Download or read book Old Haunts a London City Novel written by Emmett Spain and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working as a spirit talker is as dangerous as it is underpaid...and that is just the start of Jack Worthington's problems in the urban fantasy, Old Haunts. Jack is behind on the rent, terminally single, and is greeted every morning by the ghost of an eighty-year-old woman with a bad memory. But things are about to get worse. In saving the life of a client, Jack is forced to break one of the fundamental laws of existence, a crime that carries with it the punishment of death. Knowing that his days--or hours--are numbered, he races to forestall his inevitable death sentence, but in his travels unwittingly stumbles upon a potential catastrophe in the making. Now he has to figure out why the ghosts of London City are sowing fear and paranoia into the minds of police and ordinary citizens, and what it all has to do with the anniversary of the infamous citywide riots that occurred one year ago to the day. His search eventually leads him to a haven for the city's underworld denizens, where he must face a vampire with whom he shares a terrible link to the past, all while trying to stay alive just long enough to avert the apocalypse. Some days saving the world kinda sucks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London: City of the Dead is a groundbreaking account of London's dealing with death, covering the afterlife, execution, bodysnatching, murder, fatal disease, spiritualism, bizarre deaths and cemeteries. Taking the reader from Roman London to the 'glorious dead' of the First World War, this is the first systematic look at London's culture of death, with analysis of its customs and superstitions, rituals and representations. The authors of the celebrated London: The Executioner's City (Sutton, 2006) weave their way through the streets of London once again, this time combining some of the capital's most curious features, such as London's Necropolis Railway and Brookwood Cemetery, with the culture of death exposed in the works of great writers such as Dickens. The book captures for the first time a side of the city that has always been every bit as fascinating and colourful as other better known aspects of the metropolis. It shows London in all its moods - serious, comic, tragic and heroic-and celebrates its robust acceptance of the only certainty in life.

Book The Four Left Handed Maidens and the Highwayman of London City in 1799

Download or read book The Four Left Handed Maidens and the Highwayman of London City in 1799 written by Ned Byrne and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-01-09 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2006 a bundle of hand written pages were discovered buried in a garden in the outskirts of Cullybackey near Ballymena, County Antrim. They had been penned by Charles Kinhilt a lawyer from Cullybackey, County Antrim. They had been sealed in sacking and placed in a wooden box which had been covered in what appeared to be bitumen. The contents revealed the journal of one Brock Adair outlining his investigations into crime in County Antrim and indeed the whole of the island of Ireland in the late 1700s and into the 1800s. Further reading revealed a lady called Kitty Bradshaw Brennan from Wicklow who is believed to be Irelands first female investigator although this is not a proven fact .She and Brock conducted many successful enquiries together.

  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book London written by Phil Baker and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2021-05-26 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: City of cities, the modern world’s first great metropolis, London has shaped everything from clothing to youth culture. It has a unique place in the world’s memory, even as its role has changed from the capital of the planet to its playground, and as its lived history has mutated into the heritage industry. In this book, Londoner Phil Baker explores the city’s history and the London of today, balancing well-known major events with more curious and eccentric details. He reveals a city of almost unmatched historical density and richness. For Baker, London turns out to be Gothic in all senses of the word and enjoyably haunted by its own often bloody past. And despite extensive redevelopment, as he shows in this engaging and insightful book, some of the magic remains.
