Extensive research has occurred in relation to various aspects of vehicle driving, however this has been mostly related to the heavy vehicle industry. What is available in the form of employer or industry based preventative initiatives generally covers no more than a few risks or hazards, such as fatigue management strategies. With statistics showing us that on average, 6 people pe week are killed as a result of work-related vehicle accidents, the importance of further work being completed in this area cannot be underestimated. A literature review was conducted in order to examine in detail the multitude of hazards and risks employees are exposed to while traveling long distances for work purposes . Information was obtained from a variety of journals and publications, internet web sites, legislative documents, WorkCover authorities and discussions with relevant industry bodies and organisations. Findings of this literature search identified four potential hazards as sources of injury, and twenty-one potential risk factors that increased the risks of injury, all associated with vehicle driving for work purposes. Various measures to control these hazards and risks have been identified which includes the use of a legislative framework for hazard management, in the form of the hierarchy of controls. One of the key findings being the contradiction between the philosophies of workplace safety legislation that aim to make the environment safe and road laws that focus on safe behaviors. ......................." -- Abstract.
