Book Global Sources of Local Pollution

Download or read book Global Sources of Local Pollution written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-02-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in air pollution monitoring and modeling capabilities have made it possible to show that air pollution can be transported long distances and that adverse impacts of emitted pollutants cannot be confined to one country or even one continent. Pollutants from traffic, cooking stoves, and factories emitted half a world away can make the air we inhale today more hazardous for our health. The relative importance of this "imported" pollution is likely to increase, as emissions in developing countries grow, and air quality standards in industrial countries are tightened. Global Sources of Local Pollution examines the impact of the long-range transport of four key air pollutants (ozone, particulate matter, mercury, and persistent organic pollutants) on air quality and pollutant deposition in the United States. It also explores the environmental impacts of U.S. emissions on other parts of the world. The book recommends that the United States work with the international community to develop an integrated system for determining pollution sources and impacts and to design effective response strategies. This book will be useful to international, federal, state, and local policy makers responsible for understanding and managing air pollution and its impacts on human health and well-being.

Book Long Range Transport of Airborne Pollutants

Download or read book Long Range Transport of Airborne Pollutants written by H.C. Martin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-Range Transport of Airborne Pollutants and Acid Rain Conference This issue of Water, Air, and Soil Pollution is devoted to the collection of papers presented at the Long-Range Transport of Airborne Pollutants and Acid Rain Con ference held at Albany, N.Y., April 27-30, 1981. The issue includes most of the invited papers as well as a good number of the poster papers. The conference consisted of seven plenary sessions at which the invited papers were presented. After each session the participants discussed the session topic in the poster area where the subject was further explored and expanded. The seven technical sessions were: (1) Networks. (2) Models of Delivery. (3) Interactions with Soils and Ground Water. (4) Calibrated Water Sheds. (5) Effects on Aquatic Biota. (6) Effects on Terrestrial Biota. (7) Health implications. The closing session was devoted to the topic 'The Application of Scientific and Technical Data to the Development of Government Policy; Acid Rain - A Case Study'. The four papers given are not included here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report highlights critical issues concerning the long-range transport of air pollutants in North America with the intent of fostering increased trilateral cooperation at all levels to deal with this pressing problem. This study reviews the nature, extent, and significance of the pathways by which pollutants travel to, from, and within North America. This report speaks to the public concerns over worsening air quality, reviews, opportunities for cooperation between the three countries, and suggests ways to further the development of a joint strategy for addressing issues of air pollution in North America, by looking at the problem from a transboundary and regional North American perspective.

Book Air Pollution Science for the 21st Century

Download or read book Air Pollution Science for the 21st Century written by J. Austin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-10-31 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acid rain, photochemistry, long-range transport of pollutants, greenhouse gas emissions and aerosols have dominated tropospheric air pollution for the last 30 years of the 20th century. At the start of the 21st century, acid rain is subject to planned improvement in Europe and North America, but is still a growing problem in Asia. Tropospheric ozone is understood much better, but the problem is still with us, and desirable levels are difficult to achieve over continental Europe. The heterogeneous chemistry that is responsible for ozone depletion in the stratosphere is now reasonably clear, but there is on-going interest in the sources and sinks of CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) replacements in the troposphere. There is also increasing interest in indoor air quality, and the origin and health implications of atmospheric particles. Perhaps most important on a global perspective, intensive research has not yet determined the relationship between greenhouse gases, aerosols and surface temperature. The climactic implications of these are now more urgent than ever. This book, the first in the Developments in Environmental Science series, consists of a collection of authoritative reviews and essays on the science and application of air pollution research at the start of this new century.

Book Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution 2010

Download or read book Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution 2010 written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 852 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution (TF HTAP) was created by the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP Convention) in December 2004 to improve the understanding of the intercontinental transport of air pollutants across the Northern Hemisphere. This multivolume assessment produced by the TF HTAP reviews the state-of-the-science with respect to the intercontinental transport of ozone (O3), particulate matter (PM), mercury (Hg), and persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
