Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of position location technology — from fundamental theory to advanced practical applications Positioning systems and location technologies have become significant components of modern life, used in a multitude of areas such as law enforcement and security, road safety and navigation, personnel and object tracking, and many more. Position location systems have greatly reduced societal vulnerabilities and enhanced the quality of life for billions of people around the globe — yet limited resources are available to researchers and students in this important field. The Handbook of Position Location: Theory, Practice, and Advances fills this gap, providing a comprehensive overview of both fundamental and cutting-edge techniques and introducing practical methods of advanced localization and positioning. Now in its second edition, this handbook offers broad and in-depth coverage of essential topics including Time of Arrival (TOA) and Direction of Arrival (DOA) based positioning, Received Signal Strength (RSS) based positioning, network localization, and others. Topics such as GPS, autonomous vehicle applications, and visible light localization are examined, while major revisions to chapters such as body area network positioning and digital signal processing for GNSS receivers reflect current and emerging advances in the field. This new edition: Presents new and revised chapters on topics including localization error evaluation, Kalman filtering, positioning in inhomogeneous media, and Global Positioning (GPS) in harsh environments Offers MATLAB examples to demonstrate fundamental algorithms for positioning and provides online access to all MATLAB code Allows practicing engineers and graduate students to keep pace with contemporary research and new technologies Contains numerous application-based examples including the application of localization to drone navigation, capsule endoscopy localization, and satellite navigation and localization Reviews unique applications of position location systems, including GNSS and RFID-based localization systems The Handbook of Position Location: Theory, Practice, and Advances is valuable resource for practicing engineers and researchers seeking to keep pace with current developments in the field, graduate students in need of clear and accurate course material, and university instructors teaching the fundamentals of wireless localization.

Book Location Estimation from the Ground Up

Download or read book Location Estimation from the Ground Up written by Sivan Toledo and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The location of an object can often be determined from indirect measurements using a process called estimation. This book explains the mathematical formulation of location-estimation problems and the statistical properties of these mathematical models. It also presents algorithms that are used to resolve these models to obtain location estimates, including the simplest linear models, nonlinear models (location estimation using satellite navigation systems and estimation of the signal arrival time from those satellites), dynamical systems (estimation of an entire path taken by a vehicle), and models with integer ambiguities (GPS location estimation that is centimeter-level accurate). Location Estimation from the Ground Up clearly presents analytic and algorithmic topics not covered in other books, including simple algorithms for Kalman filtering and smoothing, the solution of separable nonlinear optimization problems, estimation with integer ambiguities, and the implicit-function approach to estimating covariance matrices when the estimator is a minimizer or maximizer. It takes a unified approach to estimation while highlighting the differences between classes of estimation problems. The only book on estimation written for math and computer science students and graduates, it includes problems at the end of each chapter, many with solutions, to help readers deepen their understanding of the material and guide them through small programming projects that apply theory and algorithms to the solution of real-world location-estimation problems. The book’s core audience consists of engineers, including software engineers and algorithm developers, and graduate students who work on location-estimation projects and who need help translating the theory into algorithms, code, and deep understanding of the problem in front of them. Instructors in mathematics, computer science, and engineering may also find the book of interest as a primary or supplementary text for courses in location estimation and navigation.

Book The Dynamics of Property Location

Download or read book The Dynamics of Property Location written by Russell Schiller and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2003-07-13 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is property located where it is and how has this process changed in recent years? A number of factors such as social change and technological development, have affected location and these are considered. Value, the way changing patterns are measured, is examined and there is a discussion of rent contours. The book considers location in the retail industry, looking at the theory, hierarchy, clustering and dispersal. The move to out of town sites, with its three waves of decentralisation, is described. Central place theory, dating from the 1930s, is discounted as being obsolete and misleading. Finally the book covers offices, industrial and residential property.

Book Location Based Services

Download or read book Location Based Services written by Jochen Schiller and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-05-21 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Location-based services (LBS) are a new concept integrating a user’s geographic location with the general notion of services, such as dialing an emergency number from a cell phone or using a navigation system in a car. Incorporating both mobile communication and spatial data, these applications represent a novel challenge both conceptually and technically. The purpose of this book is to describe, in an accessible fashion, the various concepts underlying mobile location-based services. These range from general application-related ideas to technical aspects. Each chapter starts with a high level of abstraction and drills down to the technical details. Contributors examine each application from all necessary perspectives, namely, requirements, services, data, and scalability. An illustrative example begins early in the book and runs throughout, serving as a reference. · This book defines the LBS field and identifies its capabilities, challenges, and technologies.· The contributors are recognized experts from academia and industry.· Coverage includes navigation systems, middleware, interoperability, standards, and mobile communications.· A sample application, the "find-friend" application, is used throughout the book to integrate the concepts discussed in each chapter.

Book excerpt: Nothing like a rocky start between enemy coworkers stuck together on location to prove that love isn't just a ploy for ratings—it's a force of nature. Alia Dunn has finally gotten her big break. After years of working her way up at TV's top outdoor travel channel, she gets the green light from network executives to bring her dream project to life: produce a series about Utah's national parks. It's a touching tribute to her late apong, who sparked Alia's passion for travel and the outdoors as a kid. Alia is thrilled—until she meets her newest crew member, Drew Irons. The same Drew she had the most amazing first date with two weeks ago—who then ghosted her. The same Drew who has the most deliciously thick forearms and who loves second-guessing her every move on set in front of the entire crew. It's not long before the tension between them turns hotter than the Utah desert in the dead of summer, and their steamy encounters lead to major feelings. But when the series host goes rogue one too many times, jeopardizing the entire shoot, Alia realizes that she'll need to organize one hell of a coup to save her show—and she'll need Drew's help to do it. It's the riskiest move she's ever made. If she pulls it off, she'll end up with a hit series and her dream guy . . . but if it all goes wrong, she could lose both.
