  • Author : Holger Briel

Download or read book The Piracy Years written by Holger Briel and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Piracy Years: Internet File Sharing in a Global Context is the first collection to provide an overview of digital piracy’s recent past and its potential futures. Combining research essays, interviews, and overviews, the volume brings together leading scholars and infamous digital pirates from China, Germany, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In June 1999, the peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing website Napster transformed the availability of online content, but the site was quickly sued into oblivion. Despite the highly publicised shutdowns of a number of P2P websites, many continue to thrive, and digital piracy has become a global phenomenon. This book argues that any future media theory and research will have to contend with such web practices remaining an integral and politically formative part of the Internet. Offline and online piracies thrive on technological affordances in opposition to corporate efforts – in music, film, publishing, and academia – to label them as threatening to the economy and society. Therefore, this book explores piracy as a phenomenon navigating the conventions, norms, and boundaries of legality in digital cultures. Pirate networked sociabilities work within and outside the fringes of market economy through the lens of institutional and discursive power. By creating new ways that keep society moving and from stagnation, they ensure its continued existence - including the survival of the very areas they attack. The Piracy Years is an essential resource for researchers, post-graduate students, and anyone interested in the global spread and ever-increasing importance of digital piracy.

Book Virgin Martyrs

Download or read book Virgin Martyrs written by Karen A. Winstead and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories of the torture and execution of beautiful Christian women first appeared in late antiquity and proliferated during the early Middle Ages. A thousand years later, virgin martyrs were still the most popular female saints. Their legends, in countless retellings through the centuries, preserved a standard plot—the heroine resists a pagan suitor, endures cruelties inflicted by her rejected lover or outraged family, works miracles, and dies for Christ. That sequence was embellished by incidents emblematic of the specific saint: Juliana's battle with the devil, Barbara's immurement in the tower, Katherine's encounter with spiked wheels. Karen A. Winstead examines this seemingly static story form and discovers subtle shifts in the representation of the virgin martyrs, as their legends were adapted for changing audiences in late medieval England.

Book Cardiovascular Drug Therapy in the Elderly

Download or read book Cardiovascular Drug Therapy in the Elderly written by Adam Schneeweiss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiovascular drug therapy has markedly progressed in the recent decades. Not only have new drugs been introduced to clinical practice, but new classes of drugs have been developed. While in 1960 the practicing cardiolo gist had a selection of about only ten drugs, in 1987 about 150 drugs are routinely used in cardiovascular diseases. Elderly patients, however, usually do not enjoy the full benefit of this progress. This might be due to lack of knowledge, a conservative approach, or the worldwide tendency not to try new drugs in the elderly. It is now clear that the majority of patients that will be treated in car diovascular clinics will be, in the near future, elderly patients. Even now, elderly patients form about one-third of the patients with cardiovascular diseases. These patients are approached, however, according to criteria devel oped for younger populations. This is despite the fact that elderly patients differ from younger ones in most aspects, including pathology, epidemiol ogy, pathophysiology, diagnostic approach, management, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, rehabilitation, and supportive treatment. It is the purpose of this book to present to the clinician all drugs with which there is clinical experience in the elderly or which might be potentially useful for the elderly with cardiovascular diseases. The data are presented without the authors taking a position. This should allow the clinicians to make their own selection and individualize treatment, vii viii Preface based on a wide data base. Comparative data are presented only when specific comparative studies were performed.

Book Management of Hypertension

Download or read book Management of Hypertension written by Vasilios Papademetriou and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-19 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a valuable tool to assist both cardiovascular physicians and scientists learning the intricacies of hypertension research and its milestone studies. All major hypertension trials have been reviewed in this book in chronological order with extensive discussion of the study population, study design, and outcomes and with a special focus on what knowledge they offered, their strengths and weaknesses, statistical errors, impact on international guidelines and unmet needs. Importantly, the book also offers physicians and young scientists with basic knowledge regarding medical biostatistics. It is of critical importance for a scientist involved in the field to understand deeply the process of analyzing medical data. Moreover, the accurate interpretation of the results is central for applying evidence-based medicine in everyday clinical practice. Management of Hypertension: Current Practice and the Application of Landmark Trials is a critical tool to assist in the education of physicians and researchers in the field, providing a separate section on pioneer researchers in hypertension and urging readers to become bright exemplars for scientists wishing to pursue a career in academic medicine and hypertension research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary mission of the medical school is to create new doctors. Once the medical student has received his or her doctorate, the medical school's interest in, and acceptance of, responsibility for the continued professional development of the physician ceases almost entirely. Yet, with scientific advances in medicine increasing exponentially and the inevitable erosion of memory with time, teachings from our schools of medicine become increasingly irrelevant, forgotten, or both. To maintain competence, the physician must continuously re-educate him- or herself. CME-Continuing Medical Education-will probably never attain the status of the medical school's degree-granting undergraduate program, but medical schools and their faculties must recognize their responsibility, not creating competent physicians but also for maintaining that com only for petence. is the product of a Continuing Medical Education program This volume initiated by the Department of Anesthesiology at the Albert Einstein Col lege of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center. Our Department of Anes thesiology has historically been, and continues to be, unusually active in post-doctoral education through regional and national conferences and symposia. We recognized, however, that programs that bring physicians together in one location for a limited menu of lectures, questions, and discussion reach only a fraction of the potential audience of anesthesiolo gists. Such programs, as valuable as they are, by their very structure exclude more anesthesiologists than they include.
