Book excerpt: Some of the hypotheses put forward in recent years to account for vertebrate navigation ability are examined theoretically and by experiments. Methods of interfering with the suggested external stimuli and the suggested sensory and information-processing systems are described, with special reference to hypotheses involving a use of the semicircular canals of the labyrinth as receptors for mechanical or electromagnetic guiding forces. Negative results were obtained in experiments with geomagnetic, inertial, and radio-wave guidance in pigeons. Preliminary attempts to eliminate bilaterally the sensors for vertical rotation in pigeons by ultrasound and high-energy proton irradiation suggest no adverse effect on initial orientation and homing success at distances less than 30 km; at greater distances no decisive results are yet available. A device for testing celestial navigation in small birds using a large prism on top of a Kramer cage is briefly described; and some data are given from orientation experiments with tortoises. Book excerpt: The physical and sensory basis of navigation in fish, turtles, birds, and bats has been examined theoretically and by experiment. The stars are found to be superior for several reasons to the sun as potential cues in visual navigation. The advantage of non-visual over visual navigation increases rapidly with increasing size of the sense organs, which may help to explain certain differences in homing behaviour between small and large animals. Methods are suggested to differentiate between navigation systems based on measurements of (a) the altitude of the stars, (b) the altitude of the sun, (c) the position of celestial radio sources, (d) the inertial forces experienced during the outward journey prior to homing, (e) the intensity of gravity, (f) the intensity and direction of the Coriolis force, and (g) the intensity and direction of the geomagnetic field. Some results of such tests and of other experiments are reported. (Author).

Coming several years since its predecessor conferences, at a time of a new popularization of ecology and a growing availability of advanced technology, the Wallops Station symposium reflected its temporal and geographic setting. The papers and discussions of this volume contrast the classical approaches to phenomena of ancient interest, the beginnings made in applying satellite technology, and the conceptual and methodological advances in experimental biology which have taken place in the past few years.
