Book Designing for Integrity in Long Life Composite Aircraft Structures

Download or read book Designing for Integrity in Long Life Composite Aircraft Structures written by RW. Walter and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of test programs conducted to obtain structural performance information essential to the design of long-life composite aircraft structure are presented. Static, fatigue, and fracture tests were conducted on T300/5208 and T300/5209 graphite/epoxy laminate specimens which were representative of full-scale strength-designed laminates. Results showed that static tensile and compressive strength are significantly degraded by discontinuities and impact damage. Laminates with representative fiber damage are relatively insensitive to cyclic tensile loadings; however, cyclic compressive loading results in finite fatigue lives. Impact damage which caused barely visible fiber failure was found to reduce fatigue performance below that defined for an open hole. The graphite/epoxy laminates tested were found to be fracture sensitive. Laminate stacking sequence was found to have a significant influence on fracture strength and failure mode.

Book Aircraft Sustainment and Repair

Book excerpt: Aircraft Sustainment and Repair is a one-stop-shop for practitioners and researchers in the field of aircraft sustainment, adhesively bonded aircraft joints, bonded composites repairs, and the application of cold spray to military and civil aircraft. Outlining the state-of-the-art in aircraft sustainment, this book covers the use of quantitative fractography to determine the in-service crack length versus flight hours curve, the effect of intergranular cracking on structural integrity and the structural significance of corrosion. The book additionally illustrates the potential of composite repairs and SPD applications to metallic airframes. Covers corrosion damage assessment and management in aircraft structures Includes a key chapter on U.S. developments in the emerging field of supersonic particle deposition (SPD) Shows how to design and assess the potential benefits of both bonded composite repairs and SPD repairs to metallic aircraft structures to meet the damage tolerance requirements inherent in FAA ac 20-107b and the U.S. Joint Services

Book New Materials for Next Generation Commercial Transports

Download or read book New Materials for Next Generation Commercial Transports written by Committee on New Materials for Advanced Civil Aircraft and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-03-29 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major objective of this book was to identify issues related to the introduction of new materials and the effects that advanced materials will have on the durability and technical risk of future civil aircraft throughout their service life. The committee investigated the new materials and structural concepts that are likely to be incorporated into next generation commercial aircraft and the factors influencing application decisions. Based on these predictions, the committee attempted to identify the design, characterization, monitoring, and maintenance issues that are critical for the introduction of advanced materials and structural concepts into future aircraft.

Book Concepts in Fail safe Design of Aircraft Structures

Download or read book Concepts in Fail safe Design of Aircraft Structures written by David Broek and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to obtain an appraisal of the state of the art of fail-safe design, the author made an investory of fail-safe design methods applied by various aerospace companies and of research work relevant to the engineering approach of fatigue-crack propagation and residual strength. This memorandum is based on information from discussions with personnel of several companies and research laboratories, with the main emphasis on plane stress and transitional fracture behavior. The memorandum presents a brief description of the general approach to the fail-safe problem, an analysis of several of the existing methods that use this approach, including their shortcomings, and a summary of the data required for a good fail-safe design. A specific approach proposed for the presentation in MIL-HDBK-5 of data pertinent to the fail-safe design concept is evaluated in terms of its applicability to that concept. (Author).

Book Long Life Damage Tolerant Jet Transport Structures

Download or read book Long Life Damage Tolerant Jet Transport Structures written by UG. Goranson and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criteria and procedures used in commercial aircraft design over the last two decades have produced long-life damage tolerant structures with a credible safety record. This has been achieved through diligent attention to detail design, manufacturing, maintenance, and inspection procedures. Recent updates of federal regulations governing fatigue and fail-safe strength evaluation of transport category airplane structures and advancements in the capability to analyze damaged structure have spurred new technological developments. Adaptation of traditional fatigue and fracture mechanics technologies plus a large test and service experience data base have led to development of technology control methods suitable for nonspecialist engineers.
