Book excerpt: Excerpt from Logging: The Principles and General Methods of Operation in the United States This volume has been prepared as a text-book for use in Forest Schools. The subject is broad in scope and an attempt has been made to cover only the more important features of operation; hence the innumerable variations in equipment and method which are peculiar to different forest regions are not included. Of the many minor industries related to logging, only two of the more important are treated, turpentine orchard ing and tanbark harvesting. One of the most difficult and costly features of a logging operation is the movement of the timber from the stump to the manufacturing plant and the chief facilities and methods for doing this are discussed at length, especially logging rail roads. The greatest emphasis is laid on features about which there is not much written material available, while engineering subjects such as road surveys and the measurement of earth work and rock-work are omitted because they are treated in numerous other text-books. Book Deforesting the Earth

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Williams
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 0226899268
  • Pages : 716 pages

Download or read book Deforesting the Earth written by Michael Williams and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since humans first appeared on the earth, we've been cutting down trees for fuel and shelter. Indeed, the thinning, changing, and wholesale clearing of forests are among the most important ways humans have transformed the global environment. With the onset of industrialization and colonization the process has accelerated, as agriculture, metal smelting, trade, war, territorial expansion, and even cultural aversion to forests have all taken their toll. Michael Williams surveys ten thousand years of history to trace how, why, and when human-induced deforestation has shaped economies, societies, and landscapes around the world. Beginning with the return of the forests to Europe, North America, and the tropics after the Ice Ages, Williams traces the impact of human-set fires for gathering and hunting, land clearing for agriculture, and other activities from the Paleolithic through the classical world and the Middle Ages. He then continues the story from the 1500s to the early 1900s, focusing on forest clearing both within Europe and by European imperialists and industrialists abroad, in such places as the New World and India, China, Japan, and Latin America. Finally, he covers the present-day and alarming escalation of deforestation, with the ever-increasing human population placing a possibly unsupportable burden on the world's forests. Accessible and nonsensationalist, Deforesting the Earth provides the historical and geographical background we need for a deeper understanding of deforestation's tremendous impact on the environment and the people who inhabit it.

Book The Child in the Electric Chair

Download or read book The Child in the Electric Chair written by Eli Faber and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tragic story of the killing of 14-year-old George Junius Stinney Jr., the youngest person executed in the United States during the twentieth century At 7:30 a.m. on June 16, 1944, George Junius Stinney Jr. was escorted by four guards to the death chamber. Wearing socks but no shoes, the 14-year-old Black boy walked with his Bible tucked under his arm. The guards strapped his slight, five-foot-one-inch frame into the electric chair. His small size made it difficult to affix the electrode to his right leg and the face mask, which was clearly too large, fell to the floor when the executioner flipped the switch. That day, George Stinney became, and today remains, the youngest person executed in the United States during the twentieth century. How was it possible, even in Jim Crow South Carolina, for a child to be convicted, sentenced to death, and executed based on circumstantial evidence in a trial that lasted only a few hours? Through extensive archival research and interviews with Stinney's contemporaries—men and women alive today who still carry distinctive memories of the events that rocked the small town of Alcolu and the entire state—Eli Faber pieces together the chain of events that led to this tragic injustice. The first book to fully explore the events leading to Stinney's death, The Child in the Electric Chair offers a compelling narrative with a meticulously researched analysis of the world in which Stinney lived—the era of lynching, segregation, and racist assumptions about Black Americans. Faber explains how a systemically racist system, paired with the personal ambitions of powerful individuals, turned a blind eye to human decency and one of the basic tenets of the American legal system that individuals are innocent until proven guilty. As society continues to grapple with the legacies of racial injustice, the story of George Stinney remains one that can teach us lessons about our collective past and present. By ably placing the Stinney case into a larger context, Faber reveals how this case is not just a travesty of justice locked in the era of the Jim Crow South but rather one that continues to resonate in our own time. A foreword is provided by Carol Berkin, Presidential Professor of History Emerita at Baruch College at the City University of New York and author of several books including Civil War Wives: The Lives and Times of Angelina Grimke Weld, Varina Howell Davis, and Julia Dent Grant.
