Book excerpt: Today that it has become customary to refer simultaneously to both the global and ethnic entities as a community, it has become necessary to reexamine the meaning of this belabored concept. That is exactly the burden of this book. It intends to find a meaning for a community that bridges the parallel trends of globalization and ethnic awareness to thereby enrich all parties. I believe I found a reliable metaphor for community in another concept: the “person.” The search for this new understanding of community entails considering it vis-à-vis society. Both terms are usually used interchangeably, but as will soon be clear to us and as shown by research studies, they are not exactly identical. Effort is made in this work to avoid the limitations of the traditional application of the term “community.” Its features are reappreciated with this in view, taking into account also the multiethnic interest of this study. I incorparate the concept of “community of communities” to depict both the diversity among component communities and the unity that binds and characterizes them as a political entity.

Undertaking a micro-analytical approach, the book examines the customs and practices associated with typically fragmented and polycentric Italian village settlements to analyze the territorial tensions between various segments of a village and its neighbors. The microspatial analysis reveals how these tensions are the expressions of conflictual relationships between lay, ecclesiastical and charitable bodies culminating in a "culture of fragmentation" that impacts local economic and political practices. The book also traces how the production of locality survived throughout the nineenth and twentieth century and is still observed today. The book explores the concept of town character, and associated notions of sense of place, genius loci and place identity, as conceptualised by local residents in several coastal town communities along Australia’s Great Ocean Road. Drawing inspiration from the work of Walter Benjamin, Sigmund Freud and Georg Simmel, Pile explores the dream-like and ghost-like experiences of the city. Such experiences are, he argues, best described as phantasmagorias. The phantasmagorias of city life, though commonplace, are far from self-evident and little understood. This book is a path-breaking exploration of urban phantasmagorias, grounded empirically in a series of unusual and exciting case studies. In this study, four substantial phantasmagorias are identified: dreams, magic, vampires and ghosts. The investigation of each phantasmagoria is developed using a wide variety of clear examples. Thus, voodoo in New York and New Orleans shows how ideas about magic are forged within cities. Meanwhile vampires reveal how specific fears about sex and death are expressed within, and circulate between, cities such as London and Singapore. Taken together, such examples build a unique picture of the diverse roles of the imaginary, fantastic and the emotional in modern city life. What is "real" about the city has radical consequences for how we think about improving city life, for all too often these are over-looked in utopian schemes for the city. Real Cities forcefully argues that an appreciation of urban phantasmagorias must be central to what is considered real about city life.
