Download or read book Big Lonesome written by Joseph Scapellato and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inventive, ranging debut story collection from a writer hailed by Charles Yu as "a stunningly original voice—warm, bleak, dark, ecstatic, full of silences and power and life" Reinventing a great American tradition through an absurdist, discerning eye, Joseph Scapellato uses these twenty-five stories to conjure worlds, themes, and characters who are at once unquestionably familiar and undeniably strange. Big Lonesome navigates through the American West—from the Old West to the modern-day West to the Midwest, from cowboys to mythical creatures to everything in between—exploring place, myth, masculinity, and what it means to be whole or to be broken. Though he works in the tradition of George Saunders and Patrick deWitt—writing subversive, surreal, and affecting stories that unveil the surprising inner lives of ordinary people and the mythic dimensions of our everyday lives—"Scapellato’s Big Lonesome is unlike anything else you’ve ever read" (Robert Boswell).

Download or read book The Little Bookstore of Big Stone Gap written by Wendy Welch and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspiring true story about losing your place, finding your purpose, and building a community one book at a time. Wendy Welch and her husband had always dreamed of owning a bookstore, so when they left their high-octane jobs for a simpler life in an Appalachian coal town, they seized an unexpected opportunity to pursue thier dream. The only problems? A declining U.S. economy, a small town with no industry, and the advent of the e-book. They also had no idea how to run a bookstore. Against all odds, but with optimism, the help of their Virginian mountain community, and an abiding love for books, they succeeded in establishing more than a thriving business - they built a community. The Little Bookstore of Big Stone Gap is the little bookstore that could: how two people, two cats, two dogs, and thirty-eight thousand books helped a small town find its heart. It is a story about people and books, and how together they create community.

Download or read book Realms written by Doug Hodges and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is my third collection of Spirit Animal Tales. Following in the steps of The Voice Of Coyote and The Way It Was, the Spirits are still sharing their stories. Coyote, Raven, and the rest keepin' on, with all their humor, pathos, lessons, and irony. As before, these stories run the gamet from cutely simplistic to maturely complicated. Likewise, though they are often filtered through my own mind, my experiences, my times, they are not my stories. I am a conduit, perhaps even a catalyst at times; always a chronicler of a gift given. The one constant in each of these tales is 'Spirit'. The Spirits of Raven, Coyote, a horde of animals and humans, the earth, sky and sea intereact and form these writings. Also, I herein place two tales of long before my Quest, tales of the Dog World, one of which is deffinately a children's story. These were gifts long before I realized there were such gifts. For these, I am ever greatful and I am honored to be finaly able to share them. My one word of caution to the reader is this. Many ideas are covered in these books and don't be surprised if a button or two may be pushed. I find it fascinating that when people come and talk to me about the books, each has at least one particular story that has touched them. There seem to be no group favorites (or unfavorites). I see this as proof that certain stories were given for certain people. In any event, whether you are a previous reader or would care to begin your journey through this entertaining world of Spirit, this myriad maze of manic happenstance, you are humbly invited. There are Realms without number and Coyote and the others are ready to speak.

Download or read book Lonesome written by Chris Czajkowski and published by TouchWood Editions. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charming, humorous and utterly engaging, this is a book that will make readers laugh and cry. Written from the point of view and in the voice of the author’s dog, Lonesome, its observations of life in the wilds reveal a dog with great character, charm and attitude. Named for her first home, remote Lonesome Lake in British Columbia’s Tweedsmuir Park, Lonesome was a first-rate companion: obedient, mannerly, brave, yet occasionally cynical. She did not share her human’s love of the wilderness, and wore a martyred expression for most of her life. She would have much preferred a life in the suburbs, “with nice safe walks in the park and a cozy bed inside the house.” Lonesome’s memoirs paint a vivid and not altogether flattering picture of her life with Chris, but as she states, “I am not a vindictive creature and this book will remain family reading.” Lonesome loftily points out in her introduction that her book focuses on events not already recounted in Chris’s previous books, and she shares her unique canine perspective on their day-to-day life in the wilds.

Download or read book The Summer Guests written by Mary Alice Monroe and published by Gallery Books. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “authentic, generous, and heartfelt” (Mary Kay Andrews, New York Times bestselling author) novel from the New York Times bestselling author of the Beach House series is about the bonds and new beginnings that are born from disasters and how, even during the worst of circumstances—or perhaps because of them—we discover what is most important in life. Late August is a beautiful time on the Southern coast—the peach trees are ripe, the ocean is warm, and the sweet tea is icy. It’s the perfect time to enjoy the rocking chairs on the porch. But beneath the calm surface bubbles a threat: it’s also peak hurricane season. When a hurricane threatens the coasts of Florida and South Carolina, an eclectic group of evacuees flees for the farm of their friends Grace and Charles Phillips in North Carolina: the Phillips’s daughter Moira and her rescue dogs, famed equestrian Javier Angel de la Cruz, makeup artist Hannah McLain, horse breeder Gerda Klug and her daughter Elise, and island resident Cara Rutledge. Strangers to all but the Phillips, they must ride out the storm together. During the course of one of the most challenging weeks of their lives, relationships are put to the test as the evacuees are forced to confront the unresolved issues they have with themselves and with each other. But as the storm passes, they realize that what really matters isn’t what they brought with them to the mountains. Rather, it’s what they’ll take with them once they leave. “Fans of Elin Hilderbrand and Wendy Wax will enjoy the picturesque setting and heartwarmingly intertwined character arcs” (Booklist) and “Monroe writes gorgeously, with authority and tenderness, about the natural world and its power to inspire, transport, and to heal” (Susan Wiggs, #1 New York Times bestselling author).
