Book Deterritorialized Youth

Download or read book Deterritorialized Youth written by Dawn Chatty and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sahrawi and Afghan refugee youth in the Middle East have been stereotyped regionally and internationally: some have been objectified as passive victims; others have become the beneficiaries of numerous humanitarian aid packages which presume the primacy of the Western model of child development. This book compares and contrasts both the stereotypes and Western-based models of humanitarian assistance among Sahrawi youth with the lack of programming and near total self-sufficiency of Afghan refugee youth in Iran. Both extremes offer an important opportunity to further explore the impact which forced migration and prolonged conflict have had, and continue to have, on the lives of these refugee youth and their families. This study examines refugee communities closely linked with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and a host of other UN agencies in the case of the Sahrawi and near total lack of humanitarian aid in the case of Afghan refugees in Iran.

Besides, custom dictates that eighteen friends attend her for a special ceremony on her birthday, and Lucia only has one friend– Esmé Mares. They've stuck to each other's side all throughout high school, content to be friends with only each other. At least, Lucia thought they were content. As it turns out, Esmé wants something different out of her senior year. And, on top of that, Lucia's mom has planned a debutante ball for her birthday behind her back. She'll be forced to cobble together a court of eighteen “friends” before her beloved lola arrives from the Philippines for this blessed occasion. How far will Lucia stray from her comfort zone in order to play the role of dutiful daughter and granddaughter? Will she do the unthinkable– participating in a school sponsored activity? Will she discover that her sense of humor can be a way to connect with people, not just push them away?

Nestled in a picturesque corner of southern Australia, the Valley View Motel has been run by the Quinlans for years—and nobody adores the place more than Lola, the family’s lovable and mischievous Irish-born matriarch. So when she insists that her relatives spend their Christmas elsewhere, the close-knit bunch can’t help but be a bit curious. Lola has always had a knack for clever schemes; after all, she once slyly reunited her three feuding granddaughters, whom she nicknamed the Alphabet Sisters. And with the holiday season fast approaching, Lola decides it’s time to stir up some extra excitement. Plotting in secret and online, Lola thinks it would be fun to invite a select group of strangers to stay at the motel for Christmas. Will these guests become friends, ignite sparks, fall in love? As she counts down the days until their arrival, Lola’s own family dramas threaten to upend her best-laid plans. Yet amid moments of humor, heartache, and unexpected twists of fate, Lola finds that she’s the one who’s in for the biggest surprise of all. “[Monica] McInerney’s assured writing sparkles. . . . Book Bitter Oranges

    Book Details:
  • Author : D. Patrick Georges
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2009-07-06

Download or read book Bitter Oranges written by D. Patrick Georges and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-07-06 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many men dream of living out their James Bond fantasy, the screen version: exotic travel, adventure, hot women, and icy martinis shaken not stirred. Reality proves different when an innocent quest for a simpler, more spiritual life turns into a nightmare as two seekers, ordinary Americans, stumble across the path of the covert operations of two world powers and become unwilling spies. This book takes the reader from where the author’s previous book Smarter than Snakes left off. Accused by the woman he loves of using and betraying her and haunted by secret agents of the shadow government, the damned hero of the story seeks sanctuary off the gringo trail in Saudi Arabia. There, under the guidance of a top American lobbyist working for a Saudi billionaire, he assesses his options and opts to move to Greece under an assumed name. Thinking he is safe from the murderous secret agents of the shadow government that operates under the façade of democracy, equality, human rights and other myths, he resumes his quest for a more spiritual life that leads only to wild goose chases. He finds comfort in the arms of a woman whom he considers the true love of his life, but his world comes crashing down when secret agents of this shadow government mistakenly assassinate her instead of him. Crushed and guilt-ridden, he seeks the help of the powerful American lobbyist who helped him in Saudi Arabia. Thanks to his extensive list of contacts, the lobbyist facilitates the protagonist’s escape to a remote island, an Eden-like setting but without fickle Eves and venomous Serpents. The cold, hard facts to back up the truths that hold this work together and the lavish descriptions of the hero’s experience of such spectacular events as hitching a ride on a billionaire’s floating palace, staying at the first seven-star all-suite hotel, flying on the Concorde, touring Greek locations and attending unusual ceremonies and rites in Scotland, Spanish Africa and Papua New Guinea, make for a rich, riveting story that holds one's interest through to the very end. NOTE: This book contains strong intellectual material that may be disturbing to some religious believers. Reader discretion is advised.
