This book was released on 2017-01-21 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London Government Under the Local Government Act, 1888 It will not merely absorb the functions of county authorities, but will succeed to all the powers, duties, and liabilities of the Metropolitan Board of Works. That board came into existence on January 1, 1856, and it will pass away on April 1, 1889, having had a life of thirty-three years and three months. During that period it has exercised an enormous influence upon the municipal aflairs of London. It has constructed a main drainage system at a cost of more than six millions and a half: embanked the Thames: freed most of the bridges from toll: constructed vast arteries of street communication: established and maintained a metropolitan fire brigade: provided and maintained 2603 acres of parks and open spaces free to the public for ever: exercised a controlling jurisdiction over the half-million buildings of London cleared vast insanitary areas: and in many other ways discharged under more than 120 Acts of Parliament important municipal functions in London. The transfer by a single clause in an Act of Parliament of the powers, duties, and liabilities of an Authority of this kind to a directly elected municipality, is an operation the boldness of which is not less striking than its magnitude. Book No Room to Live

Download or read book No Room to Live written by George Haw and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from No Room to Live: The Plaint of Overcrowded London There is no problem that presses more for a solution than that of the housing and the overcrowding of London, and there is hardly any question of the day which is at the present moment receiving more attention, or is more frequently the subject of discussion and newspaper correspondence and leading articles. Yet there had been no serious attempt to ascertain the plain facts of the case until Mr. George Haw undertook the investigation which has led to the following pages. The book is not only opportune in its appearance, but it wall have to be consulted and quoted by anyone who speaks or writes upon the question. The facts are startling. They go far beyond the current belief and opinion upon the evil. I have no doubt that the book will prove of immense value when legislation is attempted seriously, and with recognition first of the extent of the truth, and next of the certain consequences of neglecting an evil which is daily assuming more formidable proportions, to the lasting injury of the physique, the morals, and the standards of young people numbered by the hundred thousand. Book The Governance of London

Download or read book The Governance of London written by George Laurence Gomme and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Governance of London: Studies on the Place Occupied by London in English Institutions In this book I have presented an anthropologist's view of London history. History to be of value must concern itself with something definite, and the something definite on which it appears to me to have been worth writing is the position of London as an English institution. Anthropologists know that institutions of quite unequal development do not coalesce, and the difficulty in the way of a Romanised Britain has always been that both tribal Celt and tribal Teuton stood in the way. The book, I hope, shows this difficulty, which was a very real one to our ancestors, to be an historical episode of very considerable importance in the evolution of the English, state. Whether I have successfully solved it is another question. Perhaps anthropologists may question my right to apply their science and their principles to so purely a historical subject, and may dispute my conclusions as unscientific from that point of view.
