Book Longhaired Lads of London

Download or read book Longhaired Lads of London written by and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-19 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was the innocent country girl who became part of the in-crowd in swinging London in the sixties. At only seventeen I moved to London to become an au-pair girl. Prior to this bold move I had lived my life in a small town in Western Norway, and never been out of the country before. In London, just after my eighteenth birthday, I was befriended by The Pretty Things, and became an on and off girlfriend of Phil May. The band introduced me to their friends, The Rolling Stones and I was a frequent backstage visitor at their local concerts. I lived a life that was the envy of many., dating big stars like Jeff Beck and going to all the fancy places in London, and later in Los Angeles. I emigrated to the USA in late sixties, and I still live in California. In the early seventies however, I was once more living in London and mingling with the beautiful people. Dating Keith Moon was an experience, but he was hard to resist. It was the best of times and it was the worst of times, as Dickens once wrote. Reading my book you will know what I mean.

Book excerpt: Some snippets of feedback from readers communicated on Facebook from UK and USA: David Faill in UK, "I still think your book, Inger, gives a much better, and more enjoyable, flavour of London at the height of the sixties";Sioux Abernethy Lucas in USA, "I guess I don't want it to end!! 😁 I am finishing up the "Down The Speak" chapter. It's still the most fascinating read I've just about ever encountered! I almost feel like I am living those years with you, Inger, and I am most reluctant to finish it! What a wonderful, engrossing book! I shall get to the last chapter tomorrow night, and I'm sure I'll be wishing for, and dreaming of, a sequel!!"; Bob Smarse jr.in UK, "Philip Arthur Dennis Wadely! Does he still hold the key to your heart? I just finished the chapter 'Landing In Hollywood'! I am really beginning to read between the lines. What a life you have lived. Thank You So Much for all of your work putting your Excellent book together. I need to re-read certain chapters over again. Your encounter dancing with Kim Fowley was rather humorous. Jeff Beck! Glyn Johns! I do feel at many times you were in over your head, so to speak. But, you still forged ahead. A pretty blonde girl! Who would ever imagine the roller-coaster ride that phase would bring into your heart? I will continue to read but I can only imagine what it must have been like to mix it up with so many famous people, as well as times. There Shall Never be any other time like the period between 1963-1973. It's all there in your book! Dancing with Brian Jones! My Goodness!"It was the decade of long lasting changes and great creativity; it was the decade of miniskirts, bell bottoms, the British Invasion, flower power, sit-ins, be-ins, blowing minds and some of the best music ever played. And I was there!! This is my story about traveling through it all: From a small village deep in a Norwegian fjord to mingle with the in-crowd in London, after having been "rescued" by the R&B band, The Pretty Things; going to a Roman Polanski wrap party; back stage and to recording studios with The Rolling Stones, meeting The Beatles, love affairs and relationships with troubled gifted musicians like Phil May, Jeff Beck, Bob Weston and Keith Moon. And everlasting love and friendship with New York based musician Sal Maida. Living and working in New York, San Francisco, New-Mexico and Los Angeles, most of the time as a single mom. Poor, but still hanging with the rich and famous, spending an Easter Weekend at an old castle in Ireland as guest of folk singer Donovan and wife. The guest list also included George Harrison and Pattie Boyd. Independent, curious, and rebellious describe the author best. Or as long time friend Robert Altman, photographer of stars, put it: "Pleasing to the eye". The book contains some wonderful photos, and several of the celebrity photos are rare and to the author's knowledge, never before published." You did a bang up job and it was worth the while. I loved reading the life and times of Inger Simonsen." - Robert Altman

Download or read book Making the Scene written by Stuart Robert Henderson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making the Scene is a history of 1960s Yorkville, Toronto's countercultural mecca. It narrates the hip Village's development from its early coffee house days, when folksingers such as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell flocked to the scene, to its tumultuous, drug-fuelled final months. A flashpoint for hip youth, politicians, parents, and journalists alike, Yorkville was also a battleground over identity, territory, and power. Stuart Henderson explores how this neighbourhood came to be regarded as an alternative space both as a geographic area and as a symbol of hip Toronto in the cultural imagination. Through recently unearthed documents and underground press coverage, Henderson pays special attention to voices that typically aren't heard in the story of Yorkville - including those of women, working class youth, business owners, and municipal authorities. Through a local history, Making the Scene offers new, exciting ways to think about the phenomenon of counterculture and urban manifestations of a hip identity as they have emerged in cities across North America and beyond.

