Book excerpt: An Unquiet Heart Alone in her tower, Princess Oria has spent too long studying her people’s barbarian enemies, the Destrye—and neglected the search for calm that will control her magic and release her to society. Her restlessness makes meditation hopeless and her fragility renders human companionship unbearable. Oria is near giving up. Then the Destrye attack, and her people’s lives depend on her handling of their prince… A Fight Without Hope When the cornered Destrye decided to strike back, Lonen never thought he’d live through the battle, let alone demand justice as a conqueror. And yet he must keep up his guard against the sorceress who speaks for the city. Oria’s people are devious, her claims of ignorance absurd. The frank honesty her eyes promise could be just one more layer of deception. A Savage Bargain Fighting for time and trust, Oria and Lonen have one final sacrifice to choose… before an even greater threat consumes them all

Rendiran, a healer for one of the greatest Temples takes the poor child's body to a shrine where he appeals to Irenick, a God that stands for justice and truth. The boy returns with a mission: to become a Paragon of Irenick and usher in a new age of peace and justice as His Paladin. The successful resurrection of the child causes political intrigue, attracts mad priests from other temples who want to capture him for sacrifice so they can raise their own Gods, and the beginning of a war that will last for decades. Secrets are unearthed, plots are formulated, quick action is taken as Rendiran and a few trusted companions make decisions that will have far reaching consequences. An epic tale that reaches as high as the heavens and as low as the mountain caverns of Forge Hin begins here. From the author of Brightwill, Dark Arts and the Spinward Fringe series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 22, 1941, Germany launched the greatest land assault in history on the Soviet Union, an attack that Adolf Hitler deemed crucial to ensure German economic and political survival. As the key theater of the war for the Germans, the eastern front consumed enormous levels of resources and accounted for 75 percent of all German casualties. Despite the significance of this campaign to Germany and to the war as a whole, few English-language publications of the last thirty-five years have addressed these pivotal events. In Ostkrieg: Hitler's War of Extermination in the East, Stephen G. Fritz bridges the gap in scholarship by incorporating historical research from the last several decades into an accessible, comprehensive, and coherent narrative. His analysis of the Russo-German War from a German perspective covers all aspects of the eastern front, demonstrating the interrelation of military events, economic policy, resource exploitation, and racial policy that first motivated the invasion. This in-depth account challenges accepted notions about World War II and promotes greater understanding of a topic that has been neglected by historians.

Book Cardinal Mercier in the First World War

Download or read book Cardinal Mercier in the First World War written by Jan De Volder and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church leaders and their contrasting opinions in the face of the Great War Cardinal Désiré-Joseph Mercier, Archbishop of Malines, was the incarnation of the Belgian resistance against the German occupation during the First World War. With his famous pastoral letter of Christmas 1914 ‘Patriotisme et Endurance’ he reached a wide audience, and gained international influence and respect. Mercier’s distinct patriotic stance clearly determined his views of national politics, especially of the 'Flemish question', and his conflict with the German occupier made him a hero of the Allies. The Germans did not always know how to handle this influential man of the Church. Pope Benedict XV did not always approve of the course of action adopted by the Belgian prelate. Whereas Mercier justified the war effort as a just cause in view of the restoration of Belgium's independence, the Pope feared that "this useless massacre" meant nothing but the "suicide of civilized Europe”. Through a critical analysis of the policies of Cardinal Mercier and Pope Benedict XV, this book sheds revealing light on the contrasting positions of Church leaders in the face of the Great War.

Essays focus on the decisions of commanders, inter-allied negotiations, trench culture, prisoners of war, the sailors' war, key developments along the Eastern Front, and how colonial troops experienced the war. Other essays consider the impact of the war on civilians under occupation, the creation of humanitarian relief missions, as well as how the memory of the war affected postwar pacifist movements and the problems faced by wounded veterans.
