Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Opening the Iron Trail It is fifty years ago, this year 1919, that the first of the iron trails across the United States, between the East and the West, was finally completed. At noon of May 10, 1869, the last four rails in the new Pacific Railway were laid, and upon Promontory Point, Utah, about fifty miles westward from Ogden, the locomo tive of the Union Pacific and the locomotive of the Central Pacific touched noses. That was indeed a great event. The Union Pacific, coming from Omaha at the Missouri River, had built over one thousand miles of track in three years; the Central Pacific, coming from Sacramento at the Pacific Ocean, had built over six hundred miles in the same space. Altogether, in seven years there had been built one thousand, seven hun dred and seventy-five miles of main track, and the side-tracks, stations, water - tanks, and so forth. In one year the Union Pacific had laid four hundred and twenty-five miles of track; in the same year the Central Pacific had laid three hundred and sixty-three miles. In one day the Union Pacific had laid seven and three quarters miles; in one day the Central! Pacific had laid a full ten miles. These records have' never been beaten. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Barron McIntosh has devoted a lifetime of scholarship to the history of human activity on Nebraska’s Sand Hills, the spare, beautiful land that occupies much of western Nebraska. From carefully deciphering Native American occupancy through rigorous analysis of thousands of arrowheads, to patiently combing through decades of courthouse land title transaction records, McIntosh has mastered the sweep of centuries of human interaction with the land. We learn how the land shapes humankind, far more than pride would have us believe, and we see that perhaps our real success lies in learning how to live with the land, rather than attempting to master it. The Nebraska Sand Hills reflects McIntosh’s lifetime of learning, reading, questioning, analyzing—in short, everything it means to be a scholar; seldom are these efforts so well demonstrated. His affection for this unique landscape is present on every page.

Book excerpt: Two ten year old boys, Waino and Ivar, returned from hunting one cold winter's day and skied back to the livery stable where Ivar's father boarded horses and mules. As Waino pinged his air rifle at a fence he dreamed about the moose he could have shot. All at once there was a very sad sound. It went "Haawwnnk -- hawnk -- hawnk -- haawwnnkk!" The two boys dropped everything. "What do you think that is?" Ivar asked. "Maybe it was a moose," Waino replied softly. And it was a moose -- though it was a while before Ivar's father or Mr. Ryan, the policeman, or the Mayor or any of the townspeople believed it. But what do you do with a moose? What can you do with a moose? Honk was hungry. He ate about a ton of Ivar's father's expensive hay. Then he went to sleep. Something had to be done, but Honk was naturally such a sad moose, you couldn't help feeling sorry for him. With perfect humor and understanding -- of small boys and a problem moose -- the author and artist have created a favorite children's classic. Honk the Moose won distinction as a Newbery Honors Book in 1936, the Lewis Carol Shelf Award in 1970, and was listed in Cattermole's 100 Best Children's Books of the 20th Century.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Iron Trail: A Sketch The Governor had it in his leg. Ordinarily, when it took him in the shoulder, we could get along with him; when it settled in his side, we grinned and bore it, for we knew that it would pass over with the first bright, dry day. But when he had it in his leg, it generally staid there until the housekeeper gave notice, and life no longer offered any charms to the cook or the chamber maid, and we had to watch June to prevent her from flinging herself head first into her Saratoga trunk, and letting the lid down with a snap. When he had it in his leg he was, to put it mildly, transformed from a benevolent and serene patriarch, into a howling and inconsiderate tyrant.
