Book excerpt: Little is known regarding predictive factors that contribute to adults successfully completing felony probation--particularly those who are granted early release. The current study attempts to fill this gap by analyzing data from a large, urban, community supervision and corrections department to examine what predictive factors--as identified by the Texas Risk Assessment System (TRAS) impact successful early release from adult felony probation. Results from multivariate logistic regression models revealed that the TRAS domains of criminal history and education/employment were significant predictors of early dismissal from felony community supervision as was the total TRAS risk score. Additionally, being male and Black significantly reduced the odds of early release from felony probation. The ability to capitalize on the areas leading to successful early release promotes greater efficacy in probation supervision strategies and alerts staff to areas where practitioners may have a direct effect on proper supervision techniques to enhance positive behavioral changes in the clients they serve.

Book excerpt: The criminal justice system has a long history of attempting to predict outcomes for several criminal justice decision points. Failure to appear in court is one such area of research. The current study compares the accuracy of deductive and inductive statistical models in predicting failure to appear in court. To evaluate this question, logistic regression was compared to random forests, support vector machines, and naïve Bayes models. The efficacy of a stacked ensemble model, a model developed from the predicted probabilities of the aforementioned individual models, was compared as well. Model accuracy assessment was determined using an identical holdout set of cases across all models. The results indicate that the random forest model outperforms logistic regression at both overall accuracy and a one percent false positive threshold. This adds to a growing body of literature that evaluates the efficacy of inductive models of prediction in criminal justice applications. Future research should continue to evaluate the efficacy of inductive and deductive statistical models in various criminal justice applications. Indeed, despite the performance of the random forest model presented here, many statistical models should be considered whenever any new prediction model is developed. Each model is developed in a unique way, with specific strengths and weaknesses, and only when several are considered is it possible to identify the best for a specific application. Since even modest increases in predictive accuracy can improve the efficiency and outcome of the criminal justice system, the search for the accurate prediction should continue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk assessment instruments play a significant role in correctional intervention and guide decisions about supervision and treatment. Although advances have been made in risk assessment over the past 50 years, limited attention has been given to risk assessment for domestic violence offenders. This study investigates the use of the Domestic Violence Screening Inventory (DVSI) and the Offender Screening Tool (OST) with a sample of 573 offenders convicted of domestic violence offenses and sentenced to supervised probation in Maricopa County, Arizona. The study has two purposes. The first is to assess the predictive validity of the existing assessment tools with a sample of domestic violence offenders, using a number of probation outcomes. The second is to identify the most significant predictors of probation outcomes. Predictive validity is assessed using crosstabulations, bivariate correlations, and the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve. Logistic regression is used to identify the most significant predictors of probation outcomes. The DVSI and the OST were found to be predictive of probation outcomes and were most predictive of the outcomes petition to revoke filed, petition to revoke filed for a violation of specialized domestic violence conditions, and unsuccessful probation status. Significant predictors include demographics, criminal history, current offense, victim characteristics, static factors, supervision variables and dynamic variables. The most consistent predictors were supervision variables and dynamic risk factors. The supervision variables include being supervised on a specialized domestic violence caseload and changes in supervision, either an increase or decrease, during the probation grant. The dynamic variables include employment and substance abuse. The overall findings provide support for the continued use of the DVSI and the OST and are consistent with the literature on evidence-based practices for correctional interventions. However, the predictive validity of the assessments varied across sub-groups and the instruments were less predictive for females and offenders with non-intimate partner victims. In addition, study variables only explained a small portion of the variation in the probation outcomes. Additional research is needed, expanding beyond the psychology of criminal conduct, to continue to improve existing risk assessment tools and identify more salient predictors of probation outcomes for domestic violence offenders.
