Book excerpt: Excerpt from Local Loiterings: And Visits in the Vicinity of Boston The reader who may be inclined to keep my company whilst in this series of papers I shall go through the lengths and breadths of this populous city, must not expect to be entertained by startling tales or novel incidents. I have no 'Mysteries' of Boston to relate, no melodramatic doings to chronicle. I am a plain man, and shall have to do with plain matters, with common facts. If, therefore, the reader be willing, on these conditions, to 'lend me his ears, ' well; but if records of every-day subjects, and chronicles of common things, possess no interest for him, we had better at once pursue different paths, than run the risk of falling out on our journey. And it is really wonderful how many objects of interest lie in and about our daily paths, and how much amusement and instruction we might derive from them, if we would but slightly exercise our reflective faculties; we are too apt to fly in search of excitement to far-away scenes, forgetting that our sympathies may be more profitably enlisted by objects long familiar and near at hand. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Freeman’s rich and ambitious Behemoth depicts a world in retreat that still looms large in the national imagination.…More than an economic history, or a chronicle of architectural feats and labor movements." —Jennifer Szalai, New York Times In an accessible and timely work of scholarship, celebrated historian Joshua B. Freeman tells the story of the factory and examines how it has reflected both our dreams and our nightmares of industrialization and social change. He whisks readers from the early textile mills that powered the Industrial Revolution to the factory towns of New England to today’s behemoths making sneakers, toys, and cellphones in China and Vietnam. Behemoth offers a piercing perspective on how factories have shaped our societies and the challenges we face now.

Book Foreign Trends in American Gardens

Download or read book Foreign Trends in American Gardens written by Raffaella Fabiani Giannetto and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2017-02-08 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign Trends in American Gardens addresses the influence of foreign, designed landscapes on the development of their American counterparts. Including essays from an array of significant scholars in landscape studies, this collection examines topics ranging from the importation of Western and Eastern styles of design and theoretical literature to the adaptation of specific plant types. As the variety of topics and influences discussed demonstrates, the essence of American gardens defies simple definition. Examining the translation, imitation, adaptation, and naturalization of stylistic trends and horticultural specimens into American gardens, the book also dwells on the juxtaposition of the foreign and the native. The volume’s contributors consider the experiences both of immigrants, who contributed through their writing, planting, and design efforts to enhance the character of regional gardens, and of Americans, who traveled abroad and brought back with them a passion for naturalizing exotics for scientific as well as aesthetic reasons. The complexity of American gardens—their combination of the historic and the modern, and of foreign cultures and local values—is also their most distinctive characteristic.
