel Networks is an ideal reference book for engineers, practitioners and graduate students across engineering disciplines.

Book Prediction of Traveltime and Longitudinal Dispersion in Rivers and Streams

Download or read book Prediction of Traveltime and Longitudinal Dispersion in Rivers and Streams written by Harvey E. Jobson and published by . This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possibility of a contaminant being accidentally or intentionally spilled upstream from a water supply is a constant concern to those diverting and using water from streams and rivers. A method of rapidly estimating traveltime or dispersion is needed for pollution control or warning systems on streams where data are limited. Discusses the theory of movement and dispersion of dissolved pollutants. Contains a summary of the methods used to collect time-of-travel info. Methods are recommended for estimating the rate of movement and attenuation of conservative pollutants based on an analysis of the data. The application of these results is illustrated by the use of 3 examples.
