Download or read book Carbon Budget Accounting at the Forest Management Unit Level written by Martin Von Mirbach and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report has been prepared in response to an identified need to provide guidance to forest managers seeking to report on a carbon budget at the scale of the forest management unit. Key concepts, tasks, and methods related to carbon budgeting are first reviewed, and a few points gleaned from research carried out in Canadian model forests are summarized. Carbon budgeting is then explained with reference to three distinct tasks: obtaining a baseline measurement of the amount of carbon in a particular forest at a given time; measuring the change to that stock over time; and evaluating the likely impact of various management activities on future changes to the carbon budget. Information needed in order to apply these steps is given, with a focus on how to use existing inventories to record carbon stocks & fluxes. The report concludes with a listing of some activities that could help to store carbon in forests.

Download or read book Traditional Forest Related Knowledge written by John A. Parrotta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring a topic of vital and ongoing importance, Traditional Forest Knowledge examines the history, current status and trends in the development and application of traditional forest knowledge by local and indigenous communities worldwide. It considers the interplay between traditional beliefs and practices and formal forest science and interrogates the often uneasy relationship between these different knowledge systems. The contents also highlight efforts to conserve and promote traditional forest management practices that balance the environmental, economic and social objectives of forest management. It places these efforts in the context of recent trends towards the devolution of forest management authority in many parts of the world. The book includes regional chapters covering North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and the Australia-Pacific region. As well as relating the general factors mentioned above to these specific areas, these chapters cover issues of special regional significance, such as the importance of traditional knowledge and practices for food security, economic development and cultural identity. Other chapters examine topics ranging from key policy issues to the significant programs of regional and international organisations, and from research ethics and best practices for scientific study of traditional knowledge to the adaptation of traditional forest knowledge to climate change and globalisation.
Download or read book The State of Canada s Forests 1997 1998 the People s Forests written by Canadian Forest Service and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides factual and analytical information about Canada's forests, and addresses topics and issues important to the development of the Canadian forest sector. In addition to providing an annual overview on the state of Canadian forestry, the report places particular emphasis on Canada's forests as a source of commercial timber, and on management and environmental issues related to timber production. A national forest account is introduced to show the changes in the forest resource as it is depleted by harvesting, fire and insects, and replenished through reforestation and intensive management activities. Data are included from the mid-1970s to the present on exports by province and their value, their contribution to the balance of trade, employment, and types of materials produced.
