Book Log Construction Manual

Download or read book Log Construction Manual written by Robert Wood Chambers and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Log buildings are embedded deeply into North American history and culture. For more than one thousand years, builders have been weaving logs into homes, shelters, barns, and churches. Today, however, the buildings where we live and work are rarely handmade from natural materials. In this context, handcrafted, scribe-fitted natural log buildings are an attractive and uplifting alternative to conventional buildings and building materials. This book tells you what you need to know to build your own log home and also reveals the deep rhythms and patterns of log construction. Author Robert Chambers shows how to take naturally shaped, tapered, round logs and scribe-fit them one to another so that they look like they actually grew together in the woods. The Log Construction Manual is filled with information available nowhere else, including the Log Selection Rules, Chambers's brilliantly simple method for choosing which log to use next; instructions for building hip and valley log rafters and roof trusses from full-round logs; step-by-step directions for laying out the sill logs for virtually any floor plan, including hexagons, prows, and more; state-of-the-art compression-fit saddle notches and underscribing to keep fits tight over time; details on scribing and cutting long grooves and corner notches just like the pros; and more. Chambers also offers advice on organizing and financing a log home project and has loads of experience to share on cutting costs and avoiding common pitfalls. He presents practical ideas for saving money and controlling costs. Although handcrafted log homes are expensive to buy, they are within reach for many as owner-managed building projects. Writtenconcisely with great care in explaining important details, the Log Construction Manual brings clarity, insight, depth, and even humor to the log builder's craft. This is a comprehensive book for log home owner-builders, beginners as well as professionals.

Book Log Cabin Studies

Download or read book Log Cabin Studies written by Mary Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Log Cabin Studies: The Rocky Mountain Cabin, Log Cabin Technology and Typology, Log Cabin Bibliography Log cabins in the United States have generally been described as side-gabled dwellings with doors in the front and sometimes rear walls with a fireplace centered along a gabled wall. While this description is valid for cabins in much of the eastern United States, a cabin type appearing in Idaho is, in many ways, quite different. Orientation of the structure is changed so that the gable ends of the cabin face to the front and rear. A single door is usually off-centered in the front wall of the cabin with an iron stove replacing the fireplace along a gable wall. The most distinc tive feature of this cabin is the frontward extension of the gabled roof, 25 to 100 percent of the length of the cabin, which forms a covered porch or work area (figure l). The first aim of this project is to describe this cabin type-to define its architectural. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Building With Logs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Building With Logs Classic Reprint written by Clyde P. Fickes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building With Logs A building should have a good foundation, and a log structure is no exception to the rule. For the sake of economy in labor and material it is sufficient, in some instances, to place small buildings on piers of concrete or rough native stone, but usually it will be more satisfactory to use continuous walls of stone masonry or con crete to provide uninterrupted support for the logs and thus avoid their tendency to sag. These walls, however, should be provided with small openings for the circulation of air to prevent the wood from dry rotting. Furthermore, the continuous foundation wall has the additional advantage of preventing rodents from getting under the building. In no case should the logs be placed directly upon the ground since wood tends to decay when in contact with the earth. The two end walls of the exterior foundation should be higher than the side walls in order to offset the difference in level of the logs on adjacent walls, the end-wall logs being half their thickness hi her than those on the side walls. Tn building a log wall the chief problem is in closing the opening between each pair of logs. There are various ways of doing this, but only those regarded as most satisfactory will be described in this publication. The width of such openings is affected by several factors: (1) The manner of placing the logs upon each other; (2) the type of corner used where two walls meet; (8) the openings for doors and windows; and (4) the natural shrinkage of wood in the process of drying.
