Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the history of the London black music culture that emerged in post-colonial London at the end of the twentieth century; the people who made it, the racial and spatial politics of its development and change, and the part it played in founding London's precious, embattled multiculture. It conceives of the linked scenes around black music in London, from ska, reggae and soul in the 1970s, to rare groove and rave in the 1980s and jungle and its offshoots in the 1990s, to dubstep and grime of the 2000s, as demonstrating enough common features to be thought of as one musical culture, an Afro-diasporic continuum. Core to this idea is that this dance culture has been ignored in history and cultural theory and that it should be thought of as a powerful and internationally significant form of popular art.

Book Imaginative Management Control

Download or read book Imaginative Management Control written by Ronald Ogden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1970. Drawing on his knowledge of business methods in Europe, America and Asia, Ronald Ogden examines the necessity for control in a business and the ways in which it should be exercised in order to obtain the most effective and profitable results. He shows that control can be exercised through carefully planned objectives which must, in their turn, be broken down into clearly defined targets. Realistic planning is discussed, and the author considers the effective implementation of plans by means of various techniques such as budgeting, costing, staff control, operational research, and network planning. The study will be of interest not only to managers but also to students of management concerned with modern business techniques and with the functions and responsibilities of management and control.

Book The Race to the North

Download or read book The Race to the North written by David Wragg and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-01-21 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth century, some of Britains leading main-line railway companies threw caution to the winds in an attempt to provide the fastest passenger express services between London and Scotland. These became known as the races to the north. There were two phases, in 1888 and 1895, and they spurred the building of new bridges across the Firth of Forth and Firth of Tay.David Wraggs gripping, detailed narrative tells the story of this epic engineering and commercial competition. He concentrates on the determination of the railway companies to see who could provide the fastest schedule between London and the main Scottish cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth, Dundee and Aberdeen.Casting aside their early policy of co-existence on these prestigious and lucrative routes, the West Coast and East Coast companies were drawn into a period of intense, highly publicized rivalry as they sought to dominate the market. David Wragg gives an insight into the conduct of the well-publicized highs and tragic lows of this dramatic story the extension of the lines to the far north, the building of the Tay and Forth bridges including the collapse of the first Tay bridge with 72 fatalities and the repeated bids by the companies to cut the journey times. While he describes the public side of this fascinating story, David Wragg fills in the background, which is no less interesting the pioneering engineering of the steam age, the massive construction projects, the cut-throat battle for passengers and freight and the deep inter-company rivalries that drove the rapid development of the railways during the Victorian period.

Book Male Suicide and Masculinity in 19th century Britain

Download or read book Male Suicide and Masculinity in 19th century Britain written by Lyndsay Galpin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-04-07 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how interpretations of suicidal motives were guided by gendered expectations of behaviour, and that these expectations were constructed to create meaning and understanding for family, friends and witnesses. Providing an insight into how people of this era understood suicidal behaviour and motives, it challenges the assertion that suicide was seen as a distinctly feminine act, and that men who took their own lives were feminized as a result. Instead, it shows that masculinity was understood in a more nuanced way than gender binaries allow, and that a man's masculinity was measured against other men. Focusing on four common narrative types; the love-suicide, the unemployed suicide, the suicide of the fraudster or speculator, and the suicide of the dishonoured solider, it provides historical context to modern discussions about the crisis of masculinity and rising male suicide rates. It reveals that narratives around male suicides are not so different today as they were then, and that our modern model of masculinity can be traced back to the 19th century.
