Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Long Island to-Day: Consisting of Sketches on the Political, Industrial, Topographical and Geological History of Long Island and Long Island Towns and Villages, but More Particularly of General Views Illustrating Long Island Scenes of to-Day History is most always interesting; the history of Long Island particularly so, for the Island was more or less honorably associated with the many struggles of the great American Republic, from the earliest Indian Wars to the late war with Spain., But Long Island has entirely too much past history to allow more than a mere glimpse of it to appear in this contribution to its literature. The object of this publication, therefore, is really more in the nature of a pictorial history of Long Island scenes of general interest as they appear to - day. I think the work is quite unusual and will be of interest to the present day Long Islander, as well as to the Long Islander two score years or more hence. The beauty of Long Island's scenery, the fertility of its soil, the purity of its air and water is known and appreciated by thousands of people. Book excerpt: "Taking Long Island as a unit of space which has for lung ages been on the border line between land and sea, Professor Gabriel shows clearly how human development in the region has been controlled very largely by the same cosmic circumstances responsible for the type of vegetation and native animal life."-"Technical Book Review Index," Volumes 6-7 [1922]* * * * *From the Foreword. The problem of the present study is to trace the development of a people as it has been affected, not only by its social and economic, but by its natural surroundings. Long Island is a definite entity, with boundaries fixed and easily determined. On every side the sea washes its shores. It is not, however, an oceanic island, isolated in the midst of one of the broad seas. It is a fragment of the North American continent, and its life is inextricably intermingled with that of the greater land body. Lying off the Atlantic coast of the United States it is, in reality, a part of that eastern coast zone which stretches back from the water's edge to the ridges of the Appalachians. Like every such coastal region, it is a transition zone between the two dominant forms of the earth's surface, the land and the sea.Long Island, however, is not a typical coastal area with the sea on one side and the hinterland on the other. In this region the influence of both of these factors is greatly intensified. The ocean, literally surrounding the Island and asserting its mastery in a multitude of coves, bays, and harbors, would seem to be in a fair position to dominate the life of the region. But Long Island is set down in an unusual position. Three gateways open into the broad interior of America, the Mississippi, the St. Lawrence, and the Hudson-Mohawk valleys. The first is far from Europe and the second is icebound during parts of the year. It is the Hudson, the central gateway, therefore, that, working through a system of lakes, canals, and railways, taps the limitless resources of the heart of the North American continent. It is this hinterland, acting through the metropolis which it has created at the entrance to the greatest of the three gateways, that contends with the encircling sea for the mastery of Long Island. These are the giant gamesters that play at moving hither and thither the kings, queens, castles, and pawns in the great game that is still unfinished. The story of this game is the problem of these pages....

Book The Long Island Sound

Download or read book The Long Island Sound written by Marilyn E. Weigold and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2004-08 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning the shores of Connecticut and Long Island, New York, the Long Island Sound is one of the most picturesque places in North America. From the discovery of the Sound in 1614, to the adventures of Captain Kidd, to the sinking of the Lexington in the sound in 1840, the Long Island Sound also holds a unique place in American history. The Long Island Sound traces the growth of fishing and shipbuilding villages along the sound to the development of major industrial ports, resort towns, and suburban communities along the sound. Marilyn Weigold discusses the subsequent overcrowding and pollution that resulted from this prosperity and expansion. Originally published in 1974 as The American Mediterranean and long out of print, The Long Island Sound has been updated by the author with a new preface and final chapter describing the Sound in the twenty-first century. In this new edition, Weigold particularly focuses on environmental concerns, and describes more current milestones, like the Long Island Pine Barrens Society, who fought and won in 1995 to set aside 100,000 acres as NY State's first forest preserve; the continuous construction of the Long Island Expressway, with its forty-one miles of HOV lanes; the attempt made by several of Connecticut's coastal cities to reinvigorate urban redevelopment; and the Long Island Sound Study's investigation of toxic substances—both natural and man-made—which continue to contaminate the waterway. Through over 40 stunning photographs and many fascinating stories, The Long Island Sound tells the history of a vastly populated, but underdiscussed, part of America.

Book History of Long Island City New York

Download or read book History of Long Island City New York written by J. S. Kelsey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Long Island City, New York: A Record of Its Early Settlement and Corporate Progress; Sketches of the Villages That Were Absorbed in the Growth of the Present Municipality; Its Business, Finance, Manufactures, and Form of Government; With Some Notice of the Men Who Built the City Those who first trod the soil of Newtown were such men. Their lives were inwrought as a salutary power into the fabric of a rising community for several generations. Dutch and English, Saxon, and Celt were they. What their names and deeds the following pages will attempt to tell. Not a little difficulty has been encountered in the fact that until recent years the territory of this city was a part of the town of Newtown. To draw the line sharply at the municipal confines has often been at the sacrifice of important interests, yet the definite purpose of the history imperiously so required. The olden past is a rich mine of surpassing value. Exhaustive exploration would require years of time. Such has not been the object of compiling these pages. From events, persons, and places, have been gathered the most accessible material, only for the purpose of preparing a souvenir volume historically descriptive of this city ere its individuality shall have been lost in that of Greater New York. Book Greenlawn

  • ISBN : 9780738504568
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Greenlawn written by Louise Dougher and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the archives of the Greenlawn-Centerport Historical Association comes this striking visual history of the north shore Long Island hamlet of Greenlawn. Originally known as Oldfields, the area was settled in the early 1800s by farmers. The extension of the Long Island Railroad through the farmlands in 1867-1868 provided the impetus for the development of a profitable pickle and cabbage industry, the growth of the community, and the arrival of vacationers, many of whom soon became year-round residents. Greenlawn includes stories of the Halloween eve conflagration, the Adirondack-style vacation retreat, the opera house, the farmhouse murders, the vaudevillians, and the Pickle King, among others. Today, houses cover the old farmlands; yet Greenlawnwith -one main street of small shops, a railroad crossing that halts traffic throughout the day, and many historical buildings-still retains its small-town charm.
