Book Logarithmic and Other Mathematical Tables Classic Reprint

Download or read book Logarithmic and Other Mathematical Tables Classic Reprint written by William Joseph Hussey and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-26 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Logarithmic and Other Mathematical Tables Throughout the greater part of the book every tenth line is enclosed by parallel rules, and the other lines are grouped in threes. This gives the pages an open appearance, enabling one to find more readily the numbers sought, and securing in the trigonometric tables a symmetrical arrangement such that the order is the same in reading from the bottom of the page as from the top. The auxiliaries S and T, which are always used in connection with the logarithms of numbers, are conveniently placed at the bottom of pages 2 to 21, instead of in a separate table. Their arithmetical comple ments, CS and ct, are to be found on pages 62 to 64, adjacent to the logarithmic trigonometric functions with which they are used. The tables of addition and subtraction logarithms are based on those of Zech. The argument in each of these tables is obtained by subtract ing the smaller logarithm from the larger. The function is always added to the larger logarithm in addition, and always subtracted from it in subtraction. On account of these uniform ways of proceeding, these tables are more convenient than the Gaussian tables. Book Smithsonian Logarithmic Tables

Download or read book Smithsonian Logarithmic Tables written by George Wellington Spenceley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Smithsonian Logarithmic Tables: To Base E and Base 10 Triginally we planned a table of natural logarithms only to base e), several years later it was decided to include common logarithms to base This doubled our work and necessitated some revi l of computations already finished. We feel that the completed design ifies the extra work and added expense. Vhile the tables were in preparation Miami University assigned four lents to help in the work and paid them for their efforts - Paul Chifos, gene Epperson, Steve Pizanis, and Russell Treon. The loyal, pains ng, and efficient work of these young men was a continuing inspiration 15, and all out of proportion to the remuneration they received. In fact, Epperson's work was so extraordinarily helpful that we have placed name with ours on the title page. Toward the end of our task we sent photostatic copies of several pages the manuscript to Dr. A. J. Thompson, computer and well - known or of Logarithmetica Britannica, for his expert appraisal, not for ing to remind him that he himself had anticipated our idea by several rs. His friendly and commendatory letter, including many suggested Irovements, was a valuable aid and probably the deciding factor in the icult task of promoting the publication of the tables. Ve are deeply indebted to the Research Corporation of New York the generous grant of funds to the Smithsonian Institution that made sible the publication of this book and also to Dr. Alexander Wetmore, retary of the Smithsonian, through whose interest and efforts the publi on of the tables was undertaken by the Institution. Not only was Dr. Tmore chiefly responsible for negotiating the financing of the publica 1, but he and his editorial staff have been most helpful in seeing the Ime through the press. Book Logarithmic Tables of Numbers and Trigonometrical Functions Classic Reprint

Download or read book Logarithmic Tables of Numbers and Trigonometrical Functions Classic Reprint written by Georg Vega and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Logarithmic Tables of Numbers and Trigonometrical Functions To facilitate the interpolation, small tables of proportional parts have been added in the first and third parts. The use of smaller type has enabled us to give them completely even in the first pages for every difference. These tables give accurately the tenths of the whole difference, so that the addition of the tenths hun dredths and thousandths gives the proportional part correct to the last figure which is not the case with the usual arrangement. According to a very common arrangement the same small table of proportional parts has to be used for the whole extent of the table in its vicinity, without reference to the difference whether it be an unit more or less; but this has been rejected as inaccurate. In the third part want of space has prevented all the differences from being given; at the commencement, i. E. Beginning at'50, those only could be inserted which differed by 10 units, then those dif feting by 5, by 3 etc., while finally, from each difference is set down. The advantages which these tables afford in interpolation, will be best appreciated by those, who have felt their want in all other tables. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Smoley's Tables: Parallel Tables of Logarithms and Squares, Angles and Logarithmic Functions, Corresponding to Given Bevels, and Other Tables for Engineers, Architects, Etc The success achieved by the previous editions of this work encouraged the author to undertake its extension to 100 feet. The extended part has, however, been tabulated by steps of 1/16" instead of 1/32" as the latter for lengths of over 50 feet would have little value, if any. The computation and checking of the extended part has been carried out in the same careful manner as the old tables and it is therefore believed that it is as accurate as the old tables proved to be. The parallel system of tabulation, visa the placing of the squares and logs. of the same numbers opposite each other, has been retained, this arrangement offering a number of advantages, namely: (1) The square and the log. of a number are often needed at the same time. (2) In many calculations the square of a number is given and its log. required or vice versa, the number itself being of no use to the calculator; the parallel arrangement of the tables enables in such cases the reading of the log. directly from its square or vice versa. (3) The log. of the square can be obtained by multiplying its corresponding log. item by 2. In an article by Mr. F. D. Davis entitled: "Smoley's Tables; Some Convenient Methods by Their Use," published in the Engineering News of Dec. 25, 1902, Mr. Davis is discussing this special feature of these tables (visa their parallel arrangement) demonstrating the usefulness resulting from it by applying the tables to a number of examples relating mainly to mensuration. But in the opinion of the writer the parallel combination of the tables finds its most effective field of application in the solution of triangles for the purpose of figuring the data required for structural detail drawings. The most general problem we have here to deal with is this: With two given sides of a right-angle triangle, usually the main dimensions of the frame (as in a roof truss the half span and rise), to find: 1, the hypothenuse; 2, the bevel or slope; 3, the log. functions of the angles of the triangle, the latter for the purpose of figuring the diagonals of the frame, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
