The turnover of the online grocery market in Germany in 2015 increased by 19 percent compared to 2014, reaching EUR 736 million. Nevertheless, online grocery providers are struggling due to the logistical and operational challenges of last-mile distribution - in particular, because the German customer is very hesitant to order food online. Therefore, online grocery providers are trying different approaches, varying from delivery services and drivein supermarkets to refrigerated pickup stations, in order find out which service is economically efficient and meets customer demand. This study uses the data from a self-conducted survey of 205 internet users and analyzes potential target groups and the respondents' willingness to use online grocery, with the focus on delivery services and refrigerated pickup stations. The research techniques applied for the analysis of the findings compromise descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and logistic regression analyses. The findings indicate a generally positive attitude towards online grocery. Nevertheless, the majority will keep on shopping for groceries in the traditional way, but online grocery can be used as an additional service for the customer. Furthermore, the findings demonstrate that a delivery service is the preferred service compared to pickup stations. Consequently, the results suggest that online grocery will be of importance in the near future and can be used by traditional stakeholders in the food sector to gain a competitive advantage in a highly contested market, especially by integrating pickup stations into the existing delivery service infrastructure in order to provide customers with a unique service.

Category Management is a retail industry initiative that was introduced, by Marketing professionals, as part the Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) initiative in the early 1990's. Category Management is defined as the distributor/supplier process of managing categories as strategic business units, producing enhanced business results by focusing on delivering consumer value (Blattberg & Fox, 1995). Some of the expected benefits of Category Management are improved responsiveness to consumer needs, better performing mix of products at the SKU level, improved merchandizing effectiveness through combined retailer and manufacturer knowledge, and achieving a more entrepreneurial approach by organizing categories as strategic business units. Somewhat independently, Operations Management professionals have sought to improve the performance of retailers through the application of supply chain management initiatives, with seemingly little overlap with Category Management efforts. Supply chain initiatives include measures such as strategic alliances and partnering with key suppliers, coordinated inventory management, vendor management inventory (VMI), and the use of electronic data interchange (EDI) technology, etc. In recent years, Marketing researchers have begun to study Category Management practices and their impact on retail industry performance. In supply chain research, however, to the best of our knowledge there have been no studies so far on the possible impact of Category Management on retail supply chains. Thus a major objective of this research is to close the gap and investigate retail industry performance in an integrated manner, synthesizing Marketing and Supply Chain Management research. Supply chains dealing with fast moving consumer goods face interesting challenges. They are known to be dynamic contexts, requiring fast response to changing tastes and buying habits of consumers, as well as supporting broad variety of end products. These supply chains are becoming more globally dispersed as well, introducing many operational challenges in maintaining high levels of responsiveness. This is also an important sector of the economy, both in terms of employment and impact on consumers. For these reasons, we believe that this sector merits more careful attention. In order to better understand the relationship between Category Management and Supply Chain Integration, a theoretical model is developed linking the two, along with the global structural characteristics of FMCG supply chains, controlling for product and market characteristics. The supply chain management practices construct is defined as comprising strategic-level initiatives such as establishment of strategic supplier partnerships, integration intensity, information sharing, information quality, etc. The complexity of the supply chain structure is defined in terms of the horizontal structure, vertical structure, horizontal position, and a new construct termed as global dispersion. The construct Category Management practices is defined to include intensity of CM efforts, category captain resources, retailer category resources and category plan implementation. This is generally consistent with early Marketing research such as Gooner (2001). This covers activities such as the intensity of merchandising activities as well as the merchandizing resources (consumer information, promotional budgets, etc.) contributed by both suppliers and the retailer. These variables are chosen to represent the level of implementation of both Category Management and supply chain management initiatives among the trading partners. The dependent variables comprise retailer performance (defined as the combination of several retailer financial and market share performance measures), category captain performance, as well as supplier performance consisting of elements such as quality, cost, flexibility, delivery, and prompt response. The structural model developed suggests several testable hypotheses and relationships. The major hypotheses are that, first, increased adoption of category management elements may be positively related to supply chain performance. Second, increased adoption of the various supply chain management initiatives may also be positively related to supply chain performance, mediated by increased supplier partnering. This dissertation has several theoretical