Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberal defences of nationalism have become prevalent since the mid-1980’s. Curiously, they have largely neglected the fact that nationalism is primarily about land. Should liberals throw up their hands in despair when confronting conflicting claims stemming from incommensurable national narratives and holy texts? Should they dismiss conflicting demands that stem solely from particular cultures, religions and mythologies in favour of a supposedly neutral set of guidelines? Does history matter? Should ancient injustices interest us today? Should we care who reached the territory first and who were its prior inhabitants? Should principles of utility play a part in resolving territorial disputes? Was John Locke right to argue that the utilisation of land counts in favour of its acquisition? And should Western style settlement projects work in favour or against a nation’s territorial demands? When and how should principles of equality and equal distribution come into play? Territorial Rights examines the generic types of territorial claims customarily put forward by national groups as justification for their territorial demands, within the framework of what has come to be known as ‘liberal nationalism’. The final outcome is a multifarious theory on the ethics of territorial boundaries that supplies a workable set of guidelines for evaluating territorial disputes from a liberal-national perspective, and offers a common ground for discussion (including disagreement) and for the mediation of claims.

Book excerpt: A deliciously iconoclastic and often funny historical survey of Western philosophy. . . . This irreverent tour will goad armchair philosophers to independent thought. - Publishers WeeklyAnyone thinking of a major in philosophy would do well to read this . . . - Philadelphia City PaperHis acid humor and frank discussions are a welcome comic interlude for the serious student of philosophy. - Philosophy and Religion Expert Editor's Recommended Book, Amazon.com. . . delightful irreverence . . . brilliant ending. - New HumanityThroughout history, well-known theories of reality, knowledge, mind, and most particularly the professional philosophers who rely on them for their intellectual existence, have sought to isolate universal truths and structure the history of philosophy to distinguish schools and movements that seek a comprehensive understanding of our world. But in this well-intended pursuit of truth, have we lost sight of what philosophy is? Matthew Stewart believes we have. His rowdy guided tour of the search for truth romps through traditional histories of philosophy using parables, imaginary dialogues, and illustrations to demonstrate that knowing theories, recognizing revered schools, and distinguishing the views of the great philosophers isn't what philosophy should be about. Once removed from the clutches of historicism, the compulsion for universal answers, and the perception that reason is a peculiarly Western possession, the nature of philosophy can be seen as a genuine human disposition to love and respect knowledge coupled with a desire for critical thinking.Matthew Stewart (New York, NY) holds a doctorate in philosophy from Oxford University and is a founding partner of the Mitchell Madison Group, a management consulting firm.

Book Moral Motivation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Iakovos Vasiliou
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book Moral Motivation written by Iakovos Vasiliou and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-27 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moral Motivation presents a history of the concept of moral motivation. The book consists of ten chapters by eminent scholars in the history of philosophy, covering Plato, Aristotle, later Peripatetic philosophy, medieval philosophy, Spinoza, Locke, Hume, Kant, Fichte and Hegel, and the consequentialist tradition. In addition, four interdisciplinary "Reflections" discuss how the topic of moral motivation arises in epic poetry, Cicero, early opera, and Theodore Dreiser. Most contemporary philosophical discussions of moral motivation focus on whether and how moral beliefs by themselves motivate an agent (at least to some degree) to act. In much of the history of the concept, especially before Hume, the focus is rather on how to motivate people to act morally as well as on what sort of motivation a person must act from (or what end an agents acts for) in order to be a genuinely ethical person or even to have done a genuinely ethical action. The book shows the complexity of the historical treatment of moral motivation and, moreover, how intertwined moral motivation is with central aspects of ethical theory.

Book Actual Ethics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Actual Ethics offers a moral defense of the 'classical liberal' political tradition and applies it to several of today's vexing moral and political issues. James Otteson argues that a Kantian conception of personhood and an Aristotelian conception of judgment are compatible and even complementary. He shows why they are morally attractive, and perhaps most controversially, when combined, they imply a limited, classical liberal political state. Otteson then addresses several contemporary problems - wealth and poverty, public education, animal welfare, and affirmative action - and shows how each can be plausibly addressed within the Kantian, Aristotelian and classical liberal framework. Written in clear, engaging, and jargon-free prose, Actual Ethics will give students and general audiences an overview of a powerful and rich moral and political tradition that they might not otherwise consider.

Book excerpt: Patrick A. Peters (“Pap”) and his twin brother Prescott U. Peters (“Pup”) are lawyers with a distinctive eye for opportunity. Pap convinces Pup who is a good lawyer despite having gone to Yale Law School that they should leave their respective big-firm practices in New York City to start up a hopefully lucrative practice as plaintiffs' class action lawyers. The brothers meet a variety of clients, judges, and lawyers as they embark on a resourceful and unique approach to lawyer-client relationships all inspired by actual court cases. Written with humor and parlance that only comes from a depth of legal experience, Morrison captures the trials and tribulations of human behavior that strike a chord with every reader. “The first thing we do, let’s pay all the lawyers.” —William Shakespeare “Ask not what your lawyer can do for you but rather what you can do for your lawyer.” — John F. Kennedy “What’s wrong with cake?” —Marie Antoinette “To put it bluntly, our services are designed to bring fear, terror and the threat of bankruptcy to all who come in contact with them.” —Patrick A. Peters III, Partner “P.S. We noticed that your client’s most recent 10-K filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission appears to have substantially overstated the company’s third quarter earnings. In an era where virtually every corporate misstep leads to a class action lawsuit, this misstatement could prove troublesome.” A graduate of Otterbein University (Ohio) and New York University Law School, T. C. Morrison spent his 50-year legal career writing briefs and trying cases around the country for a series of New York City law firms.

Book Eliot s Objective Correlative

Download or read book Eliot s Objective Correlative written by Flemming Olsen and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: T.S. Eliot's dictum about the objective correlative has often been quoted, but rarely analyzed. This book traces the maxim to some of its sources and places it in a contemporary context. Eliot agreed with Locke about the necessity of sensory input, but for a poet to be able to create poetry, the input has to be processed by the poet's intellect. Respect for control of feelings and order of presentation were central to Eliot's conception of literary criticism. The result - the objective correlative - is not one word, but "a scene" or "a chain of events." Eliot's thinking was also inspired by late 19th-century French critics, like Gautier and Gourmont, whose terminology he not infrequently borrowed. But he chose the term "objective" out of respect for the prestige that still surrounded the Positivist paradigm. In its break-away from Positivist dogmas, criticism of art in the early 20th century was very much preoccupied with form. In poetry, that meant focus on the use and function of the word. That focus is perceptible everywhere in Eliot's criticism. Even though the idea of the objective correlative was not an original one, Eliot's treatment of it is interesting because he sees a seeming truism ("the right word in the right place") in a new light. He never developed the theory, but the thought is traceable in several of his critical essays. On account of its categorical and rudimentary form, the theory is not unproblematic: whose fault is it if the reader's response does not square with the poet's intention? And indeed, T.S. Eliot's own practice belies his theory - witness the multifarious legitimate interpretations of his poems.
