Download or read book Basic Simple Type Theory written by J. Roger Hindley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Type theory is one of the most important tools in the design of higher-level programming languages, such as ML. This book introduces and teaches its techniques by focusing on one particularly neat system and studying it in detail. By concentrating on the principles that make the theory work in practice, the author covers all the key ideas without getting involved in the complications of more advanced systems. This book takes a type-assignment approach to type theory, and the system considered is the simplest polymorphic one. The author covers all the basic ideas, including the system's relation to propositional logic, and gives a careful treatment of the type-checking algorithm that lies at the heart of every such system. Also featured are two other interesting algorithms that until now have been buried in inaccessible technical literature. The mathematical presentation is rigorous but clear, making it the first book at this level that can be used as an introduction to type theory for computer scientists.

Book Programming Languages and Systems

Download or read book Programming Languages and Systems written by David Schmidt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-02-27 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the 28 papers presented at ESOP 2004, the 13th European Symposium on Programming, which took place in Barcelona, Spain, March 29– 31, 2004. The ESOP series began in 1986 with the goal of bridging the gap between theory and practice, and the conferences continue to be devoted to explaining fundamental issues in the speci?cation, analysis, and implementation of programming languages and systems. The volume begins with a summary of an invited contribution by Peter O’Hearn, titledResources,ConcurrencyandLocalReasoning, andcontinueswith the 27 papers selected by the Program Committee from 118 submissions. Each submission was reviewed by at least three referees, and papers were selected during a ten-day electronic discussion phase. I would like to sincerely thank the members of the Program Committee, as well as their subreferees, for their diligent work; Torben Amtoft, for helping me collect the papers for the proceedings; and Tiziana Margaria, Bernhard Ste?en, and their colleagues at MetaFrame, for the use of their conference management software.

Book Proof Theory in Computer Science

Download or read book Proof Theory in Computer Science written by Reinhard Kahle and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-30 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proof theory has long been established as a basic discipline of mathematical logic. It has recently become increasingly relevant to computer science. The - ductive apparatus provided by proof theory has proved useful for metatheoretical purposes as well as for practical applications. Thus it seemed to us most natural to bring researchers together to assess both the role proof theory already plays in computer science and the role it might play in the future. The form of a Dagstuhl seminar is most suitable for purposes like this, as Schloß Dagstuhl provides a very convenient and stimulating environment to - scuss new ideas and developments. To accompany the conference with a proc- dings volume appeared to us equally appropriate. Such a volume not only ?xes basic results of the subject and makes them available to a broader audience, but also signals to the scienti?c community that Proof Theory in Computer Science (PTCS) is a major research branch within the wider ?eld of logic in computer science.