Book Family Business

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A touching look into the heart and family of one of America's greatest poets. As a literary portrait of a father and son, little can match the eloquence and honesty of this collection of letters, written between Allen Ginsberg and his father, Louis, spanning the years 1944 to 1976. Their correspondence is filled with affection, respect, and a healthy dose of argumentative zeal-they debate every major political and artistic issue that faced America in over three decades of extraordinary change. But the letters also tell of a strong bond of intimacy and affection between the two, revealing just how crucial that closeness was to the development of Allen Ginsberg's art.

Book That s That

Download or read book That s That written by Colin Broderick and published by Crown. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brutally honest and deeply affecting memoir about growing up in the countryside in rebel country in Northern Ireland. Colin Broderick was born in 1968 and spent his childhood in Tyrone county, in Northern Ireland. It was the beginning of the period of heightened tension and violence known as the Troubles, and Colin's Catholic family lived in the heart of rebel country. The community was filled with Provisional IRA members whose lives depended on the silence and complicity of their neighbors. At times, that made for a confusing childhood. We watch as he and his brothers play ball with the neighbor children over a fence for years, but are never allowed to play together because it is forbidden. We see him struggle to understand why young men from his community often just disappear. And we feel his confusion when he is held at gunpoint at various military checkpoints in the North. But even when Colin does ask his parents about these events, he never receives a clear explanation. Desperate to protect her children, Colin's mother tries to prevent exposure to or knowledge of the harm that surrounds them. Spoken with stern finality, "That's that" became the refrain of Colin's childhood. The first book to paint a detailed depiction of Northern Ireland's Troubles is presented against a personal backdrop and is told in the wry, memorable voice of a man who's finally come to terms with his past.

Robert Elms has seen his beloved city change beyond all imagining. London in his lifetime has morphed from a piratical, bomb-scarred playground, to a swish cosmopolitan metropolis. Motorways driven through lost communities, accents changing, skyscrapers appearing. Yet still it remains to him the greatest place on earth. Elms takes us back through time and place to myriad Londons. He is our guide through a place that has seen scientific experiments conducted in subterranean lairs and a small community declare itself an independent nation; a place his great-great-grandfather made the Elms' home over a century ago and a city that has borne witness to world-changing events.

Book excerpt: National Society of Film Critics dares to go where few mainstream critics have gone before-to the heart of what gets the colored lights going, as they say in A Streetcar Named Desire. Here is their take on the films that quicken their (and our) pulses-an enterprise both risky and risque, an entertaining overview of the most arousing films Hollywood has every produced. But make no mistake about it: This isn't a collection of esoteric "critic's choice" movies. The films reflect individual taste, rubbing against the grain of popular wisdom. And, because of the personal nature of the erotic forces at play, these essays will reveal more about the individual critics than perhaps they have revealed thus far to their readers. The Society is a world-renowned, marquee-name organization embracing some of America's most distinguished critics, more than forty writers who have followings nationally as well as devoted local constituencies in such major cities as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Minneapolis.Yes, The X List will have something for every lover of film-and for every lover.

Book excerpt: FICTION / LITERARY The Soul of the City is a tale of two cities, Belfast and London, in the heady, liberating days of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Young Jim Mitchell moves through a succession of jobs, girlfriends and apartments in the quest for personal fulfillment and his dream of becoming a writer in the face of often dispiriting circumstances. There is the trauma of his affair with Maureen, an older, married woman, and the trap of his career on the unrelenting white-collar production line of the Ministry of Truth, against the background of civil rights protest and the onset of the troubles in Belfast. Escaping to the space and freedom of London, Jim tries to live the dream of the bohemian writer but all too soon there is the pressing need to earn a living in the more mundane occupations on offer in the metropolis. Just when all seems lost, Jim meets and falls in love with the beautiful Anglo- Irish student Bridget and is drawn into an exciting student-hippy milieu of experimentation, idealism and fun. However, such pleasures are by definition transient and the young couple, Jim and Bridget, must strike out on their own, exploring love, intimacy and enlightenment together in their ongoing search for the soul of the city.
