Book excerpt: It is the intent of this text to allow a more in-depth study to be made by the student of Greek history by having the essential data more readily available in this spreadsheet format. The pursuit of one's objective can be much more easily and quickly carried out if the student's train of thought can be maintained until the time that his final conclusions can be reached. The intent is not to give a thoroughly complete encyclopedic source of information about Greek history as that type of data is readily available in any public library. Once the names of the character, his point of fame, his family relationships and his place of birth, etc. are known, it will be much easier to find source material from virtually hundreds, if not thousands, of texts that have a treasure-trove of information that is not always being used because of the complexity involved in finding it. What this writer is doing in this text is giving the reader an introduction to the important characters of Greek history in much the same way we find out about a person we might meet at a party, exchanging general personal information like, "What Do You Do For a Living?" or "Are You Married?" and so forth. In addition, he has taken the liberty to assess the relative importance of each notable ancient Greek so that the reader's effort might be spent in a more beneficial way. Latitude has been left for some healthy controversy. Since Heinrich Schliemann discovered the site of ancient Troy, the academic community has taken criticism for their doubting of the factual nature of ancient Greek history. That has gone too far. The last century and a quarter has proven that the modern archaeologist is up to the task, giving open and accurate analysis of the finds that they have made without regards to pressure to misrepresent data so preconceived theories can be allowed to stand. What distinguishes this book is the way in which Lauren Swayne Barthold argues for a dialectic central to Gadamer's hermeneutics, one that recalls the Platonic chorismos, or separation, between the transcendent and sensory realms. Barthold demonstrates that Gadamer, too, insisted on the "in-between" nature of human understanding as characterized by Hermes: we are finite beings always striving for infinity--that which lies beyond being. Such a dialectical reading brings clarity to several themes crucial to, and contested within, Gadamer's hermeneutics. First, we are helped to see that Gadamer affirms the roles of both theory and practice for hermeneutics. Second, we are able to appreciate the nature of truth as the event of understanding--that into which we enter as opposed to that which stands apart from us as a criterion. Third, we gain insight into the significance of dialogue for understanding, including the necessary role of the other. Gadamer's Dialectical Hermeneutics presents a reading of Gadamer that avoids the labels of realism or essentialism, and shows his primary motivation is to uncover the ethical, indeed dialectically ethical, and practical nature of philosophy.

Welch begins by changing the current view of classical rhetoric by reinterpreting the existing texts into fluid language contexts -- a change that requires relinquishing the formulaic tradition, acquiring an awareness of translation issues, and constructing a classical rhetoric beginning with the Fifth Century B.C. She continues with a discussion of the adaptability of this material to new language situations, including political, cultural, and linguistic change, providing it with much of its power as well as its longevity. The book concludes that classical rhetoric can readily address any situation since it focuses not only on critical stances toward discourse that already exists, but also presents elaborate theories for the production of new discourse.

Book excerpt: Recently, in the past thirty years, there has been an upsurge in serious treatment of Platonic mythoi, which were once thought to be only literary decoration and/or the simplistic presentation of philosophic conclusions for the demos (dummies in effect). Nevertheless, the dominant tendency in the exegesis of Platonic mythoi still is to subordinate them to philosophic logos (reason) and not to recognize that such mythoi are philosophic in themselves in the broad sense of “the love of wisdom”. There is something conversional about Plato’s philosophic mythos, reformulating and superseding traditional Greek mythos and then charting the drama of the human soul from Socratic aporia, up and out of the cave, and into the beyond, the Idea of the Good. The late Professor Eric Voegelin understood this existential drama, and his exegesis of Platonic mythos, from engendering pathos to symbols, is revelatory to say the least. My understanding is that logos (reason) is a fundamental and necessary check on mythos, but logos and mythos are complementary via medias; neither are dispensable nor reducible, one to the other. Also crucial to my study of Platonic mythoi is the “analogy of being,” that Voegelin only touches on, but Erich Przywara explores and develops. The relationship between the human and the divine is analogical (likenesses but also significant unlikenesses), and Plato certainly explored the play of opposites and affinities covering the difficult philosophical problems of becoming and being and the temporal and the eternal. Most philosophic commentators on Plato ignore the suffusive presence of the divine in Plato’s love of wisdom. Perhaps only Platonic mythos at its best offers the philosophic imagination the vision of transcendence.
