Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London's Peril He was seated in the library at his country house, a sheet of the Times perched awkwardly across his knees. It was about eleven o'clock in the forenoon. He had paid a visit to his favourite greenhouse, and was gratified to find that his pet plants looked, if possible, more flourishing than usual. His letter-bag had been a lean one, and his principal correspondence had already been dictated to his secretary. The library was a pleasant room, the sun was bright, and a gentle breeze mingled itself with the rays which danced in through the open window. A knock disturbed the reverie of his lordship, and possibly ruffled the serenity of his temper. The butler who entered saw the cloud on his master's brow, and his hard, expressionless face looked harder and more expressionless than ever as he crossed the room with feet that made no sound upon the floor. The Secretary of State lazily took a visiting card off the salver and scrutinized it through his glasses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London Etchings Whether he drinks it from earthen vessels of winter or from golden stoups of summer, it is never anything but water now; yet he can still remember some times how, long ago, one dazzling mom ing when the spirit of spring breathed a new soul into the world, there came on him also a sudden change, and the water of his life blushed to wine. The miracle happened in this wise bending that morning, as usual, over his writing, he was suddenly thrilled by an ethereal singing, every note of which wavered, a wonderful bubble of sound, down into the dead stillness of the square and burst, filling it with thin echoes. He caught his breath and, glancing in bewilderment at the houses Opposite, saw the singer, a fair young girl, reaching from an attic casement to hang a bird cage on a nail. The sun was flashing in the upper windows on the other side of the square. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He appeared to have no doubt upon the point; but then it belonged to his profession to be as confident in danger as in safety, and to be able to steer amidst rocks with a bold heart. So, like a true seaman, he kept his own counsel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London Days a Book of Reminiscences One day at dusk, in the autumn of 1878, when I was eighteen, I arrived at the heart of the world. I was fresh from New England, and had left Boston, my native city, seventeen days before, em barking at New York on the Anchor liner Alsatia three days later; disembarking at Tilbury after a turbulent voyage that lasted two weeks to the hour. What was left of me passed from the Fen church Street Station into Leadenhall Street, the least of three passengers in a four-wheeled cab. Through the cab windows, and the ghost of fog which simmered over gas lamps, flashed glimpses of the city, splashes Of light on the pavements illumin ated windows bound in brass, cumbrous drays and 'busses, and great grey horses, and glistening pubs. The air was heavy with smoke. I heard the tramp of thousands and thousands of persons, all home ward bound, and all wearing top hats. And, Of all names, there at the right on a clothier's sign, the enamelled legend: Dombey and Son! My head was packed with Dickens, and in a pocket was a linen-backed map. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Meg's Children and Alone in London In the East End of London, more than a mile from St. Paul's Cathedral, and lying near to the docks, there is a tangled knot of narrow streets and lanes, crossing and running into one another, with blind alleys and courts leading out of them, and low arched passages, and dark gullies, and unsuspected slums, hiding away at the back of the narrowest streets; forming altogether such a labyrinth of roads and dwellings, that one needs a guide to thread a way among them, as upon pathless solitudes or deserts of shifting sands. Download or read book Reading written by Roger Beard and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-20 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of reading is a compelling one, characterised by many debates and discussions. It is also amenable to investigations through a range of theories and research studies. In this book, eight leading authorities provide a ‘state-of-the-art’ overview of reading, using perspectives that have informed their work. There are overviews from linguistic, psychological, sociological and literary viewpoints, as well as more hybrid ones from investigations of digital literacy and multi-modality. This book celebrates what has already been achieved by bridging research, scholarship and practice; it also suggests what still needs to be done to bring the positive rewards from reading to greater numbers of young people. It also recognises that the benefits of reading extend beyond the personal. Accomplished reading skills empower people to meet the challenges of everyday life: making decisions, solving problems, and dealing with unexpected events. The need to refresh and renew our knowledge of reading has gained further impetus in the ‘information age’. New technologies for information and communication continually appear: manifestations of ‘fake news’, disinformation and conspiracy theories spread rapidly across the globe. The book underlines the importance not only of reading, but also the fact that reading between and beyond the lines is more important than ever, in print and across multiple media platforms. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Education 3–13: International Journal of Primary, Elementary and Early Years Education.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A blackly comic late 20th-century murder mystery set against the looming end of the millennium, in which a woman tries to orchestrate her own extinction—from "one of the most gifted novelists of his generation" (TIME). “Lyrical and obscene, colloquial and rhapsodic." —The New York Times First published in 1989, London Fields is set ten years into a dark future, against a backdrop of environmental and social decay and the looming threat of global cataclysm. As the dreaded Y2K approaches, Nicola Six, a “black hole” of sex and self-loathing, has chosen her thirty-fifth birthday, November 5, 1999, as the date of her own murder. Whom to manipulate into killing her is the question; her choice wavers between violent lowlife Keith Talent, who is obsessed with winning a darts tournament, and a dimly romantic banker named Guy Clinch. When Samson Young—a writer suffering from a long bout of writer’s block—stumbles upon these three, he believes he has found a story that will write itself. A highly unusual mystery with an unexpected twist at the end, London Fields is also a corrosively funny narrative of pyrotechnic complexity and scalding moral vision.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Whispering Windows: Tales of the Waterside In a minor street of this district stood once a small shop with dim, reticent Windows. Through these dusty Windows sniggering boys would peer, and would nudge one another with furtive comment. The stock, dusty as the Windows, seemed to have been thrown together by disdainful hands. There were faded photographs of monster-limbed ac tresses, in tights; a few books in paper covers, with titles matching the maladroit archness of the photo graphs; some bottles of scent With variegated labels; and little packets of toilet accessories. The ill-in formed might have assumed, from the style and con dition of the display, that the owner was letting his business run to ruin; While, in fact, he was doing very well. The goods in his Window were not ex posed for sale; they were a nod and a wink to the knowing ones that he had other tricks up his sleeve. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scribes and Pharisees: A Story of Literary London 'She's a mystery.' 'Well, at any rate, Teddy is infatuated-terribly infatuated.' 'And he knows absolutely nothing of her - of her right name, of where she lives, or of who she really is. He says he does; but I know better, my dear fellow. I've got my suspicions.' 'Suspicions of what?' Bertram Rosmead, the indolent student, who had thus expressed doubt, smiled mysteriously. He had flung himself upon the frayed and faded couch at the open window of the airy, high-up old room on the Quai Montebello, and was lying with his hands lazily clasped behind his head and a caporal in his mouth, in an attitude of idle contentment. The rose and orange of the afterglow had faded. The roar of Paris came up from the streets below, and as he gazed dreamily across the placid river where beyond showed against the clear evening sky the twin time-worn towers of Notre Dame, the thin gilt spire of the Hotel de Ville, and the ancient gothic tower of St. Jacques, he pondered deeply. The day was over; the Paris of Pleasure was lighting up, beginning its night of wild delight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea

Download or read book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea written by O. H. Peters and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter.
