Book excerpt: Excerpt from London as Seen and Described by Famous Writers In this work, which is a compilation of views and impressions of the British metropolis, I have followed, in some measure, the plan of my former book on Paris in selecting from a vast number of works descriptions of such external characteristics of the city as are recorded by travellers and famous native and foreign writers. In Paris, the selections, as a rule, are devoted to special monuments, while in this book they deal largely with general impressions of various sections of the great city. However, there will be found descriptions of many of the chief monuments, the streets, the squares, the parks, the old churches and civic buildings with associations, besides much interesting historical matter; but I have almost entirely neglected including articles on the London of the past and have restricted myself to the London of the Nineteenth Century. Comparatively few of those who are ready to admit the greatness of London and to whom the name alone suggests a wealth of romantic and historical interest, realize that the marvellous city on the Thames has special charms beneath its canopy of smoke and fog for the artist and lover of the picturesque. This quality has been insisted upon in the following pages, wherein much space has been given to the river, the docks and out-of-the-way nooks and corners that have aroused the enthusiastic admiration of many writers. The London fog, which is so much abused, as a rule, has its apologist and eulogist here. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Venice as Seen and Described by Famous Writers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Venice as Seen and Described by Famous Writers Classic Reprint written by Esther Singleton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venice as Seen and Described by Famous Writers As in my similar books on London and Paris, I have fol lowed a general plan of topographical arrangement. There fore, we begin with a general View of the Lagoons and the Outer Rim from which we catch a distant glimpse of Venice. We then enter a gondola and float along the Grand Canal with Gautier to point out its array of palaces and monuments of fame, beauty and historical interest, pausing to learn from Molmenti of the luxurious interiors of the Patri cian's Palaces in their prime. Santa Maria della Salute, The Rialto, the Ca' d'oro and the Fondachi claim our attention until we land and ascend the Campanile, with Henry Havard to aid us in recognising the chief buildings at our feet and the misty blue mountain peaks in the far distance. After this bird's-eye view of luminous Venice, framed by her lagoons, we enter St. Mark's to study its architecture, sculptures and mosaics, and next stop to enjoy the Piazza and learn the sig nificance of its famous columns. The Ducal Palace then claims our interest, without and within. Our travels through the city are now interrupted by the examination of some mas terpieces of Venetian painting, described by Taine; after which, we again enter our gondola to visit some of the churches of especial note, wells and squares, and side-canals, which happily for us are not yet filled up. We enjoy a few afternoon excursions to islands from Chioggia on the south to Torcello on the north, - and thus our visit ends. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London Venture Book I have assumed a name by Which they may refer to me (ii ever he or she may Wish to do' so kindly) in the same manner at least twice running - a feat of pronunciation Which few of my English acquaintances have performed with my natal name. But there is also another reason, considerate of the author. I have been told that there are writers whose works would have been famous if only their names could have been familiarly pronounced - Polish and Russian writers for the most part, I gather. Since I had already taken every other precaution but this to deserve their more fortunate fate, in changing my name I have, I hope, robbed my readers of their last excuse for my obscurity. Book In Dickens s London Classic Reprint

Download or read book In Dickens s London Classic Reprint written by Francis Hopkinson Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Dickens's London AN apology for adding another page to the overwhelm ing mass of printed matter laudatory of the genius of Charles Dickens is perhaps necessary. Mine is personal. For a long time I have wished to discharge something of the obligation I have always owed him for the pleasure he has given me. And since in my searches about London I have found how little is left of what was made famous by his pen, another wish has grown that of recording, before it is too late, the aspect of some of the few remaining inns, bridges, streets, courts, and houses in which he and his characters played their parts. That their demolition is going steadily on was made apparent to me in the sum mer of 1912, when I was engaged in a hunt for similar relics identified with the pen of Mr. Thackeray. And as these two great writers were contemporaries, my eager footsteps covered much of the ground they utilised in common. That I may have reproduced nothing unknown to the lovers of Mr. Dickens is true; nor have I made record of everything that is left, much of it lying outside the range of my medium, a charcoal demanding above all else the quality of the picturesque. Then, again, London is far too big, and Mr. Dickens's pen was far too fertile for any one man to crowd into a single volume a tenth of its area or a tithe of his characters and their haunts.
