This project has raised an awareness and understanding of the cultural heritage and legacy of diverse Muslim communities living in the West Midlands. A great cultural heritage influx from east to west and west to east is emerging from indigenous Muslim cultural heritage. The organisation has worked with a number of Muslim communities in the West Midlands by holding heritage training workshops, and by carrying out training to collect the primary source materials such as photographs, artefacts and stories, which have been used in this publication, a website and CD ROM. The culmination of the project is the Lok Virsa book which encompasses all the information and illustrations obtained during the project from the diverse Muslim communities now established in the West Midlands.

Book Politics of the Past

Download or read book Politics of the Past written by David Cowan and published by . This book was released on 2024-04-03 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inter-war period (1918-1939) is still remembered as a period of mass deprivation - the 'hungry thirties'. But how did this impression emerge? Thousands of conversations about life in the inter-war period - between parents and children around the dinner table; among workmates at the pub - shaped these understandings. In turn, these fed into popular politics. Stories about the embryonic welfare system in the early-twentieth century informed how people felt towards the National Health Service; memories of the Great Depression shaped arguments about state intervention in the economy. Challenging accounts of widespread political disengagement in the twentieth century, Politics of the Past shows how re-telling family stories about the inter-war period offered ordinary people an accessible way of engaging in politics. Drawing on six local case studies across Scotland and England, this book explains how stories about the inter-war working-class experience in industrial areas came to appear commonplace nationwide.

Positioned between India, Pakistan and China – three nuclear powers – Kashmir is the most militarized zone on the planet. Against this backdrop, the urgency to understand what Jammu and Kashmir means to those who actually belong to its territory has increased. This book not only helps readers navigate subtleties in a complex part of the world but is the first of its kind – written for a global audience from local perspectives, which to date have been sorely lacking.

Book New Directions in Local History Since Hoskins

Download or read book New Directions in Local History Since Hoskins written by Christopher Dyer and published by Univ of Hertfordshire Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local history in Britain can trace its origins back to the sixteenth century and before, but it was given inspiration and a new sense of direction in the 1950s and 60s by the work of W.G. Hoskins. This book marks the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of his Local history in England which was designed to help people researching the history of their own villages and towns. It is the result of a collaboration between academic historians in the Centre for English Local History at the University of Leicester, which Hoskins founded, and the British Association for Local History, an organisation that brings together the thousands of people who are not professional academics but who practise local history. Taking the work of Hoskins as a starting point, the contributors show how local history is being researched and written today. Fifteen historians write about a variety of local history subjects which are significant in their own right but which also point to current trends in the subject. They show how local historians use their sources systematically, from the non-verbal evidence of buildings to various types of electronic resources. All periods between the middle ages and the early twenty-first century are explored, as are many different parts of the country from Skye to the Kent coast. There are examples of local historians working on ethnic minorities, gender and the working class. Those who study localities use a variety of approaches, including those of social, economic, religious, legal, intellectual and cultural history, all of which are employed here. They are aware of the roots of their subject and examine the history of local history itself. Together, the editors and authors raise the various dilemmas which stimulate debates among local historians about the nature of the subject, its present health and the directions it will take in the next half century.

Book excerpt: Taboo! is a journey of discovery into a famous red light district of Lahore, Pakistan, known as Shahi Mohalla, the Royal Bazaar, or Heera Mandi, the market of diamonds. The phenomenon of prostitution coupled with music and dance performances has ancient roots in South Asia. Regardless of the stigma attached to the prostitution, it has given birth for centuries to many well-known performing artists. The book captures a more realistic picture of the phenomenon through the stories of the people living there: the musicians, the prostitutes and their pimps, managers and customers. These people are struggling to make a living by following ancient traditions, yet not knowing clearly where they fit in the larger picture of present day society. Taboo! helps eradicate a blind spot in our understanding of the power relations associated with gender roles throughout our society.

Book Muslim Devotional Art in India

Download or read book Muslim Devotional Art in India written by Yousuf Saeed and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the history of Islamic popular devotional art and visual culture in 20th-century India, weaving the personal narrative of the author’s journey through his understanding of the faith. It begins with an introductory exploration of how the basic and universal image of Mecca and Medina may have been imported into Indian popular print culture and what variants it resulted in here. Besides providing a historical context of the pre-print culture of popular Muslim visuality, the book also explores the impact the 1947 Partition of India may have made on the calendar art in South Asia. A significant portion of the book focuses on the contemporary prints of different localised images found in India and what role these play in the users’ lives, especially in the augmentation of their popular faith and cultural practices. The volume also compares the images published in India with some of those available in Pakistan to reflect different socio-political trajectories. Finally, it discusses why such a vibrant visual culture continues to thrive among South Asian Muslims despite the questions raised by the orthodoxy on its legitimacy in Islam, and why images and popular visual cultures are inevitable for popular piety despite the orthodox Muslims’ increasing dissociation from them. This work is one of the first books on Indian Muslim poster art, with rare images and simple narratives, anecdotes about rituals, ceremonies and cultural traditions running parallel to research findings. This second edition contains a new Afterword that discusses challenges to religious plurality arising on account of changing political landscapes, economic liberalisation, technology and new media, and socio-religious developments. It will appeal to the lay reader as well as the specialist and will be especially useful to researchers and scholars in popular culture, media and cultural studies, visual art and performance studies, and sociology and social anthropology.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is a compilation of selected papers presented at the Third International Hindu Kush Cultural Conference held in Chitral town from 26-30 August 1995. The conference was multi-disciplinary, aiming at increasing communication not only among local and international scholars, but also among academic disciplines. The volume emphasizes the geo-political as well as socio-cultural importance of the region and contains valuable recommendations for the future development of the region. The volume focuses on themes such as environmental problems and the need to conserve forests and soil erosion. The potential negative environmental and cultural consequences of development projects have also been discussed, and there are recommendations for development agencies to incorporate a cultural and environmental sensitivity component into their planning process. The volume will help to increase awareness of the fact that the natural/physical environments and cultural environments are intimately related. When the natural environment is degraded, the cultural environment is endangered.
