Book Long Period Variable Stars and the Globular Cluster NGC 5927

Download or read book Long Period Variable Stars and the Globular Cluster NGC 5927 written by Liam Daly and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long period variable stars (LPV) are pulsating variables with very long periods in the range of 30 to 1000 days. As a consequence, they have proved challenging to study effectively and are therefore poorly understood. This study focuses on the study and classification of the LPVs in the metal-rich globular cluster NGC 5927, which has not had a variable star focused investigation since a search using photographic plates in 1977, at which point 11 LPV stars were discovered but only five were assigned a period. The data used in this study comes from the PROMPT5 telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. CCD images were captured in the V and I bands between January 2009 and October 2014. Photometry was performed on the images using the image subtraction software ISIS in order to generate lightcurves. Additional data for potential NGC 5927 variables was mined from the ASAS-SN online variable star database. A color-magnitude diagram of NGC 5927 was generated using the DAOPHOT software. Of the 11 previously known LPVs, eight were captured in the ISIS field of view, leading to updated periods and variable type classification for those eight LPVs. Additionally, four new LPVs were discovered with high confidence, while 14 additional LPVs were identified with low confidence, and 14 further potential variables were identified but not able to be confirmed with the data. The lower confidence variables are correspondingly lower amplitude and less evolved. Future efforts to shore up the low confidence variables and inspect the possible variables would advance the understanding of LPVs even further.

Book Observing Variable Stars

    Book Details:
  • Author : David H. Levy
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1998-04-16
  • ISBN : 9780521627559
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Observing Variable Stars written by David H. Levy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-04-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Levy's entertaining, well-researched book is aimed at the amateur enthusiast who likes to learn enjoyably. Beginning with advice on binoculars and telescopes, and how to observe the night sky effectively, the author goes on to describe thoroughly the field of variable star observation, a field in which amateurs have made important contributions. He shows how to interpret variations in light output in terms of the life of a star, from birth through to sometimes violent death. All of the major variable stars are described and classified, as well as other variable objects such as active galaxies, asteroids, comets and the sun. The book also contains a guide to the seasonal night sky. Throughout, practical observations serve to complement the text, producing an exciting, very readable introduction to this fascinating subject.
