Book From Main Street to Wall Street

Download or read book From Main Street to Wall Street written by Jesper Rangvid and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the long run, economies grow. Over the shorter-term business cycle, economic activity contracts and expands. From Main Street to Wall Street examines both the long-run relation between economic growth and stock returns and the shorter-term business-cycle relation. It examines the complex relationship between the economy and the stock market, and guides readers through the fascinating interaction between economic activity and financial markets. From Main Street to Wall Street draws heavily on data, supporting academic theories with empirical facts, and backing up arguments in intuitive ways. It discusses how investors can use knowledge of economic activity and financial markets to formulate expectations to future stock returns, and helps scholars and practitioners navigate financial markets by understanding the economy.

Book Stock Market Development and Long Run Growth

Download or read book Stock Market Development and Long Run Growth written by Sara Zervos and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a strong empirical association between stock market development and long-term economic growth? Cross-country regressions suggest that there is a positive and robust association.Levine and Zervos empirically evaluate the relationship between stock market development and long-term growth. The data suggest that stock market development is positively associated with economic growth. Moreover, instrumental variables procedures indicate a strong connection between the predetermined component of stock market development and economic growth in the long run. While cross-country regressions imply a strong link between stock market development and economic growth, the results should be viewed as suggestive partial correlations that stimulate additional research rather than as conclusive findings. Much work remains to be done to shed light on the relationship between stock market development and economic growth. Careful case studies might help identify causal relationships and further research could be done on the time-series property of such relationships.Research should also be done to identify policies that facilitate the development of sound securities markets. This paper - a product of the Finance and Private Sector Development Division, Policy Research Department - is part of a larger effort in the department to study the relationship between financial systems and economic growth. The study was funded by the Bank's Research Support Budget under the research project Stock Market Development and Financial Intermediary Growth (RPO 679-53).

Book Dynamic Interactions Among Interest Rates Stock Market Inflation and Real Economic Activity

Download or read book Dynamic Interactions Among Interest Rates Stock Market Inflation and Real Economic Activity written by Nikiforos T. Laopodis and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the dynamic linkages among the equity market, economic activity, inflation and monetary policy since the 1970s. The main findings are as follows. First, bivariate results for the linkages between real stock returns and inflation confirm the surprising result of negative correlation between the two magnitudes for the 1970s and 1980s. Second, the bivariate and multivariate findings suggest a weak negative relationship between real stock returns and the federal funds rate for every decade. Third, the results for the real stock returns-real activity pair reveal a weak negative relationship in the 1970s and 1990s, a positive in the 1980s, but no significant relationship within the multivariate framework. Finally, our results seem to imply that there is no concrete and consistent dynamic relationship between monetary policy and the stock market and that the nature of such dynamics has been different in each decade.

Book De los recursos naturales a la econom a del conocimiento

Download or read book De los recursos naturales a la econom a del conocimiento written by David M. De Ferranti and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study questions whether, after a decade of remarkable progress in trade reform, Latin America and the Caribbean really integrates into the global market, offering a promising rapid growth, and good jobs for its workers. For despite the incidence of the loosely called "knowledge economy", the concern prevails that most countries' rich natural resources, still are the determining factor for exports. Policy recommendations include fostering openness to trade, market access, and foreign direct investment flows, in addition to building human capital, institutions, and public infrastructure, without disregarding the natural advantages. To this end, policymakers should aim at developing educational systems that provide quality education, focused on lifelong learning, and training activities to build human capital. Emphasis should follow on research and development (R&D) incentives, and innovations systems, arguing that countries should experiment with taxation incentives, and subsidies to promote both private, and public investments in R&D, (dependent on the institutional capacity of governments to enforce tax laws, and monitor the quality of investments). Moreover, evidence in this report, suggests that information, and communications technology (ICT) can reduce coordination costs, enabling an effective industrialization, and market access.

Book Domestic Workers Across the World

Download or read book Domestic Workers Across the World written by Malte Luebker and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication sheds light on the magnitude of domestic work, a sector often "invisible" behind the doors of private households and unprotected by national legislation. The adoption of new international labour standards on domestic work (Convention No. 189 and its accompanying Recommendation No. 201) by the ILO at its 100th International Labour Conference in June 2011 represents a key milestone on the path to the realisation of decent work for domestic workers. This volume presents national statistics and new global and regional estimates on the number of domestic workers. It shows that domestic workers represent a significant share of the labour force worldwide and that domestic work is an important source of wage employment for women, especially in Latin America and Asia. It also examines the extent of inclusion or exclusion of domestic workers from key working conditions laws. In particular, it analyses how many domestic workers are covered by working time provisions, minimum wage legislation and maternity protection. The results demonstrate that under current national laws, substantial gaps in protection still remain. The volume concludes with a summary of the main findings and a reflection on the relevance of the newly adopted international standards to extend legal protection to domestic workers.
