Book excerpt: Unsigned, undated typescript transcription, possibly by Edward Ayer from around 1900, of the log book of the schooner "Frances Helen", kept by her captain, M.H. Leeds, during the voyage from Philadelphia to San Francisco between Oct. 24, 1849 and March 29, 1850. The schooner departs from Cape Henlopen, Delaware, on Oct. 24, 1849, with thirteen crewmembers and eight passengers aboard. The log records the speed and course of the ship, and the direction of the winds, as well as other comments by the captain concerning passing ships they encounter, and the condition of crew members. On Dec. 18, 1849, in the South Atlantic, a seaman, Jacob Bauman, falls overboard and is drowned, despite rescue attempts; another hand, Samuel Gandy, is lost on Feb. 10, 1850 near St. Ambrose Island. By Jan. 14, 1850, the ship passes Cape Virgin (Argentina), the Straits of Magellan, Cape Horn, Cape Gregory, and one of the Pitcairn Islands, Elizabeth Island. They anchor in Port Famine to take on fresh water and supplies, and then head to Valparaiso, Chile, where they anchor from Feb. 3-7, 1850. They sight San Francisco on March 27, and anchor on the 29th, after 157 days at sea from Philadelphia, and 51 from Valparaiso.
