Book Field Investigation of Prestressed Reinforced Concrete Highway Bridges

Download or read book Field Investigation of Prestressed Reinforced Concrete Highway Bridges written by William Leo Gamble and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work accomplished over the 14.5 year life of this project is summarized, and the reports published as part of the study are referenced. Implementation of the results of the study has already been accomplished in two areas. The current loss-of-prestress provisions in the AASHTO Bridge Specification are based on recommendations prepared as part of the work of this project. Illinois DOT has stopped using span diaphragms in prestressed concrete highway bridges as a result of recommendations based on another phase of the study. The work be divided into three relatively separate phases. The first phase was the installation of deformation measuring instrumentation in three in-service bridges, the gathering of data, and the development of analysis procedures that enabled the data to be interpreted. The second phase involved the construction of relatively small scale prestressed bridge components, and their use to provide data to help confirm some information developed in the field study. The models were later tested to failure, and additional information about overload behavior was gained. The third phase was a study of the effects of span diaphragms on moment distributions in bridges, and it was concluded that these members were cost-ineffective and that their use should be discontinued.

Book Design of Precast Prestressed Bridge Girders Made Continuous

Download or read book Design of Precast Prestressed Bridge Girders Made Continuous written by R. G. Oesterle and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1989 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents and presents results of a study to determine time-dependent behavior and relevant design criteria for simple-span precast, prestressed bridge girders made continuous. A questionnaire was used to determine current practice. Creep and shrinkage tests of steam-cured concrete loaded at an early age were made. Computer simulations were used to investigate the effects of time-dependent material behavior and variation in design parameters on the effective continuity for live load plus impact. The findings suggest that positive moment connections in the diaphragms at the piers are not required and provide no structural advantages. The findings also suggest that effective continuity for live load plus impact can vary from 0 to 100% dependent on the design parameters and timing of construction. Computer analyses were also used to determine an upper limit for the amount of negative moment reinforcement over the supports to insure full moment redistribution and attainment of maximum bridge strength. New computer programs were developed for simplified analysis to determine time-dependent effects and service moments. Recommendations for design procedures were presented and design examples given.

Book Long Term Behavior of Integral Abutment Bridges

Download or read book Long Term Behavior of Integral Abutment Bridges written by Robert J. Frosch and published by Joint Transportation Research Program. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integral abutment (IA) construction has become the preferred method over conventional construction for use with typical highway bridges. However, the use of these structures is limited due to state mandated length and skew limitations. To expand their applicability, studies were implemented to define limitations supported by rational analysis rather than simply engineering judgment. Previous research investigations have resulted in larger length limits and an overall better understanding of these structures. However, questions still remain regarding IA behavior; specifically questions regarding long-term behavior and effects of skew. To better define the behavior of these structures, a study was implemented to specifically investigate the long term behavior of IA bridges. First, a field monitoring program was implemented to observe and understand the in-service behavior of three integral abutment bridges. The results of the field investigation were used to develop and calibrate analytical models that adequately capture the long-term behavior. Second, a single-span, quarter-scale integral abutment bridge was constructed and tested to provide insight on the behavior of highly skewed structures. From the acquired knowledge from both the field and laboratory investigations, a parametric analysis was conducted to characterize the effects of a broad range of parameters on the behavior of integral abutment bridges. This study develops an improved understanding of the overall behavior of IA bridges. Based on the results of this study, modified length and skew limitations for integral abutment bridge are proposed. In addition, modeling recommendations and guidelines have been developed to aid designers and facilitate the increased use of integral abutment bridges.