and managerial objectives. First, a theoretical model describing the relationship spanning two research streams in the operations management and marketing areas is developed. Second, this research empirically validates the theoretical model through survey research specifically in the FMCG sector. The FMCG sector is important to the US economy, but has received relatively insufficient attention. Third, this research may also offer practical guidance to retailers and suppliers within the FMCG sector for improving performance, with implications for both consumer satisfaction and increased firm performance. Logistics has been acknowledged as an important prerequisite and key component of retail internationalisation, enabling physical distribution to new foreign markets as well as ensuring customer satisfaction in terms of on-time delivery and product availability. Despite the recognition of logistics, logistics managers struggle to adapt their logistics organisation and operations in order to efficiently and effectively support retail internationalisation due to the complexity of operating in multiple markets. Previous research seldom mentions how logistics supports retail internationalisation, especially when retail chains are at the beginning of their retail-internationalisation journey. By exploring the supporting role of logistics during the early stage of retail internationalisation, retailers can better understand how logistics organisation and operations can be organised in order to successfully expand into foreign sales markets. Therefore, the purpose of this licentiate thesis is to: Explore the supporting role of logistics during the early stage of retail internationalisation. This licentiate thesis is based on an abductive, multiple-case-study approach that combines empirical data with literature in an iterative process in order to explore the supporting role of logistics during the early stage of retail internationalisation. The selected case companies were three large-sized Swedish retail chains that have recently established themselves into nearby foreign sales markets. The findings of this licentiate thesis suggest that logistics plays both a reactive and a proactive supporting role during the early stage of retail internationalisation. The reactive supporting role refers to logistics that adapts to predetermined conditions set by the retail company’s top management team. As a reactive supporter, the logistics organisation is typically involved at an operational level and scales up its logistics operations in order to supply multiple markets. Beyond its reactive role, logistics can also play a proactive supporting role. This refers to its involvement at a strategic level within the retail company where it can influence the conditions of retail internationalisation. When logistics is involved more proactively, its operations can become better aligned with the other company operations involved in retail internationalisation. Furthermore, proactive logistics support enables more efficient and effective logistics that can better cope with increased complexity as well as more effectively keeping track of logistics costs. In addition to these findings, the importance of top management has been identified as a key aspect of proactive logistics support. More specifically, logistics competence within the top management team enables logistics to be prioritised at a strategic level and to be better integrated during retail internationalisation, including during individual establishments into new markets. The findings also suggest that the importance of logistics increases over time during retail internationalisation. The more markets the retailer enters, the more important efficient logistics becomes in order to deal with both complexity and logistics costs. By involving proactive logistics from the start of retail internationalisation, retail chains can more efficiently and effectively establish into and operate within foreign sales markets, which in turn supports a sustainable retail internationalisation. One of the main academic contributions of this licentiate thesis has been to study logistics in the specific context of retail internationalisation, which has previously not been researched in any great detail. In addition, logistics has often been studied as a static aspect, but in this thesis it is studied from a dynamic perspective in order to understand how its supporting role changes over time during the early stage of retail internationalisation. Another important contribution is that the role of logistics has been studied from both a strategic and an operational level, as previous research has mostly focused on the strategic level of logistics related to retail internationalisation. In terms of practical contributions, this licentiate thesis clarifies the logistics characteristics and supply-chain capabilities that support the early stage of retail internationalisation. This licentiate thesis can also help practitioners to better prepare their logistics organisation and logistics operations for a future retail internationalisation, as well as helping them to avoid making logistical mistakes during the early stage of retail internationalisation.

The DET2009 conference continues to bring together International expertise from the academic and industrial fields, pushing forward the boundaries of research kno- edge and best practice in digital enterprise technology for design and manufacturing, and logistics and supply chain management. Over 120 papers from over 10 countries have been accepted for presentation at DET2009 and inclusion in this Proceedings volume after stringent refereeing process. On behalf of the organizing and program committees, the Editors are grateful to the many people who have made DET2009 possible: to the authors and presenters, es- cially the keynote speakers, to those who have diligently reviewed submissions, to members of International Scientific Committee, Organizing Committee and Advisory Committes, and to colleagues for their hard work in sorting out all the arrangements.
