Book Ellis Handbook of Mental Deficiency Psychological Theory and Research

Download or read book Ellis Handbook of Mental Deficiency Psychological Theory and Research written by William E. MacLean Jr. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 16 years since the publication of the second edition of this volume, psychological theory and research in mental retardation has continued to expand and extend scientific, theoretical, and clinical understanding of this most complex and challenging human condition. Explicit effort has been made to translate theory and research into useful and efficacious assessment, intervention, prevention, and policy actions. This third edition provides an opportunity to critique major conceptual developments and empirical research in an effort to stimulate further behavioral research of practical, social importance. The Handbook presents work by prominent contributors to a major scientific endeavor that has grown dramatically during the last three decades. The challenge for each author was to identify important theoretical and empirical issues, provide a critical, selective review of exemplary research, and discuss the questions that remain unanswered in each area. In short, the goal for this third edition was to consolidate the knowledge gained during the past 30 years and to present a blueprint for future research in mental retardation, the broader field of learning disabilities, and other developmental disorders such as autism. Providing totally different coverage and direction from the previous edition, this text fills a crucial instructional need in graduate courses related to the psychology of mental retardation. With its emphasis on psychological research and theory, it offers an important alternative to many available texts that primarily emphasize the application of research.

Book Reviewing Research in Special Education

Download or read book Reviewing Research in Special Education written by Jennifer Doran and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative collection combines research reviews in special education and an exploration of the findings from these reviews from practitioner and policy maker perspectives. It consists of five sets of papers, the first of which in each set presents a summary of a conventional research review, and the second – commonly produced in collaboration with teachers – translates the review findings into classroom and policy making implications. The first four sets of papers derive from work commissioned by the National Council for Special Education in Ireland. They deal with best practice and outcomes in the education of pupils who are deaf, visually impaired, on the autistic spectrum, or have emotional and behavioural difficulties. The fifth set is based on a review of explicit memory studies in populations with intellectual disabilities that was submitted to the European Journal of Special Needs Education. This direct pairing of technical and practitioner-oriented perspectives is relatively unusual, and the collection will be a useful addition to the literature for academics, practitioners and policy makers. This book was originally published as a special issue of the European Journal of Special Needs Education.

Download or read book Exceptional Children written by Ronald L. Taylor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exceptional Children: Integrating Research and Teaching provides a com prehensive introduction to the constantly changing area of special educa tion. The book is research-based, and its title reflects our opinion regarding the important link between research and classroom practice. There is one feature of Exceptional Children: Integrating Research and Teaching that warrants attention and perhaps justification; it was written specifically to address the graduate student or sophisticated undergraduate student mar ket. As such, the book is written at a higher level and with a greater concept density than typical introductory special education texts. We feel that this type of book is very much needed and will be received favorably by the special education community. There are also several unique features of Exceptional Children: Integrat ing Research and Teaching that we feel will be quite valuable. First, we have emphasized the area of teaching practices and not simply included basic facts about definitions, characteristics, and causes. Although some intro ductory texts include information about teaching considerations, that area is not discussed as in depth as it is in our text. We feel that it is important that readers not only understand the educational needs of exceptional chil dren, but also can identify the best educational practices to meet those needs.
