Book excerpt: For most Colorado citizens, Fort Logan usually brings to mind the large national cemetery of the same name. Often unrealized is that nearby, there are fine, substantial brick buildings that mark the remains of a once-bustling military post. Fort Logan began in 1887 and became a part of the US Army's new network of urban-type forts with strategic rail links. Located in the beginning about eight miles southwest of Denver, it variously housed important infantry, cavalry, and engineer units and later served as a key recruit and discharge center. It also once attracted Denverites to elaborate parade ceremonies, stirring band concerts, and competitive athletic events. After World War II, it became property of the State of Colorado and today is the site of the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan.

Book excerpt: Salado Creek, Texas, 1918: Thirteen black soldiers stood at attention in front of gallows erected specifically for their hanging. They had been convicted of participating in one of America’s most infamous black uprisings, the Camp Logan Mutiny, otherwise known as the 1917 Houston Riots. The revolt and ensuing riots were carried out by men of the 3rd Battalion of the all-black 24th U.S. Infantry Regiment—the famed Buffalo Soldiers—after members of the Houston Police Department violently menaced them and citizens of the local black community. It all took place over one single bloody night. In the wake of the uprising, scores lay dead, including bystanders, police, and soldiers. This incident remains one of Texas’ most complicated and misrepresented historical events. It shook race relations in Houston and created conditions that sparked a nationwide surge of racial activism. In the aftermath of the carnage, what was considered the “trial of the century” ensued. Even for its time, its profundity and racial significance rivals that of the O.J. Simpson trial eight decades later. The courts-martial resulted in the hanging of over a dozen black soldiers, eliciting memories of slave rebellions. But was justice served? New evidence from declassified historical archives indicates that the courts-martial were rushed in an attempt to placate an angered white population as well as military brass. Mutiny of Rage sheds new light on a suppressed chapter in U.S. history. It also sets the legal record straight on what really happened, all while situating events in the larger context of race relations in America, from Nat Turner to George Floyd.

Book excerpt: Lest We Forget: Ben Harrison Logan, Jr., An American Soldier in World War II A poignant memoir about one of our greatest generation written by his son. Ben Logan, Jr. served as a captain in George Patton's Third Army during the latter stages of World War II. Before turning to his history in the Army, the book briefly traces Logan's childhood during the Great Depression. It then details his six years of active duty, including his involvement (beginning in 1939) in the Army's early preparations for war, volunteering for combat in 1942, joining the 89th Division (Infantry) and shipping out in January 1945, serving as a company commander in Third Army during the final offensive against Germany, and serving as the commanding officer of a military government unit in Bavaria immediately after the war. Like most combat soldiers, Captain Logan was closed-mouthed about his combat experiences -- with one exception. During April 1945, another company in Captain Logan's regiment discovered Ohrdruf, the first concentration camp liberated by the Western Allies. Shortly after it was liberated, Captain Logan led his company through Ohrdruf; this experience was seared in his memory. During the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps, other combat veterans persuaded him to speak publicly about Ohrdruf. He did so, including writing a newspaper article, writing open letters and sitting for an interview by the Shoah Foundation. The book contains a grim account of his experience at Ohrdruf. The title of the book -- Lest We Forget -- is borrowed from an October 27, 1945 article describing the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps that appeared in the gazette that Captain Logan's military government unit published for the local citizens. Captain Logan's brother, Winford B. Logan, was also a captain in the infantry in combat in France and Germany. The brothers were very close and the book recounts a number of humorous events involving the two of them, including a night spent in Eva Braun's bed (Eva was not there). The book is primarily intended as a personal memoir for subsequent generations of the Logan family, who either remember Captains Ben and Winford Logan fondly or have heard many stories about them. It is also an appropriate read for those who are fascinated by World War II and those who want to learn more about the Holocaust.
